The HfP chat thread – Saturday 28th November

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

HFP-Wordmark-Black

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/11/28/the-hfp-chat-thread-saturday-28th-november/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

  • FlyingJ says:

Bendy is declining all transactions on any underlying card for me. Error message is just to try another card every time. Doesn’t say anything about reaching limits. Anybody else have this?

    • Michael says:

Mine is working fine and my limits seem to have been hiked to some crazy heights!

    • Chrisasaurus says:

Yes and it’s because of the underlying card- not liking the txn type since Curve started messing with the MCC the other day I think?

Or, at least it’s the case for me. Particular card isn’t playing ball, but a couple still are

      • FlyingJ says:

For me not even debit cards are working. All underlying cards and transactions are being declined.

        • The Original Nick says:

How do I get my monthly Curve card limits up from £5k to anything higher? I’ve tried contacting them but nothing will send.

          • DT says:

Have you checked your limits in the last few days? Everyone has been bumped to £4.5k+ / day, £1.4mil+ / year

    • @mkcol says:

What did Curve support say when you queried it?

      • The Original Nick says:

My limits haven’t changed and when I try and use the support it won’t send.

        • Dan says:

Mine now seems to be £1.6m??! After being £50k for the last 4 years.

          Surely a mistake?

          • Dan says:

            And 9k per day

          • Michael Jennings says:

Yes, my annual limit has been upped from £50,000 to £1.6m, my annual ATM limit has been upped from £40,000 to £100,000, and my daily limit has been upped from £3,700 to £9,000. And monthly limits are no longer being shown.

          • John says:

            Look at thread from yesterday.
They are doing a trial on limits for a couple of weeks.
They are going to review again and amend

        • Catman says:

          Try updating your app

          • Jimmy says:

These are crazy limits – I wonder if curve are looking at bumping up numbers for a potential sale.

  • Baji Nahid says:

Would love to hear from anyone who have grabbed a bargain so far, do share what you found. I got some nice clothes for 40p believe it or not! (pretty little thing!)

    • Ali M says:

      wow well done baji.
My only black Friday purchase was get a 75 pound costa gift card and get 15 pounds extra 🥴 Nothing else was ‘wow enough’

      • Andrew says:

According to Which? 9 out of 10 BF “deals” were the same piece or lower before BF. It’s all just a marketing ploy.

      • TGLoyalty says:

Better in someone’s wardrobe actually being worn than in a box on a warehouse shelf?

Fast fashion has taken a big hit with lcokdowns and less socialising.

    • BP says:

A 5 piece Circulon Infinite pan set for £37!! Almost seemed like a misprice it was so cheap.

An Ooni Pizza oven for £154 after using the Amex £30 off Selfridge’s offer.

      • memesweeper says:

That’s a steal for an oooni- well done

        • Lady London says:

Aldi Germany’s doing them for about £68 – or at least the pizza oven looks mighty like the ones that have been selling about £300 this year (were £400 previously)

      • YC says:

Where did u see the 5 piece deal? Can’t see it on Amazon or their site

    • Kevin says:

Sonos speaker or beam seems much cheaper on BF

      • TGLoyalty says:

You can always get 15% off via student discount though. beam and move seems to be a bit higher.

I’ve stacked with some JL GCs to get an additional 7% plus perhaps 8 virgin miles.

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

Melia gift cards came back into stock so grabbed a couple of them.

Massive yanke candle gift box for £25.

A few books on sale. Pretty good tbh

      • Super Secret Stuff says:

On and a bosh washing machine (series 6) from amazon with double points because mone packed up yesterday morning

  • Catman says:

My final Lloyds Upgrade Voucher which had previously been extended to 30 November has been extended again by 3 months to 24 February 2021…..Hopefully things might be more settled by then so I can actually book something

    • TGLoyalty says:

Did you phone or was that automatic?

      • Catman says:

I phoned and asked as I was trying to rebook my perma cancelled return flight from Bangkok – I have been stuck over here since 12 March!!!! Happily

      • Reeferman says:

I phoned too a few days ago – asked for a 30-day extension (which was what I was told would “probably” be OK earlier this year) and, similarly, was also given an extension to 24th February 2021

    • Nigel W says:

oooooh interesting, one to do via live chat on Monday.

  • DT says:

ATM limit on bendy seems to now be £1000/day, did this not used to be a monthly limit? I never bothered withdrawing cash at £200/month, anyone know if £1000 in a day would actually go through with creative underlying?

    • Lumma says:

The original rule was £200 a month with no fees, anything above would have 2% added on, although most people didn’t get charged as long as they weren’t going crazy with this.

Everyone seems to have been put up to the maximum limits according to posts over the last couple of days, but not sure if it’s a mistake or glitch

    • @mkcol says:

With Creation/IHG underlying you are limited to £700/week cash/cash-like transactions.

      • Mike says:

Is it £200/month for HSBC without getting hit by fees?

