The HfP chat thread – Wednesday 7th July

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Datapoint- eventually received 10 elite free nights via Marriott master card on card anniversary day. This has now given me 50 nights in total. However would be rather hard to achieve additional 25 nights when no promotion from Marriott these days.

    • TGLoyalty says:

20 since you can use your plat award to get 5 nights.

      • Kevin says:

Still awaiting the plat award to arrive. Hopefully got time to decide whether I can manage to get extra 20 nights in next few months

        • meta says:

You need to select your award online. It won’t arrive automatically.

          • Kevin says:

How long generally i will have before make up my mind to which award I should go for?

          • Rob says:

1st week of January 2022 is the cut-off. If you don’t choose, you get the Suite Nights Awards.

    • ankomonkey says:

Kevin, did you need to make a special request to Creation or Bonvoy to get these nights or did they post automatically? Mine have yet to appear 🙁

      • Kevin says:

You can call and check when is your card anniversary date and wait till then to get the free nights being provided in your account. My card date was last Tuesday

      • Kevin says:

I mean call creation for your card anniversary date.

        • ankomonkey says:

Thanks! I’m worried Creation CS know less about the card than me!

  • Sam G says:

plenty of wimbledon tickets available in myWimbledon including Saturday centre court

  • SteveKicks says:

Coming back from a green list country to Scotland, has anyone had success buying a cheap private test rather than the £88 one the Scottish government suggest?

    • Clubx says:

You have to use their test unfortunately!

      • SteveKicks says:

Thanks for confirming, reading the website looked like you might have only needed their tests for amber countries 🙁

        Hope they change this soon!

  • YC says:

Can someone remind me if open jaw avios bookings can be booked online? Or does this require a telephone call?

  • Laura says:

    Morning.

Curious what HFPers would do here (if anything).

    https://www.theguardian.com/money/2021/jul/06/we-want-to-fly-to-the-us-but-norwegian-air-insists-we-go-to-europe

Of course, with hindsight, they should have held their nerve and not cancelled for a voucher in the first place, but the advice given seems a bit rubbish. They didn’t know that Norwegian would stop long haul flights when they accepted the voucher.
£4,000 is a lot of flights to Oslo/Stockholm!

    • Sam G says:

There could be a travel insurance angle here (perhaps if they got a letter from Norwegian withdrawing the credits and confirming they don’t plan to fly UK-US again)

      • Anna says:

I think travel insurance would be unlikely to cover this as it was a voluntary cancellation. They’d be in a better position if they’d waited for Norwegian to cancel, as pointed out in the article, or claimed on their insurance at the point the FCDO began to advise against travel to the US.

        • Sam G says:

If they took the voucher after the travel advice but before Norgy cancelled the flight I was thinking. Some insurers weren’t paying out if you did/could get a travel credit, even if it was a result of the change of advice.

If they cancelled because they didn’t want to go before anything prevented them from travel then agree, nothing to be done as it was their disinclination to travel

    • marcw says:

First, the consumer cancelled non-refundable flights – Norwegian was kind enough to provide them with vouchers.
Second, nothing more has to be said.

  • Dave says:

Had notification of a flight change from BA. Was booked on a 15:05 Basel flight has been cancelled and I’ve been moved onto the 08:15 instead. On the same day but very inconvenient. Is it a big enough change that I can request a full refund instead? Pre Covid a change of over 6 hours would have done that but wasn’t sure if things have changed

    • Sam G says:

Yes, any cancellation means a refund is possible regardless of time

  • Edison says:

Morning! I have spend £175 in waitrose on February and the offer is shown redeemed in tab. But yesterday, the £175 offer back again on the saved offer table. What should I do!?

    • mark2 says:

Has it got a new end date?

      • Edison says:

        18/07 , same as last

        • Andrew says:

Spend a few quid and see what happens – it’s cumulative, so if it’s still active, even £5 will credit back.

    • TGLoyalty says:

      I noticed this too.

Might use it on my next waitrose shop anyway.

  • Rob says:

Thanks for the Wimbledon tips above. Bought two for the Ladies Final for my wife and daughter as it seems Kerber will make it through, and indeed probably win.

Tickets still there but £200 each, note. Mine were a 500 block so right at the top, probably able to touch the roof!
