Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

What are the most valuable credit card sign-up bonuses?

It’s time for our annual rank of the best UK travel credit card sign-up bonuses in terms of cold hard cash.

This article was updated on 1st December 2021, and all of the information is correct as of that date. Ignore the original publication date shown.

How do I value my miles and points?

The biggest question mark is over the value of the sign-up bonus.

  • For airline miles, I assume they are worth 1p each.  Of course, for airlines where short-haul redemptions are bad value, a small amount of miles can be effectively worthless. In some programmes, you would need to already have a decent balance to get full value from the bonus miles.
  • I have valued American Express Membership Rewards points at 1p since they transfer 1:1 into airline miles and I am valuing those at 1p
UK Rewards credit and charge cards

All of these cards add a 3% foreign exchange fee so you might want to get a separate free credit card to use abroad.

Unfortunately there are no travel rewards cards without a foreign exchange fee.  One option is to get a free card from Currensea. Currensea is a simple but clever idea. You pay abroad with your Currensea Mastercard debit card. Currensea translates the cost to Sterling with just a 0.5% fee (83% less than usual) and withdraws the money from your bank account. You can find out more by clicking here. Currensea is free so there is no risk in giving it a try.

It is important to remember that annual fees on American Express cards are refundable pro-rata if you cancel.  Cancel a card after three months, for example, and 75% of the fee will be refunded.  You will keep any sign-up bonus you have earned.

Membership Rewards points are hugely flexible.  You can transfer them into Avios, Virgin Flying Club or other airlines (at 1:1) or into various hotels schemes, into Club Eurostar or use them for shopping vouchers.

This is the ONLY personal American Express card where you still qualify for the bonus if you already hold a British Airways American Express card.

To qualify for the bonus, you must NOT, currently or in the previous 24 months, have held any other personal American Express card which earns Membership Rewards points.  This includes The Platinum Card and Preferred Rewards Gold.

You are OK if you had a supplementary card on someone else’s American Express account.

You are OK if, currently or in the previous 24 months, you have held any other American Express card, including the British Airways, Marriott and Nectar cards.

When you spend £10,000 on the British Airways American Express Premium Plus card, you receive a companion voucher entitling you to book two Avios redemption flights for the miles of one.  This voucher is valid for two years.  (Full taxes and charges need to be paid on both tickets.)

This voucher is the most valuable perk available in the UK airline and hotel credit card sector in my view. It could save you 150,000 or more Avios when used for a long-haul redemption in a premium cabin.

The voucher with the Premium Plus card is far more powerful than the voucher given with the free British Airways American Express card.  You only need to spend £10,000, instead of £20,000, in a card year to receive it.  More importantly, the Premium Plus voucher is valid for two years and is valid in ALL cabins.  The voucher on the free British Airways American Express card is only valid for one year and can only be used for Economy flights.

You receive your voucher within a few days of reaching the spending target.  You need to fly the outbound leg of your 2-4-1 flight before the expiry date of the voucher.

SILVER:  £200 of value – American Express Preferred Rewards Gold

If you spend over £15,000 in a card year, you will receive an additional 10,000 Membership Rewards points when you renew.

Starting in May 2021, you receive £120 of Deliveroo credit each year.  Amex will repay you £5 for the first two Deliveroo orders charged to your Gold card each month.

Learn more about the card benefits +

All Virgin Atlantic credit card holders receive free access to Virgin Money lounges across the UK.

When you spend £10,000 per year on the Virgin Atlantic Reward+ Mastercard, you can choose a benefit.  This is what you can pick from:

A 2-4-1 voucher, valid for two years, for a Virgin Atlantic cash flight or Virgin Flying Club redemption, in Upper Class, Premium or Economy

A return upgrade – on either a cash or points ticket – from Premium to Upper Class, or from Economy Delight/Classic to Premium.  You can either upgrade 1 x return flight if travelling alone or 2 x one-way legs of two return flights if travelling with someone else.

A Virgin Clubhouse lounge pass (requires a same-day Virgin Atlantic, Delta, KLM or Air France flight)

Here’s the small print:

If you are a Red (no status) member, you need to pay 50% of the points for your 2nd ticket if you redeem your 2-4-1 voucher in Upper Class.  This means that, for Upper Class redemptions for Red members, it is effectively a ‘2 for 1.5’ voucher. For Economy or Premium redemptions, it is a genuine ‘2 for 1’.

If you are a Gold member, you would receive two Clubhouse lounge passes instead on one if you chose that option

Taxes and charges need to be paid on the ‘free’ ticket as part of your 2-4-1 booking

Vouchers are valid for two years and you must fly the outbound leg of your trip before the expiry date

Summary

If there is anything to learn from this bit of fun, it is this:

If you and your partner took out the best three credit cards each, you could get almost £2,000 of value from the sign-up bonuses between you based on my valuation model. This is certainly nothing to be sniffed at.