      • Vit says:

hmmm, I actually looked this up last night and the website says £500 a week rather than £700. See below and ref. (https://myaccount.creation.co.uk/info/faq.html)

Can I use my card to withdraw cash?
Yes. If you have a cash limit displayed on Your Statement page, then you are able to withdraw cash from any cash machine displaying either the LINK or Mastercard logos (up to £250 for Storecards and £300 for Mastercards per day or £500 per week, up to your available cash credit limit). There will be a Cash Handling Fee of 5% or £5 (whichever is greater) for doing so. The cash machine may also charge you a fee for cash withdrawal. A Cash balance may be subject to a higher APR than other transactions on your account and interest will be payable from the date of the transaction.

        • @mkcol says:

Interesting. £700 is what I was told on the phone 2 days ago when I called to ask why none of my IHG/Creation cash transactions were going through.

      • Genghis says:

Not actual cash withdrawal using Curve, ironically.

        • TGLoyalty says:

Exactly. to make things complicated the £700 pw cash like transaction limit doesn’t mean you will be charged interest!

  • James says:

I’m off to Antigua next weekend, however this morning I’ve woken to Virgin cancelling the return on 14th December. Next available flight is the 16th. Are they responsible for paying for 2 nights food and accommodation? Officially they also haven’t told me yet. If I wait till Tuesday then am I also eligible for EC261 as it’s less than 14 days or does that start from when they change the schedule rather than inform me?
    Any help or advice appreciated

    • Andrew says:

I think the EC261 compensation element remains suspended due to “extraordinary circumstances” but duty of care remains which might mean in this case putting you up in an airport hotel and giving you meals whilst you wait for that return flight, or offering a full refund.

      • Jonathan says:

Virgin Atlantic are already heavily cash strapped as it is, even without EC261 compensation, we’d all like to see them be able to fight through the coronavirus pandemic and keep flying

    • Anna says:

They need to move you to the flight on the 16th (I’m assuming that’s your preference) and pay for your expenses incurred (accommodation and food, but not alcohol IIRC). No compo as extraordinary circumstances. Hope they don’t cancel your outbound now!

      • TGLoyalty says:

Or they can find you an alternative flight on the 14th.

        • Jonathan says:

A quick look on a flight tracking app shows little very few flights leaving their airports (this is for today) nearly all of them going to the US, and the others are places I don’t think I’ve heard of before, so unless you’re allowed to connect via the US, don’t get too hopeful about finding a flight to London when you originally intended to fly back

          • Bryan says:

I’d suggest fighting the extraordinary circumstances if Virgin were flying to other locations on the days in question. Its all or nothing in my opinion and the government has NOT said they can’t fly.

      • Jonathan says:

@Bryan, the extraordinary circumstances defence still applies to commercial decisions around flight cancellations. Passenger flights were never banned even at the peak of restrictions. You won’t get compensation until the EU come out & say enough is enough (which won’t be till next Spring at best).

  • Rob mc says:

Has anyone been to Dubai recently and had the PCR test on arrival? If so, how long did it take to get tested and how quick did the results come through? Live in London but to save £150+ to do a pre-test seems a better option.

    • tom1 says:

I’ve seen a few reports saying a few hours.
Rob commented the other day about going for one on arrival is the risk (albeit minimal) of testing positive, and being forced to spend the holiday in a Dubai government ‘hotel’.

      • Rob says:

This is only if flying Emirates remember. BA wants to see a test result at Heathrow.

        • Slon says:

Are we saying that BA mandates a negative test result prior to departing from the UK? DXB and FCDO sites both suggest that a pre-departure test is optional, and UK arrivals can choose to have one in the airport. Not limiting to Emirates flyers only.

          • Rob says:

BA was insisting on seeing a test. No idea what it is doing at the moment. The terminal switch may also cause issues as it will no longer be co-located with Emirates.

        • aristeides says:

This is strange because BA links to the .gov travel advice website for UAE which clearly says “Individuals travelling from the UK to Dubai now have the option to undertake a PCR test on arrival at Dubai airport.”

Since BA website says “Each passenger is responsible for checking and conforming with the entry and exit requirements at their arrival and return destinations”, surely they must allow boarding on this basis?

However, I have seen no evidence that they do, and much to say they are still asking for proof of negative result. 🤔

          • Rob mc says:

Just spoke to them and went through on the phone together what it states on the gov.uk website and confirmed that I won’t need a test before leaving and can do it on arrival in Dubai. But to make sure I monitor the gov.uk website

  • meta says:

Don’t think it’s been mentioned before, but hotels.com has become Voldemort payout partner.

    • Lady London says:

thought they’d always been there with very few absences, and iirc squid as well

      • Genghis says:

As earning partner, yes, not seen them before as payout partner.

        • meta says:

Yes, this is for payout. I’m a bit reluctant at the moment as I’d like to know if there is any expiry on the issued voucher.

  • Vin says:

Assuming Galleries North at T5 is still open, anyone know if the showers are available to use ? Thanks in advance 🙂

    • TGLoyalty says:

They were closed last time I went through. I doubt they’ve opened during lockdown 2.0.
