The HfP chat thread – Tuesday 1st December

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/12/01/the-hfp-chat-thread-tuesday-1st-december/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Looking to book a Maldives trip for March. Could anyone recommend a good travel agent? Looking at around £6000 all in for 2 people all inclusive.

    • Number9 says:

      Trailfinders

    • ashraj says:

I have used Trailfinders in the past and can recommend them. Also worth getting quotes from Best At Travel & Turquoise Holidays

    • LST says:

In my experience Maldives’ specialists like purely Maldives and simply Maldives are very knowledgeable and normally can’t be beaten on price

    • AviosNewbie says:

Book direct – Kanuhura have a great blackfriday deal still running. I just booked it for 01-08 March! What dates are you traveling?

  • Crafty says:

Anyone managed to get anything out of Kimpton (Clocktower in my case) for forced cancellations? Was surprised that my lengthy voicemail message (cancelling 3 stays) didn’t throw a token 5,000 points in.

    • Jerrry Butler says:

I find that emailing the hotel and head office does the trick, or posting something mildly negative on their corporate Facebook page. You haven’t missed much at the clocktower though, as its a bit two bob.

    • Anna says:

I loved it – they are VERY generous with the social hour (2 hours of free flowing wine and beer) and bar coupons (we got £20 for one night). Make a bit of noise when you turn up for a re-booked stay and they’ll probably throw loads of stuff at you. Also Emyr can get you the breakfast and $100 credit which is worth nearly as much as the room rate for one night!

    • TGLoyalty says:

Seriously? They are being FORCED to close and you expect them to compensate you?

      • xcalx says:

+1 A serious case of DYKWIA

      • Crafty says:

They’re not being forced to close for the dates I have booked. It’s a commercial decision.

Although I don’t feel entitled to anything, I’m surprised because if they’re bothering to spend money on somebody ringing me, normally a hotel would throw in a sweetener, even if with a catch (e.g. here’s £20 bar credit for your next stay with us).

  • Mike says:

Amex Hilton promo (Spend £200 or more, get £50 back) only applies to certain hotels in Belgium, France, Germany, Spain, UK etc. Are they really strict about this? If I book online for a hotel in Turkey for example, how will they track?

    • Rob says:

Each hotel has its own merchant code (because, remember, each hotel is a separate business – it’s not owned or in most cases even run by Hilton).

    • TGLoyalty says:

All Hilton hotels outside of the USA bill their own stays through their own system/card machines.

    • James says:

Re this offer – Hilton spend £200 get £50 back. Is it £200 for one booking or will several £60 stays at different hotels (in qualifying locations) trigger it too?
      The terms are unclear.

      • TGLoyalty says:

        Works cumulatively.

      • Rob says:

Cumulative is fine, done it myself with the current £50 offer.

The Costa at Hilton Olympia on Kensington High Street counts towards this offer by the way, although they don’t sell gift cards.

        • James says:

          Thanks.
Did you stay at the Hilton Olympia Rob? I was looking at that, stayed a lot in the past. Do they have bar / restaurant open?

  • BuildTheWall says:

Tesco trying to keep customers engaged after news of avios withdrawal? Double points on 2 shops and quite a few items given 25 points each. Every little helps.

    • Ben says:

I’ve had the double points, and 25 point bonuses for the past three quarters now… After nothing for about 4 years!!

    • Genghis says:

My first coupons for ages. V easy items too so that the items are effectively free.

    • TGLoyalty says:

      I got spend £5 get £5 back

      • Steve S says:

        I got free mince pies

        • Sandra says:

Free mince pies for me too plus a couple of extra points vouchers & double points on 2 shops. Mind you have been using Lidl a lot recently with just top ups in Tesco of stuff Lidl don’t sell/Tesco do better, so that might be why rather than the demise of Avios

      • 747_Brat says:

Where can I find this £5 off £5 offer please?

  • ashraj says:

Is it worth activating the 10K spend on the AMEX BA PP now or waiting until closer to my anniversary date which is June next year. I think i read in the comments a few days ago the 2-1 Vouchers currently being issued are for 30 months?

    Thanks

    • BuildTheWall says:

You are paying roughly £100 more for triggering the voucher in June instead of Dec, assuming you’ll be downgrading or cancelling the card. If you are going to keep the BAPP, makes sense to wait.
But are you sure if the voucher issued in June 2021 will also have an expiry of 30 months?

      • ashraj says:

Yes that was my thinking to put all expenses in the short term on the AMEX and then
downgrade after its triggered. I still have a FT voucher to use for cancelled flights this year.

No idea if the June 2021 voucher will be for 30 months! – but i don’t think its likely.

  • Sloth says:

Curve…£10 back when spending £100 or more at Amazon…

Says valid for next 14 days but imagine will be pulled before then

Credit to hit your account by 17/12

    • Allan says:

      Where are you seeing this?

      • AndyGWP says:

I got an email from them – assume Sloth did too

      • Zana says:

I didn’t get an email but when I opened up my app earlier today, the offer showed up as a pop-up. Once you close the pop-up, the offer can’t seem to be found anywhere else in the app.

  • Craig says:

A positive update from my ‘Christmas at Kew’ event which I couldn’t attend because of the tier system. The ticket supplier has now agreed to refund minus the £1 a ticket booking fee. A positive result for all because I’ll now keep my membership even though I only visit about twice a year.

  • Jane says:

anyone having issues or success topping up Revolut today ? I keep getting a text code through to enter and then a blank screen with the verification not going through.
