We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

    Another Covid question.

    PLF for entering the UK.

I assume this is the one on the Government website? Online only or can be printed and filled in?
If so, can you fill this in in advance, or does it have to be done X days before your return (assuming of course anyone even looks at it)?

    • Blenz101 says:

Online only and only 48 hours before travel.

      • Blenz101 says:

Oh – and it is linked to your passport number so no physical looking at it but the information will be used to harrass you by phone, email and potentially in person to make sure you are complying with any covid rules in force.

  • Chas says:

@Pete M – just been playing catch-up on yesterday’s chat thread. Thanks a lot for the post re Magic Goes Wrong discounted tickets – the whole family had been keen to see it for a while (we all loved the Play That Goes Wrong), and managed to get ourselves tickets to look forward to in mid Jan.

    • Pete M says:

Brilliant, maybe see you there! 🙂

      • Wollhouse says:

Hi Pete, I saw your post too, but I can’t find this. Silly question… but where do I find this in the mobile app? Under experiences all I have is some national theatre and fashion week?? Am I looking in the wrong place? I’ve checked my communications as previous poster mentioned and I am set up for these in case it was via email? The card is only a few weeks old. Does it take time to load experiences like offers? Are they targeted? Feel Im missing a section of benefits I should be looking at 🙂 thanks

  • John says:

It gets deleted after 7 days so it’s pointless to start too early

It will only let you progress beyond the details about your travel if you enter a scheduled arrival time less than 48 hours away. You can enter a false arrival time and pre-fill the rest, then correct the arrival time later.

  • Toppcat says:

A question on avios redemptions on AA: how do I add checked bags to what seems to be a HBO fare (in economy)?

Happy to pay for additional bags, but can’t seem to do so during the booking process, and I don’t want to get stung for what I assume is a higher ‘at airport’ charge. I have no OW status.

  • Paul says:

Had asked this yesterday and got rightfully so flogged for using the now redundant code words! Is Virgin still able to fund NS&I via Curve? I’ve upgraded to Metal and immediately on doing so have received a request from them for extensive info. or my account will be closed. I could send them all of what they are looking for and have been pretty moderate in my behaviours unlike my namesake Paul the Destroyer however if there is no point now anyway having upgraded for this very reason then I’d be happy to just take the refund (they’ve taken the £150 fee and almost immediately locked my account there after so I’d like to think they won’t pull a Creation on me and refund the fee). Any insight or direction would be much appreciated

    • Blenz101 says:

You can cancel but it will cost you £50 as per the terms of service. The KYC check they are doing from what sounds like you funding an NS&I account with a credit card isn’t going to change that. NS&I may also be in touch via a letter to tell you to pack it in as well.

      • Alan says:

Up to £10k per month of this type of spend is allowed under Metal’s T&Cs so why should they have a problem. if they have reducing the limit would be a better way to go than harassing customers following their rules.

Virgin presumably (does anyone know for sure) get their CC commission paid by Curve so why should they care

Unless you are blatantly recycling money why would NS&I care.

    • Mr(s) Entitled says:

Not wishing to highjack this question, but keeping the Curve questions in one place, can I ask if anyone have a recent data point for Metal to Capital on Tap for paying HMRC? It for a legitimate expense rather than any form of MS if that makes a difference.

I was planning on taking out metal today but I can’t keep track of the ever changing landscape.

      • Rui N. says:

Being a “legitimate expense” doesn’t make it any less MS. MS is getting points in a transaction where you wouldn’t usually receive them. Just because your expenses are “legitimate” (whatever that might be) doesn’t change the definition.

        • Blenz101 says:

But yes, you can do it as a fronted transaction. Unless you tax bill is huge the £150 fee is unlikely to be worth it. Do also note the various Curve limits, including daily.

        • Wollhouse says:

I guess the thing that muddies the waters is that Curve lists paying HMRC as one of the benefits of taking out metal. So then feels a little unreasonable to be tarred with the MS brush.

        • KBuffett says:

Do you have a reference for that definition please?

        • stevenhp1987 says:

But you can pay HMRC with a credit card. Using Curve just avoid the fee?

          Not MS.

        • Matt says:

MS stands for Manufactured Spend, ie spending money on credit card that is then recycled somehow, so not really paying out. Paying HMRC is definitely not MS!

      • Simon says:

You can pay 9k per day to HMRC via Metal and Capital on Tap until 1st Dec. From there its 10k per year.

        • Mr(s) Entitled says:

Simon – where is that information originating from, Curve or CoT?

When I asked CoT yesterday how many time I could clear my balance intra-month and they declined to give an answer. But they did say that they may at some point prevent me from doing so leaving me carrying the balance until the statement was generated.

If it’s true that 1 Dec brings about a change then I’m not sure if can be bothered with the hassle of pushing through 9k a day only for it to end in a couple of weeks, or sooner if Cost feel like it.

          • Mr(s) Entitled says:

            Cost = CoT. Damn autocorrect

          • Simon says:

You can clear your cot balance as many times as you like. 1st Dec is a curve Metal new rule. From then on it’s 10k per month to hmrc.

      • Luke says:

I’ve never found CoT to be particularly happy with any spend via Curve which wouldn’t work anyway just using the credit card directly. Frequent declines and once or twice have had it (CoT) blocked temporarily and been given a slapped wrist. Now only use CoT via Curve for “normal” spend.

    • Andrew H says:

A couple of months ago this worked for me for £500

A few days ago it didn’t – only a £500 deposit. Have asked why it didn’t work – no reply.

  • slonik says:

Are there any discounts floating about for priority security at Stansted?

    • Rob says:

If you sign up to their email list you tend to get a mailing once every week or so, often with codes for this and the lounge.

    • Rob says:

Speak of the devil … CP08112021 for 20% off before 31/12.

  • MrDr says:

Applied for plat when bonus was doubled. It got ‘called in’ but has now been approved.
Will I get double bonus or not do you think?

    Thanks all

    • Rob says:

Irrespective of whether you are due it, appeal anyway if it doesn’t turn up. It is a ludicrous rule for obvious reasons.

    • Andrew says:

I was told by CS and new accounts that it was actually the day you applied that matters (for both the referral bonus and for the signup bonus), and they had actually extended it internally until mid-Nov to allow them to close out applications.

  • Paul says:

Re. Creation, for those that have had their account closed prematurely and balances wiped, was the amounts they cleared?

    • stevenhp1987 says:

A measly £63.35 here – applied on the account as “Goodwill Compensation”.

Applying in as that suggests that they know I did nothing wrong to warrant a Section 12 (I didn’t!)…

    • Anuj says:

Is there any danger to having a credit card closed on you and not closing it myself before the date (in terms of those types of questions in insurance when they ever ask if you’ve ever had insurance cancelled.)

      • stevenhp1987 says:

Not really. The only danger is if you’ve committed some sort of crime and gotten a CIFAS marker out of it.

        • Anuj says:

Nope, all above board, I only added creation to curve because I wanted it on apple pay
