Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Wednesday 11th November

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/11/11/the-hfp-chat-thread-wednesday-11th-november/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Also new to this does airtime rewards work with Curve.
    1) if register curve do I earn on send through curve
    2) if I register underlying card do I earn if processed through curve
If both are yes then will I earn on curve and underlying card twice for same transaction ?

    • James. says:

Curve works with Airtime because you register your Curve card details with the app. So when you make a purchase it appears in Airtime. You cant double dip with underlying cards as Airtime will not see that details only Curve

  • r* says:

Does anyone have any suggestions of how to push some spend through brighton that doesnt involve buying gift cards/refundable flights?

Theres no fintech/paypoint options now are there?

I have a few months to hit my 2 for 1 voucher and currently I’m spending pretty much nothing on cards.

    • Anna says:

Does your council accept Amex for council tax (I can pay it via PayPal, usually pay it in full each April to help hit the 241 spend). House/car insurance due for renewal? (again pay it up front which works out cheaper in the long term). Christmas shopping, surely?!

      • Wollhouse says:

And if your council doesn’t, (mine doesn’t), my co op will let me pay council tax Instore via pay point using Amex. They restrict me to £200 a go, but let me put 3-4 transactions through at a time

    • mark2 says:

You can load Monese or Pockit through PayPoint at most Coops.

      • Tri87 says:

You get stung with fees on non-premium Monese plans which completely eat into any gains. There used to be premium trial codes going around but nothing has come out since, or at least I think so.

I had a pretty decent run with them during the good days (luckily never got shut down) but now they’re hiding away in a drawer very unlikely to resurface (unless anyone has good news!?)

      • Tri87 says:

Have just looked at Pockit…looked promising until I saw the fee structure (fees for cash in, cash out, membership). With a few assumptions, maxing the £5k monthly deposits and extracting to another account would cost ~£30/month. I think Monese’s plans are cheaper than that (£10/month?)

        • mark2 says:

OP wanted to spend to get 241 so £15-30 is irrelevant.
Monese is £14.95 per month, Pockit £4 per thousand to load and can be used via Curve.

    • The Urbanite says:

      Oooh, free Amex MS tips!

Good luck with Pockit! They may automatically block your account every other time you load through Paypoint. Immediately upon loading, you get an email saying your card is suspended and they request KYC documents. It takes them several days to respond to anything you send them. Good luck once again, you’ll need it!

      • Anna says:

Can I just point out that none of my tips were MS! Also it’s November and for most people seasonal shopping is one of the best/easiest ways of hitting a spend target.

      • mark2 says:

I have used them for several years and never had any trouble having loaded £15,000 per year.

      • the_real_a says:

Pockit is hilarious. Its the only company i thoroughly enjoyed taking to ombudsman and having them forced to pay me compensation.

  • Anna says:

I’ve just had an email from Barclaycard about changes to Ts and Cs – it doesn’t look to sinister on the surface but I hope it’s not the start of more “changes” … 😬

    • AJA says:

I just received the same email. Apart from increasing the minimum you have to pay (if you only ever pay the minimum) the one big difference I can see is “From 26 January 2021, we’ll be blocking any transactions made at a gambling establishment or on a gambling website, so if you try to use your card, it won’t go through. ”

I’ve never used the card in this way although I wonder if they include Ernie in this?

Also under giving you another card it now says “From time to time we may offer you an upgrade or change to a feature of your card” and “This may sometimes include new or increased fees as well as extra or changed benefits.” which opens the door to charging for the card as well as changing the rate of points we receive or a change of loyalty scheme.

      • memesweeper says:

The gambling one is standard, all non-debit cards have or will have this… it is designed to help limit problem gamblers.

        • Anna says:

Yes, not going to apply to savings accounts, that’s a different kind of gaming! Definitely doesn’t need any changes either 🤣

      • the_real_a says:

The gambling one is in response to the recent law change that debt cannot be used for betting/casino transactions. This is in response to a change in the law as opposed to commercial considerations.

  • Tical says:

Any one aware of a source for BA suspended routes – the article on Nov 5th mentions most but seems like there has been more movement (e.g. no BA flights to SOF until Dec 20th but no cancellation e-mail yet)

  • Tri87 says:

Think I’ve seen this asked before but haven’t been able to find the comments. I’ve got about 6000 Turkish Airlines miles that expire at the end of this year. Given I won’t be traveling before then:

    1) Is there anything non-travel I can use these miles for?
    2) Is there an easy way to keep them alive? Points transfer or something?
    3) Are they even worth keeping alive? I remember trying to redeem these and needing to face some ludicrous task of going to a physical site or something

  • Steve R says:

I have 1001 miles sitting with American. Can i do anything with them i.e. move Avios / IHG

    Thanks

    • Rob says:

No! Not sure if you’d still get £4 or so off a hotel booking via their portal but even that’s not worth it because you’d get a better deal booking elsewhere.

    • AJA says:

I don’t think there is much you can do with that small number. You cannot transfer to Avios and the hotel transfers require a much higher balance. You could try signing up for e-rewards and linking your AAdvantage account – that would prevent them from expiring. Also I read elsewhere that AA had suspended miles expiry until 31 Dec 2020 and also reinstated miles that expired on 1 July so it is possible that they may also suspend expiry again.

    • Chris K says:

I had some orphan AA miles about to expire and I donated to one of their charities. Better than going to waste.

      • MattK says:

Post a comment on Award Wallet blog and earn 5 AA miles. Very useful for preventing them expiring.

  • Sam says:

    Gold credit retention data point:

Was offered 3x points per £1 spend in July for 3 months (so extra 2MR)
Last week was offered 10k points for £2.5k spend which I declined as I already have spend targets on another card so have closed card (this was a really good offer I feel, oh well)

    • Harry T says:

Possibly played yourself there, unless you’re going to be spending substantially more than 2.5k in the next three months on your gold card.

    • bizboy says:

I also just got offered the same (gold card retention) 10k MR points for 2.5k spend over the next 3 months

    • Another Nick says:

I got 10kMR’s straight off with no spend target and had only put £500 through that card this year but I do hold a number of long term accounts with Amex

  • Hanif says:

    Question if I may,
In regards to Virgin Atlantic Credit card, I understand that you can only get points up to you credit limit per month, however does all spend could towards the 241/companion voucher or is that also limited by credit limit. So if my credit limit is £5000 can I spend, pay back, and spend another £5000 will I get the 241/companion voucher within a month.

    Many Thanks

    • Rahaney says:

      Limited.
You’d only get 5k a month regardless of paying it off early

      • TGLoyalty says:

OP already knows their points are limited they are asking if they can still earn the companion voucher after £10k spend if they recycle their credit limit.

        • Rahaney says:

My bad, if that is indeed the case I’d be interested to know that for my next one!
