We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

QQ – Booking short break to Prague for 2 nights as a BA Holiday – just to cover all possibilities. Have been told that as the cost of the holiday is under £400 (£360 to be precise) and I have to pay full amount upfront that it is not covered by the BWC ? I cannot see the £400 spend rule in the T@Cs

    • ChrisC says:

Is the booking for within the next 3 weeks?

If so then it’s pay in full

    • AJA says:

When are you travelling? If you are booking less than 3 weeks out you will have to pay the full amount. I can’t see a restriction of BWC due to it being under £400. This if from the website:
      2. Eligibility to either “change” or “cancel your booking (in exchange for a voucher)”, using our book with confidence commitment, is available for all bookings made after 3 March 2020 for any travel dates from 1 January 2021 to 31 August 2022.

      • GaryE says:

No booking is for mid November – asking for full amount as total is £360

        • AJA says:

Are you doing this booking online or over the telephone? I think paying a deposit is only applicable to online bookings.

Low online deposits can only be paid for bookings created as flight + hotel or flight + car packages or any two products booked via Customise Your Trip, this can exclude a flight. All flight only, hotel, car and experience only bookings, and any hotel, car or experiences added to a flight only booking are excluded from this offer.

          • GaryE says:

Doing it online as a package (flight + hotel) and it states upto £999 – deposit should be £120. BA chat not able to help as they are only dealing with ‘flight enquiries’

    • Anna says:

Have you got mixed cabins or anything else like that? Sometimes BA’s IT doesn’t like certain types of booking. Also make sure you are using the “customise my trip|” facility as that’s more likely to give you the option to pay a deposit as well.

      • GaryE says:

Have sussed it out you need to stay for a minimum of 3 nights in order to get the deposit to work!!

  • Craig says:

Patiently waiting for my SMS from Creation 4 weeks before I have a hotel bill to pay in Tenerife.

  • VerdantBacon says:

I’ve had an email come through for an upcoming flight on BA (BA11) saying that it has been cancelled and it lists the new flights I’ve been booked onto

The flight number has remained the same, BA11.

The outbound has remained the same 25/09/21 arriving 26/09/21.

The inbound has changed from 05/10/21 arriving 06/10/21 to 06/10/21 arriving 07/10/21.

Am I entitled to moving these flights to any other date within their rebook limitations? Or do I have to take/cancel these new flights that I’ve been given?

    Thanks!

    • ChrisC says:

As there has been a cancellation you can rebook but you may need to call – but see what MMB will let you do first.

Being rebooked onto al alternative flight does not force you to accept it. It just means that if you want to travel on the new date that you have a seat!

      • davefl says:

Virgin cancelled my MAN-JFK and rebooked me on LHR-JFK 12 days before travel.

Submitted 261 claim and cancelled via the website. Boy do they make that cancellation form hard to find.

        • Lady London says:

If you cancel or take refund you lose your right to sue as you are deemed to have settled.

    • AJA says:

Also if you accept the new dates BA is on the hook for duty of care for the cost of the extra night hotel and food and non-alcoholic drinks, plus any taxi fares moving you to a new hotel.

  • Ali says:

Anyone heard the news about Creation and Curve? 😘

    • Aston100 says:

No please tell us, none of us have heard anything on here all day. Thanks

    • David Skinner says:

Obviously not just me then, I got a text: With immediate effect we will be unable to process any transactions using your Curve Card where the transaction is allocated to your Creation issued credit card

    • mr_jetlag says:

Yes but what does this mean for Rob’s Virgin points?

  • DAJ says:

Had flights from MME to LHR booked for October and return. Received an email changing times outbound and return by approx 4 hours which makes flights useless for me (work related). Flight numbers have also changed.

Interestingly, in the email it states the following:

‘You will only be entitled to a refund if this change moves your flight to a different day, you can no longer complete a day-return trip, or if your flight departure or arrival time changes by +/- 5 hours.’

