We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

It’s almost 2 years for OH Platinum.
I wonder what special referral offers are around?

    • Harry T says:

I’ve seen an enhanced referral and sing up bonus where the person applying for Platinum can get a 70k sign up bonus! Best to email Rob and ask him if he or Rhys has the offer 😊

      • DK says:

@Happy T thanks. My question is not about was was before (I had that one myself) but what is available now

        • meta says:

The current offer for referral is 70k for £4k spend and referrer gets 24k. It’s not available to everyone though.

        • Andrew says:

The current enhanced referral bonus is 70k when you spend £4000 in first 3 months. This is targeted, so some of us have it and some don’t. Rob can put you in touch with one of us if he doesn’t have the offer on his card/maxed out and you don’t have any friends with the offer.

          • Jonathan says:

I had the enhanced referral but it has disappeared in last couple of days. Is that the case for others as well?

          • meta says:

@Jonathan I can still see it on mine.

          • TGLoyalty says:

Still have the Plat. Though player 2 had a gold one which disappeared around 4-5 days ago.

    • SJ says:

I have the 70k referral on my platinum. Not sure what the rules are here regarding sharing referrals on here? But you are welcome to use it

  • Tony says:

Hello folks. I have a free credit card night voucher for IHG that I’ll be redeeming early August. Any recommendations for central London, apart from InterContinental Park Lane? (not impressed during my last stay there). I’m not brand precious, but wondering if something new and decent has opened in recent years. Thanks.

    • Benilyn says:

Kimpton in Russell Square (there is a review on HFP) is the only other high value alternative I think
CP Enbankment lower value, IC O2 further out

      • Jonathan says:

Kimpton is a beautiful hotel but the basic rooms which you would get with free night voucher (even with status) are very small.

      • Andrew says:

IC O2 is a quarantine hotel for the foreseeable.

        • Aston100 says:

Oh wow, do they recognise status amongst the quarantined guests?

    • Lady London says:

I’d either blow it in Berks. or Herts or abroad if I could get there

Central London was historically cheap August anyway if you waited to book and personally I’d use the free night voucher somewhere more useful and pay cash in London

  • Ant says:

Just wanted peoples opinion on whether I am being easily annoyed. We r currently lying by the pool at ME Ibiza rooftop close to the bar and there r workmen doing maintenance around the bar. On ladders painting the canopy. Smell of paint as we are no more than 2 meters away. Been going on for 2 hours.
    What would you do?

    • Yorkieflyer says:

      Go to the beach

    • Lady London says:

      I’d be annoyed.

How many other people also staying are there and annoyed?

Can you ask them with a big smile for some free drinks?

Would you prefer if the pool was closed to enable the work?

    • ChrisC says:

I’d have moved 1 hr 59 minutes ago and then forgotten about it.

    • Harry T says:

      I would move!

    • Anna says:

What kind of meters are we talking about? Gas meters? Or do you mean metres?

      • Anna says:

*I withdraw that if you are actually American.

        • Andrew says:

It’s an increasingly popular method of measurement in the UK press, the new London bus or Nelson’s column.

I don’t quite get it though. My electricity meter is tiny compared to the 40 year old NOSHEB ones in my parent’s house. Which are we supposed to use as the standard meter?

    • the_real_a says:

Does the beach area still smell of rotting fish?

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

Complain, see what they offer and move on to the beach.

P.s. how is Ibiza right now? Any clubs open etc.?

    • Ash says:

Book a better standard of hotel in future. Don’t go for cheaper options

    • The Savage Squirrel says:

Ooh, not PAINTING – because that’s noisy. 😀 You could lie there for 2 hours getting more and more annoyed and then complain in a shameless quest for compo. Or you could just move to the other side of the pool one minute after work started and stop being ridiculous?

  • Marie says:

I will be going on holiday this July I am not not sure where, I’ll be booking at the next announcement. Do you think its worth buying the tests for pre departure and day 2 now so that they actually arrive .Ryanair have a deal.

    • meta says:

What if the majority of the countries are put on a red list? I wouldn’t book anything speculatively.

      • meta says:

I mean for the tests. Given the fact that countries can change overnight again. I’d only book Qured return test before leaving UK and the testing package while I am on holiday before leaving for UK.