Do not underestimate the value of the hotel cards. Whilst a small number of airline miles has little value, a small number of hotel points can get you one night somewhere, and one night is often all you need.

    There is.

I tried to downgrade my WE care as soon as they took the fee last year but HSBC would not refund the fee, fortunately my wife’s WE card fee had not yet been taken so hers was downgraded to the fee free card but has nit been used whereas mine has been used enough to justify the fee.
I’ll be downgrading mine just before the annual fee is due and upgrading my wife’s card, which I may as well do bi-annually to secure the bonus.
From memory all she had to do was fill out a form which HSBC posted out, they recommended that rather than go into the branch and complete the form as they said staff weren’t as uptodate as the card centre admin.

    • Rob says:

      Noted 🙂

  • TeesTraveller says:

You don’t need Currensea, just get a Starling bank account for your holiday spend and pay 0% fees on cash withdrawals overseas.

    • John W says:

Good suggestion Tees Traveller , I may do that as currently need something (had Tandem before which closed)

    • Rob says:

…. but then you need to set up a separate bank account and ensure it is properly funded to save …. what …. an extra £10 on £2,000 of spending. Most people have better things to do.

      • Sandgrounder says:

It’s not very hard to set up, 10 mins max while watching the TV at the same time, ‘properly funded’ means whacking your travel spends in before you go and transferring the excess back out when you get home. For me getting the best forex is just as much of a hobby as collecting miles, but, as you say, not for everyone. Staring are great though, their IT is fantastic. Pre-auth funds at a foreign fuel pump and the correct amount has updated and debited by the time you get back into your seat.

        • Rob says:

Also worth noting that Currensea works off the spot rate and NOT the Visa / Mastercard wholesale rate, so if Starling uses that then the cost differential is even lower than 0.5%.

        • TeesTraveller says:

I agree 100% with you. It is an excellent product, even if I dont use this as my main bank account.

      • TeesTraveller says:

Well you are suggesting setting up an account with Currensea so its hardly much more work. With Starling, it’s quite simple, you just transfer your holiday cash into it before you leave (or even when you are on holiday). App and customer service at Starling are fab.

But maybe Starling don’t pay referral fees to their affiliates?

Starling pays a lot, as do Monese. 3x more than Currensea.

Currensea drains your current account, so once you’ve done the initial link, that’s it, for ever. Nothing else to set up.

On a Virgin MasterCard does a supplementary holder have to wait 6 months after cancelling before applying to be a principal holder in order to qualify for the sign up bonus?

    • Rob says:

I should be shocked if true. Legally they were never a cardholder in the first place.

I got a Sainsbury’s card in the last month. Since Sainsbury’s is not very convenient I went and bought £350 of 3rd party gift cards to make up the £400. Although I had a limit of £2,000 and had only spent about £300 it was declined. I did manage to get it reinstated and spent some more yesterday.
I also got one for my wife which was declined yesterday for £150! No danger of her ringing them up.
It seems they only like small amounts.

I use them for their 0% purchase card for 2Y…. wonder if you can churn that…

  • Lawrence says:

Thanks Rob. The reason I’m asking is because she’s previously been refused a card in her own right as she ‘already has a Virgin MasterCard’ which is a supplementary holder on my account. I’ll have to cancel her from my account before applying again but just wanted your opinion on the ‘6 month wait’.

from reports here Virgin has rejected a number of people with excellent credit records and good salaries and who were not overextended on credit elsewhere. From what I understand some cards prefer to accept applicants who are more likely to pay interest and charges.

Does anyone know with the Platinum card, whether the elite status (say Hilton Gold for example) remains valid from the time you apply for the Gold status on the card benefits page, or from when the Platinum card is cancelled if later, or when the Platinum card started?
I am ready to cancel my card and get the pro rata refund and want to keep the Hilton Gold status I applied for 3 months ago, however I want to know how long the Gold status will last.

    • Genghis says:

Put it this way, I still have the status from my last plat which I cancelled about 3 years ago.

      • TGLoyalty says:

Mine randomly dropped to silver 2 years after I linked and I was still holding the platinum card plus spending more than enough to get gold via the HH barclaycard. Odd!

  • Chris H says:

For clarity, my question above means does it last 12 months from the day I cancel the Platinum card, irrespective of when I applied for the status upgrade, or 12 months from the day I applied for the upgrade (in other words, another 9 months from today)?

    • Matt says:

Whatever the official answer might be, Genghis is telling you what actually happens. I have never lost Hilton gold from when I first got platinum. I haven’t even bothered with the hotel registrations the last couple of times I’ve taken out the platinum card.

    • TGLoyalty says:

The official answer if all of the current year, the whole of the next year plus the first two months of the one after.
