We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

How long do Curve refunds take to appear on the underlying card? I have a transaction showing as refunded on the 30th November but still hasn’t appeared on my underlying card or Curve Cash?
How does Curve decide what to refund to the underlying card or Curve cash – I seem to have refunds to both?

    • Mr. AC says:

Refund to Curve cash are instant and happen when Curve can’t match any original transaction to reverse (e.g. if a refund is higher than the charge). Refund to underlying cards typically take a week, but depending on the issuer it might be difficult to spot them. Ask Curve support, they’ll give your a merchant transaction number so you can chase your bank.

    • The real John says:

There was a period immediately after the death of Wirecard when refunds had to go to curve cash only.

I have had refunds take 3-4 weeks, sometimes it’s faster. I avoid curve if there is a chance something needs to be refunded (unless I can get away with refunding it to a debit card directly).

  • Doog1000 says:

Am I imaging it or did I read recently (thought on this site but can’t find reference to it or elsewhere online) that there is now a way of getting HSBC premier criteria waived by opening an HSBC account – with new Bendy limits thought the premier card could be a great way of generating Avios via Ernie

    • Doog1000 says:

      by opening HSBC business account

    • DANi says:

Pay ernie with bendy backed by IHG, pay IHG with Hong Kong card

    • Sprout says:

Datapoint – maybe useful for others as well.
Signed up for HSBC card this week. Salary met the criteria, and applied for Premier world elite immediately which was accepted. No need to pay anything into Premier bank account (ie salary) and no need to hold any investment product.

      • KBuffett says:

Did you already have a Premier Current Account with them?

        • Sprout says:

Nope, opened a premier current account and then immediately applied for the World elite CC. Accepted immediately and received card couple of days later. Whole process took less than a week from applying for Premier bank account to receiving World elite CC.

          • Jonathan says:

HSBC are about the most risk averse of all the high street banks. Take the mickey even remotely & your relationship will be brief!

      • Lady London says:

        which exact card please

        • Sprout says:

          HSBC Premier World Elite CC

        • Sprout says:

Now need to work out how nicely it plays with magnetic bendy 😉

          • Sina says:

How do you say “no need” while criteria specifically says you need to have £75k salary and investments or meeting premier in another country?! When you open an account online, you have to confirm you meet the criteria?!

Or you have to have the criteria waived by having a HSBC Kinetic.

Just because you opened an account and got a card doesn’t mean they’ve waived the criteria for you?!

          • Sprout says:

@sina – I say “no need” because that’s what happened! Salary meets criteria = Premier bank account. Applied for world elite CC – accepted. I don’t have accounts in another country and no idea what HSBC kinetic is.
I now have the card in hand and linked to curve and spending against it. I didn’t say anything about waiving criteria merely relayed what happened for me.
Your choice if you believe it or not!

          • Rob says:

Might be some year-end bonus targets that need hitting!

      • jil says:

I was able to continue to use my HSBC premier for about 1 yr after I moved away my mortgage, then received a letter saying they will downgrade my account because I don’t meet the criteria.

        • Jimbob says:

I’ve never had any HSBC investments, mortgage, insurance etc but it wasn’t a problem opening a premier account.

I wonder if they have relaxed the rules over the lastb12 months, as they have done with the salary requirements?

          • Anuj says:

I had a look and nowhere does it say having a hsbc kinetic account waives the salary or any other criteria

  • Gin and Tonic Please says:

So in the last 48 hours, I’ve had cancellation emails from BA for all my flights in 2021. Sigh. For one (Crete in May), they’ve rebooked me on a flight the following day. Am I right in thinking they have duty of care for hotel/meals (exc. booze) for the extra night? Or does that not count given it’s 5 months’ notice? Should I get this in writing from them before accepting the flight? Thanks in advance!

    • Anna says:

You’re still owed duty of care, which has reminded me so am I for the 3 flights BA has moved for me in the past few days! It’s only compo which requires a cancellation within 14 days (though not being at the moment anyway).

      • Gin and Tonic Please says:

Great. Thanks, Anna! Do I need to confirm this with them in writing before accepting the new flight?

        • Lady London says:

Best to phone and mention you are assuming the extra day’s hotel and meals will be provided and ask them to confirm within, say, the next week or two do they wish to arrange and pay for a suitable hotel directly or should you make your own arrangements.

You need to be seen to give them a chance to provide.

Your right is open and shut however I would only use it if srranded en route or before coming back.

          • Anna says:

I can’t wait to ask them which hotel they are going to put 4 of us in in Grand Cayman, though I suspect it would be the HI!

      • Colin MacKinnon says:

Hasn’t BA just cancel these flights. Full stop. So no compo, no duty of care, since it is outside the 14 day period.

Then, as a matter of goodwill, they have offered to rebook on a different date at no extra cost?

(I wonder why BA doesn’t just cancel flights in 2021 where First is no longer available, then open new flights with different flight numbers and offer CW seats on those to the affected/afflicted pax. That way they’d avoid 75% downgrade compo, surely?)