Am I correct in saying that I am indeed entitled to a refund as this would be classed as a cancellation? I would like to know where I stand before I contact them.

    Many thanks.

    • ChrisC says:

flight number change = a cancellation.

      • davefl says:

Out of interest, what’s the deal when the flight number doesn’t change?
Virgin changed my JHB-LHR flight last year from Mon 7pm to Tues 7pm, which had a knock on on my hotel – extra day, onward travel from LHR, extra day leave, meals etc. What was the liability since they kept the same flight number and it was also more than 14 days before travel?

Ultimately it all got cancelled due to border closure but would be nice to know in case they ever do it again.

        • Genghis says:

Didn’t realise Virgin flew to Malaysia 🙂

Anyway, you’d be entitled to duty of care – Virgin paying the hotel, meals, a telephone call etc.

If want a refund, however, check the Conditions of Carriage. For BA, it’s in 9a: https://www.britishairways.com/en-gb/information/legal/british-airways/general-conditions-of-carriage

        • Lady London says:

Still a cancellation of your flight on the day you booked it, so a cancellation. Same numbered flight on a different day is a different flight. You had full rights to choose refund, insist on travelling as near as reasonably practicable to original date and time even on another airline if necessary, or to choose later dates of travel convenient to yourself.

    • DAJ says:

Well Loganair point blank refusing to refund saying that even though change of flight numbers as well as 4 hour difference in timings, as it is under their 5 hour or more rule they will not refund. They can put me on another Loganair service to LHR (of which there is none other than the flight I’ve been moved to). Any suggestions?!!

      • DAJ says:

Also in the conditions of carriage:

A change in the flight number; or addition or deletion of a stopping place to your route does not in itself constitute a significant change unless accompanied by a significant time change

        Looks like I’m snookered!!

        • Genghis says:

Issue letter before action. The change of time is significant to you.

        • Lady London says:

Flight number has changed. EU261 / UK261 says this is a cancellation giving passenger right to choose a refund. Additionally (explain work reasons…). Noting these rights are statutory and therefore supersede any contractual terms and conditions of airline.

          Do as Genghis says.

However isn’t Loganair a nice airline? Could you help them out by choosing a later date? Sometimes it’s not just about your rights but helping out a struggling smaller company.

          • DAJ says:

Appreciate your advice. To be fair to me, I am actually helping out a nice airline and a recovering airport by way of booking 7 seats on this particular flight for me and my colleagues. First of potentially many.

I cannot choose another date as this is not practicable for the purpose of our visit to London.

I will drop them an email quoting 261 and see where we go.

Thanks to those who have responded, it’s appreciated.

  • Stephan says:

A question on Amex Fine Hotel reservation site. If I have a corporate discount that I’ve been told to use can I somehow add that in when booking via the fine hotel site? Or can I request it when calling them?

  • Sprout says:

My monthly Curve metal fee is due to be charged tomorrow. Just switched it to a Creation card – let’s see how they like that! ha 🙂

    • Ernie says:

      lol

It’s clearly a creation issue, probably running out of points or hacked off spending many £ a month buying them for no return.

Just rinsed £7k through another underlying card.

  • Mel T says:

Not sure what’s going on today. All prepared to be on hold for hours to cancel a Virgin redemption flight, with tea and a good book to hand. I had only just recovered from the shock of new ‘on-hold’ music (checked I’d rung the correct number) when the call was answered within 10 minutes, causing me to choke on my tea. My flight cancellation was sorted within a few minutes with no obstacles, and the guy picked up they hadn’t refunded the correct amount of points and sorted it. Is it a full moon? 😂😂

    • Ali says:

3 hours on hold so far. Keep getting cut off after an hour.

      • Mel T says:

I should have said I was on the phone first thing this morning – meant to do 7am but ended up at 8.30am. Might be worth trying early tomorrow or later tonight ?
