Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Tuesday 1st December

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/12/01/the-hfp-chat-thread-tuesday-1st-december/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

  • Baji Nahid says:

Anyone find any good airline deals on Cyber Monday or Black Friday? Apart from Virgin and the BA 20% off, and the flicker Ryanair sale, really there was nothing to be seen or put out this year (understandably so)

  • Samantha says:

Hi are you able to get a sign up bonus on the virgin money/atlantic credit cards more than once? If so, how long after closing your account do you have to wait before applying again and qualifying for the sign up bonus? Thanks

    • Mo says:

I was able to get the bonus on the paid card after having the free card for maybe just over a year

However its a risk, virgin seem to be very bad for credit limits and if you don’t get a good one then it really impacts your ability to get points.

      • JohnT says:

Their terms say after 6 months with neither card.

        • ChasP says:

Got a bonus last year after 8 months gap, but with a lower credit limit down from £9000 to £4000

  • johnny_c-l says:

Quite a few new Amex offers appeared this morning including the usual Fenwicks £20 back WYS £80 in time for Christmas.

    • John Caribbean says:

Will this be cumulative? Thinking of a few inexpensive hampers to different addresses

  • BA-Flyer says:

25% off food at select UAE Hilton properties (for Gold and Diamond) or 20% for other levels. Plus 500 bonus points if you spend over 90AED. A nice extra for anyone considering a holiday. I think it runs through to June next year.

    • meta says:

Link please. Is it a special rate that includes this? I can’t see anything on Hilton website nor do the rates come with this.

    • Rantallion says:

1500 Avios for £100 spend on my BAPP appeared on my account this morning. First 75,000 applicants.

      • old codger says:

Mine too! Just after a spent £1K a few hours prior on a new Lenevo computer!! Amazon vouchers here I come.

        • Alex says:

If you add it to your offers before the payment has cleared from pending sometimes it will still trigger. Happened with me in the past

      • Anna says:

Is that £100 in one transaction, it’s not quite clear in the Ts and Cs?

        • Rob says:

I assume most of us will have at least one £100 transaction between now and the year end. We should know within 3-4 days whether cumulative works.

          • Paul says:

Same 1500 for £100 on my BA AX, and on my wife’s AX Gold Credit, 1000 Avios for £5 spend (until 03/12)!

        • Sandra says:

I got 500 Avios up to x 2 on my BA (blue) card for £500 spend, the terms read to me that it is not cumulative but not really clear. Also got the Fenwick spend £80 get £20 back on my gold card, hoped the 1st of December might bring something more interesting/useful!

          • Fab212 says:

I have got an Amex Gold credit on 25/11, spent c £1,000 on it already but I have not got any offer at all – is this normal?

  • Mike says:

IST-LHR in January on BA CE re-timed from 5pm to 8am on the same day. (change of schedule it seems, 1 flight a day and all 8am departure). I can’t make the 8am on that same day and will have to move it to the next day.

So I understand from TGLoyalty (thank you) from his comment 2 days ago that I can potentially claim back for my hotel/meal for the extra night that I now have to incur. What are the chances of BA paying me back for this? Is this duty of care governed by any regulation or just something that BA might do historically?

Also called the BA hotline and chap on the line could not confirm if they’ll pay anything but to keep my receipts and submit it when I’m back.

    • Harry T says:

Duty of care is covered under EC261 regulations, which are also part of UK law. If you google EC261, you will be able to find out more from the helpful official website. BA might not be forthcoming but that doesn’t change the fact that they have legal obligations.

    • AJA says:

As Harry says Duty of care is covered under EC261. BA definitely on the hook for the extra night since they’ve messed you around. You won’t be able to recover alcohol but the hotel bill (around £200) and food and tea, coffee or soft drinks are covered. I would also claim the cost of taxi to move from one hotel to another if you have to move though expect BA to reject that. You will have to submit a claim online with scanned copies of receipts after you return.

      • Mike says:

Thanks all! Hopefully the claim will be painless.