    • Harry T says:

Personally wouldn’t book/order tests yet – government don’t appear to be deciding the green list with any particularly rationality or predictability.

    • bafan says:

I asked Eurofins about that and they said it was fine and then on FT they were saying you can only buy them when travel is impending. So who knows 🤔.

  • Muhammad Abdullah says:

For cancelled flights, what is BA’s latest irregularity policy? Can they be moved to any date within ticket validity (maybe longer) irrespective of RBD? Can the trip length be changed on a return and can origin/dest be changed FOC within 200 miles? On a four segment trip, would just one cancellation give rise to these waivers?

    • Jonathan says:

Yes to all. May get some pushback if trying to use the 300 mile rule when BA are still flying to original destination on new dates.

      • Muhammad Abdullah says:

Merci. Is it one year from tix issue or original dept date?

        • Sam G says:

You can change either -3 / +14 days and within 300 miles or to any date as long as your outbound journey is complete within 1 year of ticket date (no destination change though )

Others on here are booking fully flex tickets more than a year since ticketing as EC261 allows you to pick a convenient rebooking date and then taking BA to small claims to recover the costs

          • Muhammad Abdullah says:

OK its not one year then, any date. Its just +/- 14 days?

Never mind EC261, this is a waiver.

          • Jonathan says:

The -3/+14 days is the standard BA policy. They have had extra flexibility during COVID. Either way those date restrictions are definitely not compatible with your EC261 rights.

          • Sam G says:

-3 / +14 only relevant if you also wanted an airport change (to within 300 miles)

Otherwise the COVID extra guideline is any date within 1 year of ticketing

        • Jonathan says:

Ticketing date (in all probability the day you purchased) if you don’t want a fight. You could insist on later date particularly if wanting like for like dates but it will take a battle with BA & probably small claims court to achieve this.

  • Paul says:

Being able to escape plague Island cannot come quickly enough.

Last week 2 nights at Hilton in Liverpool with fidget air con, overworked staff and could care less attitude. Ate out other than breakfast and had single day trip to North Wales and an expensive activity. Hotel was just £80 night for each room.

Eating out was a horrific experience though. On first night, the menu was so depleted I wanted to leave. There was no draught beer and service dire. Same at lunch next day in Wales and I simply loath ordering on the app and paying before I get anything, particularly when it’s overpriced and undercooked. There was no attempt to welcome people back simply a desire to plunder their wallets which most people seemed happy to allow.
Holiday in England or Wales? Never again!

    • sigma421 says:

Honestly think you got unlucky. I’ve been out 3 or 4 times since indoor dining became possible again here (central Scotland) and it’s been very pleasant.

      • TGLoyalty says:

        I’ve had very mixed experiences

      • Dr C says:

Yes its only really a fair comparison if you are visiting the same place as before, trying random places is the same as before.

    • Lord Doncaster says:

      “…and could care less attitude”

This phrase is one that grinds my gears more than anything….

    • John says:

Why don’t you move to another country

    • The Savage Squirrel says:

Stop eating and drinking at mid-market chain-hotel restaurants. They’re all rubbish. Had loads of lovely food at independent pubs, cafes and restaurants during the last month or so.

    • Rob says:

Having just spent a week away in the U.K., the number of menu items unavailable at literally every place we ate was just laughable. In a Pizza Express today they claimed all five mocktails were unavailable.

      • Super Secret Stuff says:

I was in Las Iguanas the other day, they claimed due to Covid they were unable to source some specific ingredients. Biggest load of rubbish I have heard in a while, did not leave any tip

  • YFP says:

    Hi all,

Looking to sign up to SeatSpy membership to really turbo charge holiday planning for next year. Wanted to find out from people who have signed up for this previosuly, is it worth getting the First Class sub instead of the premium? I think the major difference for me will be the instant vs hourly alerts? Do the seats tend to get snapped up pretty quickly, or is waiting an hour okay?

    • Rob says:

What are you after? If you absolutely must be on a certain flight on a certain day you may want to pay more. If you have some flex then it is less urgent.

      • YFP says:

Thanks for the reply Rob, yeah do have some flex so think i’ll go for the premium.

  • Reney says:

Given Virgin has a limit on max point earnt on CC per month, has anyone ever tried to bring forward the statement date?

    • ChasP says:

No but they almost doubled my credit limit from £3.6k to £7k after 7 months
