The HfP chat thread – Tuesday 1st December

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/12/01/the-hfp-chat-thread-tuesday-1st-december/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Looks like Escape Lounge set to re-open at MAN T1 on 5 DEC and Aspire on 10 DEC.

  • Martha says:

Hi. Can you hold more than one MR earning card? I have the gold, can I get a different MR amex earning card at the same time?

    • Phil says:

Yes, I had Amex Plat, Amex Plat Credit, Amex Gold and Amex Green all at once.

  • The Urbanite says:

Has anyone managed to get their Curve limits increased from £1.6m pa?

    • Martha says:

Urbanite. Are you close to the limit?

      • The Urbanite says:

Not really, just curious is all!

        • Super Secret Stuff says:

it’s a cap imposed on them by Visa and MasterCard. Designed to stop / limit abuse and money laundering

          • The Urbanite says:

Thanks. For some I am sure it’s not so much a limit as it is a target!

          • Genghis says:

@Super Secret Stuff Even now Curve is a principal member of Mastercard post Wirecard?

    • Brian W says:

My limit was increased from £50k pa to £1.6m pa last week. I didn’t even request it, is that normal? Over the moon but surprised at the jump. Been metal for about 6 months and started to ‘vary my spend’ about 6 weeks ago.

  • Martha says:

VA+ card. I cancelled in August which I regret. Is there a chance I will get accepted again nowand I am risking the bonus?

    • TGLoyalty says:

You have to wait atleast 6 months

    • Rob says:

You will be automatically rejected. You then need to call and ask for reconsideration – should be OK as you voluntarily cancelled (you weren’t thrown out!) but unlikely to get a bonus. IT can be dodgy though …

  • Phil says:

I tried to log-in to my easyJet Plus account today and my password didn’t work. When I went to reset it, I didn’t receive the reset email. Has anyone else experienced this? Am I resigned to a long wait on the phone to easyJet?

    • Jody says:

I just tried to log in and was prompted to reset my password. I got the email almost immediately and the reset worked.

Not very happy with Easyjet though, not sure if Rob will cover it on here but it looks like their hand baggage policy has changed. I’ve received emails for all 3 of our trips next year telling me that from 10th Feb, the hand luggage size is changing to 45x36x20 and MUST be able to fit under the seat in front. Only if you have booked upfront or extra legroom seats can you bring the bigger size 56x45x25 that can go in the overhead locker.

For passengers that have booked trips already for after this comes into play, they are offering free hands free, which means you can drop your larger cabin bag off and it will go into the hold for free. You have to show the email you’ve been sent to get this though.

This isn’t going to work for me, one of the reasons I love Easyjet is because of the generous hand luggage size (dimensions same as BA). I can pack all my medical equipment in along with my clothes for a weekend trip. It is imperative that my medical equipment doesn’t go into the hold, as I simply can’t risk my baggage getting lost.

Looks like I’m going to be penalised for having medical equipment and will have to pay to upgrade my seat (I currently get free standard seat selection because of my medical needs) in order that I can retain my hand luggage. I guess I can try ringing the call centre (oh what fun!!) and see where I stand.

      • Lady London says:

I do not see in which universe Easyjet thinks they can change the terms and conditions after you bought your ticket no matter if you travel after they’ve changed the rules for new tickets.

        Can anyone clarify?

        • Jody says:

I agree, but not something I fancy arguing about at the desk! It seems like total madness if they’re allowed to change bookings already made.

  • Ben says:

    Hi alll

Posted already, but I can’t find it!
Can you add a virgin credit card voucher to an existing booking? Made a points booking last night online but can’t get through to the call centre?

    Thanks

    • Rob says:

Virgin call centres tend not to follow the rules, so if you get a friendly agent I expect it would be possible.

    • Bumper says:

I’ve upgraded an existing points booking, much later with a voucher

      • Dan says:

Same. Whatsapp service works for this. Takes a few days for initial reply then they’re quite quick back and forth to make it happen.

  • Sprout says:

I’m looking to apply for the HSBC premier world elite card and have a couple of questions I’m hoping someone can help with..
1)I meet the income criteria but need to get another Financial product. It mentions a life insurance policy is OK and I got a quote for £2 odd per month. However, this wasn’t mentioned in rob’s review so I’m wondering if it’s new or I’m misinterpreting as it seems “too easy”.
    2) I gather additional cardholders can gain access to Loungekey lounges and you can get upto 3 additional cards. I think the cost is £60pa for this whether you have 1,2 or 3 additional cards. I’ve been thru’ the blurb but can’t see it explicitly stated – could anyone confirm please?

    • Nigel W says:

Hi, I’m pretty sure that is the case for loungekey. Each additional HSBC card is £60pa.

    • Paul says:

I have an sticks and shares ISA with £2.5k in it which I add £500 per month to and that worked to get the card. Yes £60 per supplementary cardholder.

      • Sprout says:

OK thanks, definitely £60 per additional cardholder?
The Pointsguy (sorry!) implies it’s £60 for up to 3 cardholders – thanks

“Cardholders will also get up to three supplementary cards for £60 (total) each year, with all three receiving the same premium LoungeKey membership, which is a really valuable perk if travelling with family.”

    • rams1981 says:

I applied in branch and once I was approved for World Elite I have never have had any of their products. I did have some cash in my HSBC premier account that I said I would use to invest in a product. Never chased and so far never had any issues. Have cancelled and re-obtained World Elite as well since then.

      • BuildTheWall says:

Did you have to call them to cancel the WE card? Or did you apply for the free one?

      • The Urbanite says:

Applying in branch does seem to be the way forward, the staff are most helpful.

    • the_real_a says:

An investment product in my case was cash in savings account. Its a negotiation – i pointed out that there was no way i was going to take an inferior investment product, when as soon as i was approved for Premier i would be able to receive better premier rates.

    • Jon G says:

I was able to get a ‘regular investment’ account set up via their GIA – it’s their robo-advisory product – where I paid in £100 a month into one of 5 risk profiles based on a questionnaire. Fees were minimal (less than £1 a year). Didn’t want to open as ISA as I can get better products and lower fees elsewhere.

      • Genghis says:

I’ve got a mortgage but I understand that £100 in a general investment account, like Jon G mentions, does the trick. Or play it cool like Rams1981
