The HfP chat thread – Wednesday 25th November

Links on Head for Points may pay us an affiliate commission. A list of partners is here.

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

HFP-Wordmark-Black

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/11/25/the-hfp-chat-thread-wednesday-25th-november/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

  • Matt says:

I’m sure this has been answered before, so sorry: are there any interest or charges from paying Amex using Curve backed by MBNA?

  • Christopher Ingold says:

Does anyone have data points for the date that LBG sends customer data to the credit reference agencies each month?

    • 747_Brat says:

I recently switched to Lloyds Current Account. The account was added to my credit file on 18th of next month.

    • Andrew says:

      Which brand?

BoS Current Accounts & Visa Card – Never
      Halifax Current Account 19th
      Lloyds Current Account 18th

(My First Direct accounts also do not appear on any Credit Agency site)

      • The real John says:

Have you had the non-appearing accounts for a very long time (20+ years) before reporting was included in T&Cs?

    • The Urbanite says:

I find it’s your account balance round about the 9th of each month, but only if there is a balance.

If you had a £10k balance reported the previous month then completely clear it, LBG won’t report that in my experience so I recommend having a balance of at least £1 at any one time.

      • Charlieface says:

Most banks work like this. If you don’t hit their monthly date it’s not reported

  • Marc says:

Have people received partial refunds (or partial FTVs?) from the recent(ish) 50% off sale?
We cancelled an existing booking for an FTV, then rebooked at 50% off back on Oct 7th. The agent on the phone did say that it’d take a while for the remainder of the FTV to be credited back but not sure if 7 weeks+ is normal so anyone else’s experience would be appreciated.

    • GT says:

We did exactly this back in Oct. The residual value of the FTV was in my inbox in the form of an eVoucher within 24hr.

    • Paul says:

Also booked on 7th Oct (for JNB in March), Avios re-credited and charged again on 4th Nov, wrong amount, no 50% discount applied, but not chased that yet, and an email confirming a new e-voucher for difference in ‘taxes’ arrived on 18th Nov. The ‘new’ FTV has the amount it’s worth tacked on to the end of the code, /125XXXXXXXXXX/GBP79.
      Hope that helps…

    • PK says:

I did receive the refund in cash for two bookings. For one booking refund didn’t take long as they need to reticket quickly and for the other maybe it took 5 weeks.
It depends on your travel date for the refund , I believe it’s not before January.

  • James says:

Should be a simple question, but can’t figure this out!
If I book a BA return to Europe now, say LHR-MAD-LHR, then want to alter just the return flight (date change or cancel) under the ‘Book with confidence’ policy, what happens?
Do I have to reprice the whole flight for a change? Or to cancel, is there any way to just drop the return?

    • Rob says:

Cash ticket? It would trigger a reprice.

      • James says:

        Yes, cash.
Often slightly cheaper to book as a return rather than one-ways, plus can use the 20% at the moment!
But I may well want to change the return date closer to the trip. So that would require a reprice of the whole return flight? What happens if you want to change it after flying the outbound? Be useful to know so I can compare against buying as one-ways.

  • Jack says:

Does anyone have any suggestions as to hotels that do wfh packages in Esher/Kingston? I want something similar to the Marriott package with parking, 6am check in and 6pm check out along with an overnight stay. This is for the week after next, the Marriott at Heathrow is a bit far away for my needs.

    • Polly says:

Ring the managers at the the Ship hotel and Oatland’s park hotel in Weybridge. They could be very flexible. At least l know they were before times with people we know a while back.

  • Gormlesstraveller says:

There is a revolutionary competition for setting up a regular crypto purchase. My only interest in that is the potential MS opportunities but does crypto still cause red flags at mainstream banks in terms of ML?

    • memesweeper says:

      absolutely 100% yes
using revolut as a ‘buffer’ would probably mean the regular banks would never know

    • The real John says:

You don’t really hold the crypto with revolut. It’s like buying a swap managed by revolut

  • George K says:

FYI: St Ermin’s hotel – which promoted a £120 anniversary rate throughout the rest of the year – will now shut shop and plans to reopen on the 3rd of January.

    • Andrew says:

That sounds like what my brother and I paid each for our parents to have 3 nights DBB including rail travel on a “Stakis Superbreak” to the St Ermins for their anniversary in the 90s.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Bankside (£125 a night) also closed until January.

      • memesweeper says:

yup, just had my cancellations through 🙁

        • TGLoyalty says:

Put a spanner in my plans going to hold off to see if there are any Black Friday deals.

        • Tom says:

Hmm have a booking for 28 Dec, not showing as cancelled yet… crossing fingers!

          • TGLoyalty says:

Unfortunately they probably just haven’t got round to canning it. The email said they won’t be open until jan.

      • Michael C says:

Yiiikes was literally going to book a family double-room tomorrow a.m.!

  • Liam says:

Reuters is reporting that the US government is considering lifting the ban on non-US citizens arriving from the UK and Europe.

    • Anna says:

Interesting but I’m not sure I would actually want to go just yet!

      • Polly says:

Thinking the same. We have SEA booked for March, trusting Biden would win, and they might now get c19 under better control. But still looking doubtful. It’s a big birthday for the OH, so still hopeful. On a 241 in F so even better value in that avios sale. ..
At least we get to see our kids for Christmas…

      • Jonathan says:

It’s when the UK government give the country the green light to travel there, given how bad coronavirus is for them, it almost certainly won’t be anytime soon, maybe not until 2022
