Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Thursday 9th September

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

  • Roy says:

Anyone else having problems with the Virgin credit card app (on Android)? Refuses to do anything and tells me I need to update to the latest version – but AFAICT I am using the latest version!

    • Peter K says:

      Uninstall and reinstall?

      • Roy says:

Ah, I restarted my phone and now there’s an update available. I guess it must have been caching in the Play Store or something.

  • Shaw West says:

What will be the cheapest and fastest way to slough from LHR? Is there a enterprise one way rental at airport?

  • Anuj says:

I referred a friend from my gold card (6000 points for me) he applied for the BAPP and I’ve received the points but only 4000, do the bonus referral points get added on later?
The chat are claiming that applying for a different card to mine affects how many points I get but I’m pretty sure it makes no difference to me what card they apply for

    • Andrew says:

As usual, chat don’t know what they are talking about. Pick up the phone and speak to Brighton to resolve issues not chat!

      • Anuj says:

Yes but they weren’t always this bad ! The person I was chatting to was typing like:
this….. As if it was an informal chat between two people….. after every half sentence….
It’s like they’re just hiring anyone.

  • Mark says:

Just got this text from Creation:

With immediate effect we will be unable to process any transactions using your Curve Card where the transaction is allocated to your Creation issued credit card.

    **

    End of the road…?

  • Anna says:

Not sure if this is another bad sign – just noticed the counter on one of our IHG cards hasn’t restarted even though the credit card night was earned in July!

    • Aston100 says:

Dunno Anna, but I can no longer use my favourite phrase “Sandy Bendy Bondies, for Interconty Pointies” 🙁
      Sad times.

    • TGLoyalty says:

My counter extends off the end of the face of the earth and it only reset at the start of august.

      • Gareth says:

I noticed that mine recently just shows 10k complete, prior to this was also off the end of the scale!

    • Peter K says:

After earning the free night earlier this year the counter did not reset until the following month….but the spend in that intervening month did count to the new target.

  • Jill ( Kinkell) says:

I have cash tied up in American Airlines tickets. This stems from a ( me) cancelled USA to SAmerica, trip in 2020 and then used for an internal USA flight in 2021. ….cancelled by me. It seems to be that I have a FTV worth
    £ 240 which expires 5 Nov 2021 and about £500 tied up and valid until 31 March 2022. .
Any ideas how I can benefit without losing some or all of it? Not sure how I stand if I booked a trip to USA then had to cancel .if all else fails…..

    • ChrisC says:

From the AA board on flyer talk it seams to get actual cash back is to book a flight with the trip credit(s), hope it gets cancelled and then claim a refund.

    • AJA says:

Can you use it to buy an AA code share flight on BA to somewhere in Europe? Effectively the opposite equivalent of using Avios via BA to buy a US domestic flight except paying in cash instead of using Aadvantage Miles.

      • ChrisC says:

I just did a dummy booking on AA (LHR-AMS) and it suported my suspicion that you can’t buy a stand alone cash ticket on a BA flight via AA. com just as you can’t buy a US domestic standalone on BA

    • davef says:

Utd and Delta have extended their vouchers out to the end of 2022. I’m assuming AA have or will soon. My AA credit is with Amex Travel so I can’t confirm it.

      • Lady London says:

Pretty sure I saw somewhere the DoT has also told airlines to give cash for expired vouchers. Hence their validity being extended by airlines.

    • Anna says:

From yesterday’s comments, AA are not going to be offering much goodwill around.

  • Sussex bantam says:

Evening everyone – anything much happen today ??

  • Realakagi says:

For those who use the IHG card with curve – did you get a text message from Creation saying that they will no longer process transactions from curve? I received that text today.