        • meta says:

Duty of care applies even if cancelled more than 14 days out though BA will deny it and you’ll have to MCOL. I have just recently won a case against BA which included a bit of duty of care (flight was cancelled more than 25 days out). Someone else reported here that they’ve won as well.

Cancelling flights and reinstating them with different flight numbers doesn’t make them less liable.

          • meta says:

And they would have to put affected passengers in F on other airlines should they remove it or still offer 75% downgrade compo.

        • Anna says:

As meta says, cancellations are still subject to EU261, regardless of when they happen, or I’m sure BA would just go ahead and ditch their pax!

  • AndyGWP says:

Legal travel clarification – am I correct in that the rules state that those living in England, are not allowed to go over the border to Scotland unless for essential business, and this can be enforced by the police (rather than a recommendation)

    • Anna says:

I think it ends this weekend, depends what they replace it with.

    • Sandra says:

We drove to Penrith today to meet our friends from Scotland who kindly brought our daughter, who is studying at Glasgow uni, half way home to meet us. We had lunch in a hotel on the outskirts of Penrith, the 3 of them at one table the 2 of us on another (specified by hotel). Neither of us saw any police checking vehicles other than speed camera vans – they were out in force. We passed 3, they passed 2. So I assume all the Police are only interested is easy money from speeding not border control!

  • xcalx says:

Can Tesco clubcard vouchers be used for BA Avios to anyone with the same surname.
    Thanks

    • Anna says:

The problem might be that the Clubcard number and address might have to match what’s on the BAEC account.

      • meta says:

The way it always worked for me is to order from my account using someone else’s clubcard vouchers. Basically when you order just put the total amount of vouchers then add manually someone else’s voucher codes. Different surnames weren’t a problem. I haven’t done it in a while, but I remember that you have to do it via desktop site.

    • Chris Heyes says:

xcalx A few years ago it didn’t matter as long as same surname
but unfortunately from about 3/4 years ago they seem to have got more vigilant or their IT as got better
(eg G Heyes/ C Heyes was very easy to get away with lol)

    • xcalx says:

Thanks for the replies. Same first and surname but 30 years age gap. I have used a small voucher to test the waters.

  • Nick says:

So after over a decade, more than a dozen cards and £100s made, I’m calling time on my stoozing days – the numbers just don’t stack up any more. Santander is the end of the line… any suggestions for how to pay it off and get a few points to go out with a bang? From previous comments I don’t think bendy works, presumably Tesco debit card won’t work for CC points… anything else?

  • Nick says:

Guys a curve question ( as they dont seem interested in helping!) I have a blue curve ( free card) prior to getting the physical card I did a test purchase of £50 with ERNIE this worked. My plan was to buy more ERNIE however since having the card my payment has been declined everytime, saying refer to Curve card supplier. Any help greatly appreciated

    • Doug M says:

So many variations of problems and successes reported without any means of verification mean it’s hard to offer anything precise. Have you made other purchases successfully using Curve? Do you have multiple underlying cards, do some work and some not. My attitude has always been start small, see what works, see what fees or interest maybe charged, and take it from there.

    • The real John says:

Hit and miss these days, make sure it’s not a stupid user error like typing the expiry date wrong. Try different underlying card, double check curve address is the same as ernie address

    • Doug M says:

Re-reading your comment, you contacted Curve abut this? I’d not have done that. When you use Curve to buy NS&I products if the underlying card is a credit card that’s the very definition of manufactured spend, and if the underlying card is not a credit card why bother with Curve.

      • Nick says:

Hi Doug. The response says to contact curve, which, if I have got it right is what you make the purchase with, opting afterwards for which card/account you wish to use to pay ‘Curve’ as such?

        • The real John says:

Yes, because if you are a genuine NS&I depositor you will be using your current account debit card and obviously if that doesn’t work you have to ask your bank what is wrong.

Now if you had stolen someone else’s debit card you wouldn’t call up their bank and ask “why won’t you let me steal my victim’s money”.

You are using Curve to circumvent restrictions so if it doesn’t work find something else which works.

          • Lady London says:

…and don’t call Curve. Regardless of any error messages. You are not a sheep. You are using a facility in a way it’s t’s and c’s indicate the provider does not want you to. So ruminate about how else you might be able to do what you need to as if you call them they are not going to be inteterested in solving your problem and could even shut down your account.

We don’t mind but we do mind if they also shut the way completely too, with calls to them they might just decide to.

            You’re welcome.

    • DT says:

Did you change the card details on NS&I to your physical card details once you activated it?

The virtual card they give you while waiting for the physical card has different expiry dates and CVV I believe. And the virtual card is deactivated once you activate your physical card

      • Nick says:

Hi DT so I cannot store card details on NSI so have to type them in as per what my curve card says

    • babyg_wc says:

Slow clap for Nick… Trying to do MS with his curve and wondering why curve aren’t interested… First rule of fight club…

  • Colin MacKinnon says:

Now got an Amex Business Plat. Do you get any bonuses for adding extra cardholders like the personal one does?

    • Rob says:

Yes. Occasionally you get bonuses for adding multiple people – I had a 5k one showing online last month.
