Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Wednesday 25th November

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/11/25/the-hfp-chat-thread-wednesday-25th-november/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Rob, Rhys, or any with information
A couple of questions regarding Dubrovnik
    1) I’m looking to stay at Hilton Imperial Dubrovnik for 5 nights
possibly using points (and 5 for 4) if it’s doable ? anyone any idea how many Hilton points I’ll need (i do have 3 Hotels.com vouchers around £200/£250 each, i can pay extra)
    2) Also looking to stay at Sun Gardens Hotel Dubrovnik (with grandkids) 6 of us in total Sun Gardens, i believe belonged to a chain but moved couple years ago
Looking for best way to book it ?
Rob is it one Emyr covers ? or even Hilton Imperial Dubrovnik ?
Yes i could ring him, but as this is a Holiday for July/August 2022 unless we need to cancel our USA trip Aug 21 (then it will be brought forward to replace it
So i don’t want to ring him unnecessary, just yet
Yes planning 2022 lol already got 2023 planned for Sorento (our usual place)
    Thank you all in anticipation

    • Algor says:

Hilton hotels open up to 1 year in advance, sometimes properties could move reservation a bit further but I would be very surprised if any would accept 2022 booking.

    • Number9 says:

Just go on Hilton site choose pay with points and do the math for how many points you need.
Email him that’s what agents are for, he will soon tell you if he can book it or not.

    • TripRep says:

In terms of how many points you’ll need for Hilton Dubrovnik….

Why not do some dummy bookings for 2021 around the dates you’re interested in?

  • InfrastructureDebt says:

I need me some dark mode Rob 😎🙂

  • BSI1978 says:

    Morning all,

Chat with BA earlier this week, and they mentioned they thought I should be able to cancel/amend an Avios booking online as BA had reinstated this option.

Has anyone else come this yet? Think it only relates to cash bookings which Rob/Rhys flagged last week?

    • Anna says:

I think this is only if BA has cancelled the flight at the moment. It’s scandalous that they haven’t been taken to task for dragging their heels so much over this.

  • Berneslai says:

I’m about to book an internal US domestic flight with United for August 2021. Are there any hidden perks/offers that are not obvious at first glance?

I know about the Bonvoy status match for Titanium Elites (I’m platinum). Is there anything else?

  • TripRep says:

I see VS are market pricing redemptions, some UC dates have increased in the points needed,

    • tom1 says:

yes -seen a few examples too. Although my first suspicion was rather IT than market pricing.
I have seen a few VS redemptions that still show at full points price instead of the discounted 50% rate. I wondered whether it was where old redemptions had been cancelled and then returned to inventory, but at the original price instead of the discounted rates.

I think there’s also some correlation with seat spy too – the seats at the higher price that I saw in VS website weren’t showing in seatspy.

      • Pierre says:

I wonder if you are looking at dates where the ‘direct’ redemptions on Virgin flights are no longer available? In which case, you are seeing redemption options with partners, which are not part of the sale.

        • Tom1 says:

That was also my thought – but when I checked on VS site these were genuine direct vs flights.

  • James says:

20% off BA flights (all cabins except First) with discount off full flight cost.

    Code: BASPECIAL

    • Louise K says:

Is this the BF ‘sale’ do you think ?

    • Andrew says:

And presumably like all % airline sales it’s off the base fare – so people wanting to book economy will be disappointed that their discount is just a few quid.

    • YC says:

I can’t seem to get the promo code box to work if one way to the UK. Do these codes only work if departing UK? Also, does this have a minimum spend like the monzo?

  • Nigel W says:

A random question, what are readers experiences/views of the Amex Corporate Cards? I tried to apply one for my Director/the company for the business charge cards but got rejected due to the ‘company turnover’ and so Amex are suggesting we go down the corporate card route.

    • Rob says:

I had one in my banking days. I believe you can agree a lower fee if you refuse MR points.

    • Sina says:

Cards are tiered, green, gold, platinum, green is very basic with option of earning MR points, gold can have the same option plus loungeclub, and platinum comes with priority pass. No offers on corporate cards. Its very customizable based on what you need for your employees. Even the liability for payment can be company, employee or joint!

  • Craig says:

Does anyone know how to transfer 2FA for Award Wallet to a new phone?

    • Genghis says:

I think you need to use the long recovery key to then set up 2FA again.

      • Craig says:

Thanks, I still have the old phone. Looks like as you say I have to disable and reenable!

    • Brad Flack says:

Use Authy when you set it up again – that way you can transfer to your new device without any problem in future.
