Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Tuesday 2nd February

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

I’ve had an amex charge card linked to PayPal and verified (they send a code on your bank statement to verify the card), I have since reported my card lost with a new card sent out and the card in my PayPal has already updated to the new card? is this normal or am I imagining things?

  • Ed says:

I’m not sure if this has been posted before, I’ve had a look and couldn’t see it. Is it possible to phone up (BA) and get an FTV converted to an e-voucher? I’m mainly interested in doing it as e-vouchers are easier to use than FTV’s. No need for a phone call etc. Thanks.

    • Rob says:

If your ticket was 100% cash, it will be converted eventually. BA is working through them. I don’t think you can expedite it but I am not 100% sure.

You can’t turn an FTV which includes Avios, a 241 etc into an eVoucher.

      • Ed says:

Thanks. Yes it was cash. Just realised it was BA Holidays……….does that make a difference or are they working through those too?

Understood on the Avios, 2-4-1 etc.

        • ChrisC says:

No those can’t be converted into a 125- e voucher.

And with a BA hols voucher you don’t have to phone up to use it if you don’t want to.

Book your new holiday online as normal then reply to the email with the 6 character code in it as say “please apply this voucher to the following booking (insert new booking ref)”

        • Jill ( Kinkell) says:

Ed….I’ve just changed dates and destination of a cash BA holiday. My original deposit was converted to a FTV ( done whilst talking to agent) and she then booked our new trip. Whilst I hadn’t received the voucher, she was able to see it and set in motion the new pricing and ticketing. All very efficient and clearly explained. I swapped a trip at beginning of June to late November.

Interesting conversation with Amex just now. Called to cancel the gold card they downgraded me to from plat recently. I was honest with the agent, telling him i intend to apply for the plat business card and to get the 40k sign up bonus I need to create a 6 months gap with cards as per the T & C’s.

After holding he was pretty confident the gap has now increased to 24 months! I did question it, thinking the misunderstanding was perhaps due to the 24 month period needed to re-apply for a personal plat, He double checked with the business plat team and sed yep, 24 months and that website T&C’s will be changed.

Might well be simple a case of HUACA but thought i’s share it here.

    • Rob says:

They haven’t told me and they are obliged to give me multiple weeks notice of changes.

      • Sina says:

Their website currently says: “You will not be eligible for any Welcome Bonus award if you currently hold or have held anyvMembership Rewards enrolled American Express Card in the pas three months.”

If anything, the 6 months is reduced to 3, as far as I can tell?!

        • jimc says:

I just noticed that too…yet further toward the bottom of the page in the summary T&C’s it says 6 months. Confusing.

    • Peter K says:

I had an amex chat agent tell me the same at the end of 2019 until I posted a link to the info on their own website and told him where to look. He really didn’t have a clue about the business products.

In case anyone might find it useful, Citizen’s Advice have just updated their advice on claiming compensation if your flight is delayed or cancelled .

    https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/consumer/holiday-cancellations-and-compensation/if-your-flights-delayed-or-cancelled/

  • kitten says:

    interesting.

They don’t seem to say their advice covers flights on any airline departing EU. Which it should, as EU261 can be claimed under where applicable regardless of residence or nationality.

    • memesweeper says:

They also don’t mention re-routing at a later date, nor taking action through the courts (only arbitration).

      • kitten says:

perhaps they didn’t want to make it complicated by referring to chargeback or s.75. I can kind of see why not

  • Wobly975 says:

OT. Has BA increased off-peak Avios for LHR – LAR Cyprus return in Club Europe? Wants 94,000 for a couple. Thought it should only be 68,000 (34k each) or am I behind the times?

  • BP says:

Scotland to introduce “managed quarantine” for arrivals from all countries. I assume by managed that wee Nicola means hotel quarantine.

    • Colin MacKinnon says:

Should she not be Big Nic? She’s the boss, after all.

But “managed quarantine” – could there be an app on the way like the Polish one where you download a photo to prove your location?

    • Louise K says:

How many international flights are arriving in Scotland at the moment? Any?

      • Chrism20 says:

Today there have been three. Stavanger and Bergen into Aberdeen and Doha into Edinburgh. Tomorrow there is no Doha.

    • Colin MacKinnon says:

BBC Scotland commentator asks (bearing in mind what Nicola does will be followed two weeks later by Boris):

      *********

“Will foreign holidays be impossible this summer?

“That’s unclear. But the first minister said efforts to eliminate Covid here last summer had been thwarted after the virus was “re-seeded [in Scotland] from overseas travel”.

So what’s crystal clear is she wants to avoid a wave of foreign holidays this summer causing another wave of Covid and lockdown in the autumn.

      *****

      • kitten says:

Funny that. I had the impression one or two foreign locations might have thought the virus was re-seeded in their locations by visitors from places including the UK

      • Magic Mike says:

Lol, Wee Nicola thinking that Covid could be “eliminated” from Scotland like some sort of tartan New Zealand.

I still think the English will be banned this summer.

        • Aston100 says:

Can you advise how I can blend in this summer?
If I get stopped by the cops, I’m planning on wearing a tartan hat and saying:
“Awright boaby, a’m juist heading tae th’ shaps fur mah grocery. By th’ wey, doon wi’ th’ sassenach. ”

Think I’d get away with it?

  • James says:

Can someone tell me whether Beardy can be paid off with a bendy backed creationist card with no fees? I know it works the other way round but does anyone have any current knowledge? Thanks

    • Genghis says:

      Why not try it?

    • Alex D says:

Try it, if you know it works the other way why bother trying to do the opposite…

      • Grant says:

        Anyone for debt tennis?

        • memesweeper says:

Remember, you may need to pass a source of funds test at some point. Playing ‘tennis’ with debt isn’t likely to be easy to explain, and I think it is a bendy t&cs violation too.

      • James says:

Because i would prefer points in a company I have confidence will be around to use them :). Thanks for the advice all.

        • Alex D says:

But it doesn’t matter, either way you’d earn the same number of points but one way is known to work with no fee and no bendy in between… also I think IHG is likely to last longer than virgin and also earns elite points on spending as a bonus to points

          • ashish says:

This James way you just keep paying each one with same amount so get points in both acount

    • OP says:

It can but you’ll be capped at paying £x00 per day/week, after which it will decline in my experience
