The HfP chat thread – Saturday 28th November

Links on Head for Points may pay us an affiliate commission. A list of partners is here.

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/11/28/the-hfp-chat-thread-saturday-28th-november/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Datapoint: Today BA cancelled reservation from BKK-LHR on 13 January.

    • Harry T says:

Sorry to hear that, although I suspect you wouldn’t have been able to make the trip.

      • BJ says:

No, been obvious for a while now that the trip wasn’t going to happen, hopefully game on for our respective summer plans. Probably spend Xmas at Craigendarroch depending what the rest of the family want to do. Hoping for snow but no sign of that yet either.

        • Polly says:

Our spare HKG was cancelled also. As was the QR one to HKT…got a new kUL one for Feb on BA. Wonder if that will go either, as Malaysia still not open .
Shame hope you do get some snow, if only for a Christmas feeling….

Looking at using the Amex gold offer for Harvey Nichols (spend £150, get £30 credit). Unfortunately gift cards seem to be excluded, any successful workarounds? The Black Friday deals haven’t thrown up many bargains this time but I do shop there fairly regularly.

    • dezbez says:

I think gift cards should be ok, i recently had success with a £50 card included in my basket. It’s when you’re taken to a third party website they don’t tend to work but with HN you stay on their website.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Online Gift cards are ok from HN as they are processed by HN themselves.

    • Harry T says:

Gift cards trigger the amex offers.

    • Nigel W says:

Gift cards do trigger the offer considering that’s what i did a few weeks ago.

The only pain is trying to spend it on online orders (need to contact them post-order)

  • meta says:

For anyone thinking going to The Langley, I just had an email to say the indoor pool is closed till 15 Dec. I’m there two days later so hoping that it will be open.

    • Lady London says:

@Meta isnt The Langley closing again on January? if so, sounds unlikely

      • meta says:

They are not closing in January unless the area goes into Tier 3 by then. 17th Dec should still be ok though.

Tough times for BA cabin crew, hope she wears a mask 😬

  • Lady London says:

    …and a solid VPN.

Though certain airlines staff traditionally had a bit of a rep for this I gather.

I’m being good today so I’m not saying they as British Airways ratcheted cabin crew pay down to unliveable levels, what else do they expect ?

    • memesweeper says:

I worked in a firm where a well placed and senior (but fairly young) woman was caught out selling sex via an escort site. Today I wasted an hour in Morrissons to save £125. I don’t need the money and neither did she.

      • Nick says:

        maybe both needed the thrill?

      • TGLoyalty says:

        Every little bit counts …

What’s the saying? everyone gets their kicks in different ways?

      • Lady London says:

How was she caught out? did this lead to loss of employment due to a morals clause? or was it just embarrassing ?

        Enqiring minds need to know…

        • Nick says:

          You asked my question 🤣

        • BS says:

If I were an employer I wouldn’t mind if it didn’t affect company work or bring the company in to disrepute. However she is clearly identified with BA in this case, so she may we’ll have a case to answer…

        • Anna says:

Disgruntled colleague or punter, I would imagine. Whatever you think of the Sun, it seems to have the best intelligence sources in the business!

          • Anna says:

My guess is she would have been sacked for some very serious breaches of her terms of employment – BA is not going to want their planes to be seen as knocking shops!

  • Lady London says:

Hum. Deliveroo is delivering Aldi products (last I saw a selection of about 150 products) in some areas on a trial cooperation apparently.

  • Fred S says:

Question about BA 20% BFOffer promo: Can it be used to book into premium and upgrade using avios? I can;t find a promo box when attempting a straight UUA booking. Is it a question of booking without UUA, using the voucher and then upgrading?

    • BJ says:

That is the way you should be doing UUA anyway to reduce the risk of paying over the odds. Book the revenue flight and then upgrade it online. If that doesn’t work try calling them within 24h cooling off period so you can cancel for free if they don’t let you do the upgrade at an acceptable price over the phone.

  • Phil H says:

Last night I booked Virgin Upper Class LHR-LAS//LAX-MAN in October for 27400 points round trip per person plus taxes & charges. Thanks Head for Points for article & contributors in the comments that gave me knowledge of combining 50% redemption offer with credit card upgrade voucher, of which I used two.
