The HfP chat thread – Thursday 9th September

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

  • Red Flyer says:

What was the biggest bond prize that anyone won using Bendy and Solihull to Sandy – anything bigger than £25?

    • Char Char says:

Never won more than £25 either, glad I invested in a fund instead

      • Bigmaggot says:

        Mostly £25s but had a £500 🙂

        • Rob says:

Return is 0.87% tax free, so if you’re a higher rate tax payer who pays tax on interest you’d be mad not to take the full £50k.

          • The Savage Squirrel says:

Why? I certainly don’t. When huge diversification is a mouse click away there is no good reason for me (and most other people) to keep 50k (x2 if married) of long-term savings in cash of any form.

          • Michael says:

Return is 1% tax free but point holds. Much better than a cash ISA.

          • Rob says:

0.87% is based purely on £25 prizes. I don’t factor in the rest.

    • Lev441 says:

I got a £500 prize! Everything else has been £25

    • John says:

Still £0 after 18 months but I’ve only bent small amounts.

    • Dave says:

Mine never stayed in as long as a month, lol

  • Harrier25 says:

I have been busy this afternoon rearranging the cards in my wallet and for the first time since 2016, my IHG Rewards Black card has a slot on the must use side, next to my Amex PRG card! This was the space where Curve sat
for the past 5 years but unfortunately had to be relegated today. A sad day. I will miss my weekly walks to the cashpoint machine.😪

    • Char Char says:

Well I’m sad for the Apple Pay functionality don’t care much for the MS spending

  • Martin says:

Help! Just tried to check in for a BA flight tomorrow and it says my travel documents are invalid. Have checked them all and they are fine. The COVID documents have been checked and they are fine. Passport has several years on it. Any ideas?

  • Char Char says:

If anyone can’t cancel their IC Rome booking, send the hotel an email and they will eventually be able to sort it for you. Hotel is cancelling all bookings before April

    • Harry T says:

Why don’t you ask them to rebook you for new dates? Cancelling is a poor strategic move

      • meta says:

Yep. Or if tied to dates, move to Indigo or somewhere better on their expense. I got moved from Kimpton De Witt to 5-star Pulitzer in Amsterdam last summer when they didn’t reopen on a rate that was fraction of the real cost (£80 vs £150 at Kimpton using points), with free breakfast and F&B discount and all my points returned as well. Most of these hotels are owned by developers who have other properties in the area and they’ll happily move you and offer something not available to general public.

  • stevenhp1987 says:

Tried to spend on my curve via creation in several shops. All declined. Worked when using creation directly.

Looks like they actually implemented the block!

    • John says:

But did you try curve with something else?

    • Anna says:

Grr. Might have to dust physical Che off. No apologies for using code!

    • FFoxSake says:

Once the intern had typed in the final mobile number and pressed send on the last SMS… 😉

    • Si says:

Seems like we bent it so much, it finally snapped

Nice of them to give us a 30min warning though so could tax to the max

  • Super Secret Stuff says:

Summary of today: Bendy’s got the bends

  • C says:

These comments have made my evening! In France enjoying my first aperol spritz after having a baby 4 months ago. Hubby doesn’t quite get it but we both received the SMS today en route! After a few bendy transactions yesterday we are now enjoying the fee-free currency transactions on the IHG card this month!

    • HBommie says:

I was Spritzed out last month, back on the Aperol train tonight! Missing Venice (yes I know I can go now).

  • BP says:

Curve on Twitter: they are talking with Creation.

    • Si says:

I will imagine Creation will only say 2 words and second one will be ‘off’

      • Harrier25 says:

I’m sure that the two IHG cards wouldve been the two most popular credit cards to have behind Curve, so not good news for their business model. Maybe they should’ve policed it better!

    • Anna says:

It’s Creation and Curve so expect several weeks between replies!

      • Harrier25 says:

Like Amex, I don’t think Creation will be interested in having any sort of dialogue with Curve. They’ve made a decision and that’s that. It will be interesting to see how Curve spin this in the coming days. Settle down and reach for the popcorn!

      • Rui N. says:

        🤣🤣🤣🤣

      • TGLoyalty says:

Reckon the smoke signals arent visible between London and Solihull …

    • SteveJ says:

They were also going to “talk to” and then “take to court” Amex. That statement is just Curve being Curve.

      • TGLoyalty says:

It’s completely different matter. Curve hasn’t been blocked by MasterCard.
