The HfP chat thread – Thursday 9th September

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

I have a reservation for tomorrow night for 3 nights which my daughter will be using at a Kimpton booked on points. Do I need to inform the hotel I won’t be there? Will it cause an issue?

    • SteveJ says:

Yes, tell the hotel. IHG are generally fine wit this, if you inform them

    • John says:

In the UK should be fine, but in a country where hotels must ask for ID, not fine unless you have got confirmation from the hotel that it is ok

  • Ben says:

    Hello, some advice please:

I am due to go to Dublin next week and have just returned from a trip to Greece (pre departure and Day 2 test completed and negative). My flight back to England will be 9 days after I returned from Greece

If travelling from Ireland to England you do not need to complete a PLF or take any tests unless you have been out of the country within the last 10 days. What is not clear is what you have to do if you have been out of the country in the last 10 days? Does anybody know?

    Thanks

    • Pete M says:

      Get on with your trip?

    • Richie says:

      Complete the PLF?

    • Blenz101 says:

Haven’t you answered you Owen question? Follow the rules for being outside of the CTA in the past 10 days.

      • Ben says:

Not really, no because those rules are not clear. I suppose my question should have been, do I need to do a pre departure and day two test even though you have already done these when I did them when I returned to England the first time around?

        Many thanks

        • John says:

No pre-flight test but need PLF and day 2, unlikely to be checked unless someone attempting to evade UK hotel quarantine is on the flight too

  • Will says:

Anyone else like the minor improvement to Amex app whereby you add offers with one click. a little change is better than no change, but still they could have made it even easier

    • Rhys says:

Yep noticed that today! Although the little pop up thing isn’t so nice…

    • SteveJ says:

iOS I guess? No change on the mightier Android.

    • CarpalTravel says:

Despite all the great suggestions provided by members here, that is what gets delivered…!

Don’t even recall it being asked for. Ability to sort and remove please, similar to how much I wish I could edit my typo ridden posts on here!

      • Youllnever says:

To be fair, the US Amex app had this feature, so they might simply have been trying to achieve feature-parity with that version.

    • Pangolin says:

Like a broken clock, I’ll keep repeating it: allow the option to Hide/Remove offers from retailers you have zero interest in, so that they never appear again. You could call it the ‘Sweaty Betty’ option.

    • James says:

      No difference on Android

  • Will says:

BAPP voucher booking to Barbados at Xmas, returning in CW… looks like I will be cancelling, and reason to do it sooner or any reason to hold on until later? Expectation is a voucher (Is it a telephone only voucher?) valid until mid 2023, or a refund less £35 per person (£70) or is it per sector/person (£140). Any insight on whether a BAPP refunded voucher is exactly the same as the original voucher, or might it match the post-Sept 1st voucher?

    • Genghis says:

Will you BAPP 241 otherwise expire if not in a FTV? If not, and you don’t need the points, I’d wait to see if BA cancel.

  • Mouse says:

What’s the record number of comments on an HFP article?

    • Rui N. says:

Over 1000 when Amex dropped Curve I believe. Yep, people like Curve around here.

      • Anna says:

I think it’s more that people like Amex!

      • ChrisC says:

        and 990 of these were

“have you heard AMEX have dumped curve ?!?!?!?!?”

      • davefl says:

I hate curve. Tried to upgrade from basic to metal earlier in the year to add fronted. Ended up getting getting blocked for fraud on creation twice (new card both times), Metal upgrade didnt work, fronted didnt work, customer services complete nightmare. Fell foul of their delay in upgrading their 3DS as well.
Ended up getting a full refund of the cost for metal and they didnt even do that rigtht, split it into two repayments 3 days apart.
From what I read on the forums I’m not alone. Glad to be rid of them both.

    • Peter K says:

Over 1000 (when the amex sign-up rules changed IIRC).

    • Red Flyer says:

Think it was over 1000 when Amex dropped Curve IIRC.

    • Peter K says:

Why, is there big news today? I had a text from creation today, not sure anyone else has mentioned it yet….

    • CarpalTravel says:

Think it might just have been something Curve related.

Can’t quite put my finger on it.

      • ChrisC says:

shhhh you’re only allowed to call it bendy because the card people can’t understand code!

I did it once but I think I got away with it.

  • John says:

    Annouska – Amex Offer
Both my wife and I used the £200 off £500 spend at Annouska. Loaded offer to the card, visited the South Moltem Street Branch (location was inlcuded in the offer).
The Manager of the store even mentioned the Amex offer before we paid.
Amex tell us that because the payment was made through a ‘payment aggregator’ that the don’t qualify.
We both used the card in-store using the chip and pin terminal – very frustrating and have asked Amex to investigate.
Will definately be cancelling our cards if we are not reimbursed

  • Peter K says:

I’m still awaiting 3 statement credits from Morrison’s amex spend on 1st September. I know some have had credits for purchases made since this date but wondered if anyone had a statement credit from a purchase that specific day yet?

    • Dean says:

I haven’t had any credit for a purchase on 1st September but do have it for a purchase on 3rd September.

Don’t want to call and complain since if they look at transactions they may well question how anyone can spend that much on shopping.

      • Peter K says:

Similar. However, as far as I could see, giftcards were not excluded in the t&c’s.

These Offer Terms (including the offer description above) set out the key terms of our Morrisons offer. We will use your personal information such as name, email….

        • CarpalTravel says:

Trust me, they are not excluded…

It takes ages to post as a credit, instead check the “savings” tab in the offers area, you will see them there after a few days (so by now).

    • Char Char says:

Well for me had to use a few different cards and half of them didn’t track but maybe there is some secret limit

    • James says:

I got just oveer £9 from 1st September spend arrived a couple of days after, very quick

  • Metopes says:

Anyone used Amex Platinum travel insurance to claim the cost of a hotel if the country gets added to the red list a couple days before travel? Flying out next Friday which is one / two days after the next travel review by which time we are outside the cancellation window of the resort, with it costing around £6k I’m a bit nervous. Sounds like its covered reading the amex article on covid insurance but wondered if anyone had a successful payout?