        • Lady London says:

Do not hesitate to.file a moneyclaimonline dot gov dot uk if your claim is ignored/not dealt with/’final refusal’/not paid after about 2 months or three times of asking following your return.

You dont have ti stay or eat cheap just reasonable local rates. For example pre-covid a local Heathrow room might well have cost up to 200 or so (less now).

  • Andrew says:

I have 1,500 Avios when you spend £100 anywhere (by 31 December, open to 75,000 cardholders) which is handy.

    • Andrew says:

One bit of crucial information: on my BAPP.

    • BSI1978 says:

      +1.

    • Sam says:

      Ta

For me, a rather feeble 500 Avios for spending at least £500. But I can do it twice

    • Lee says:

Just downgraded my BAPP, so got both spend £100 for 1500 and £500 for 500 Avios offers on same card.

    • Andrew says:

Is this a £100 transaction or across multiple to the total value of £100 (like the MR promotion a couple of weeks ago on Plat/Gold)?

      • Andrew says:

It’s not stated in the details but I am guessing the latter.

      • AJA says:

I’m assuming spend £100 in one go although I’m not sure if the spend £500 to get 500 is the same (don’t have that offer though).

    • WaynedP says:

      + 1

But not on supp BAPP, which I guess makes sense, otherwise Mrs dP would be spending her cash to top up MY Avios balance.

      Thanks for the heads up.

      • WaynedP says:

Would have been even better to have received this before I spent £120 on my Boots Covid-19 PCR travel test on Sunday morning, but can’t have it all, I guess.

Still awaiting result (will be 48 hours at 11am today) and am due to fly out to JNB at 21:10 tonight, so fingers still crossed.

        • Phil says:

@WaynedP – Did you get your result yet?

          • WaynedP says:

@Phil, I see you picked up my later comment confirming I’m all good to fly.

            Thanks for your concern.

    • chris1922 says:

Same, 1500 Avios for any £100 spend. Some of the easiest Avios ever earnt !

    • AJA says:

Thanks for the heads up. On my BAPP too. Just saved it. T&Cs weirdly state “only available at merchants which are open and trading” – not sure how you’d spend £100 via Amex card with a place that isn’t open and isn’t trading?. 🙂

      • TGLoyalty says:

Making it clear Because people phone up and complain they can’t use their offer and expect it anyway?

    • Tilly says:

Same. Probably the best offer I’ve had on my BAPP for a while.

    • Mike says:

Err nothing for me on my BAPP…

    • Secret Squirrel says:

2 x 500 avios on £500 spends on free BA Amex,

  • cinereus says:

Anyone found Spanish Abbey and Ernie aren’t playing ball through Bendy the last few days? Even very small (i.e. three figure) amounts.

    • Crafty says:

I’ve reluctantly concluded the Curve game may be over – for me at least. Not been able to pay HMRC or Ernie for weeks.

      • DANi says:

I’ve paid ernie today with ihg via curve.. no fees…and will pay ihg with hong kong

      • Annabel says:

I have used free bendy with Ernie successfully last few days

      • JP-MCO says:

Have you got a Curve ‘Business’ card? If so, you must now pay a very small surcharge to HMRC to use it with them and must specifically select that it’s a Business Debit card. I had to pay a fee of around £200 the other day when I paid my tax bill. It netted me around 200,000 Avios on HSBC World Elite card though so it seemed worth it.

      • JP-MCO says:

** I should clarify that the fee is for HMRC card processing and not a Curve surcharge. I have Curve Metal which still includes unlimited transactions to HMRC without additional charges.

    • cinereus says:

To be clear the question was about Spanish Abi. Other cards still work fine for large amounts.

      • TGLoyalty says:

Unfortunately the only certainty in this game is that things are guaranteed to change.

Just have to find the next opp

  • Vin says:

Email from BA offering 30% bonus Avios on converting IHG and Radisson rewards points to Avios. Offer ends 9th December. Still not a great deal …
