The HfP chat thread – Tuesday 17th November

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

HFP-Wordmark-Black

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/11/17/the-hfp-chat-thread-tuesday-17th-november/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Have Virgin Wines quietly been dropped as a FC spending partner? :/

  • tom H says:

Just noticed amex MR to hilton transfer bonus
25% Bonus Points. 2 MR = 5 Hilton Honors points
    any one else spotted this?

    • Ali M says:

thanks for this – will transfer today

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

I have been wondering when we could expect to see some transfer offers. Not surprising Hilton is first as Amex just pre-bought a load of them for a big discount.

Hoping for BA some time soon!

    • Rob says:

      Thank you!

    • dezbez says:

I think the advisor said the offer runs up until 15 Dec (don’t quote me on this, though!)

  • MD says:

Has anyone had any recent joy with retention offers when ringing to cancel the BAPP? Extra avios on spend or suchlike?

  • Tical says:

How do you know if a BA flight is cancelled? No notification buyer but no tickets for sale (cash or otherwise) within a week of the travel date (mid-Dec)? Thanks

    • ChrisC says:

you get an email or notification in the app – have you checked in MMB?

Not just the first part but deeper into the booking by clickign in the ‘manage my booking’ line under the bookign reference.

  • Peter K says:

Thanks for the help with curve support. Sent the message again but spilt it into two separate messages, one short and one long.
Got no confirmation of receipt for the long one, just the short. Had a reply within 3hrs to the original message from 7 days ago.

This makes me wonder if curve struggle to recognise long support messages.

    • The Savage Squirrel says:

Now you say it, that would very much match and make sense of my recent Curve CS experience!

      • Peter K says:

Thanks for the reply. I’ll keep my messages short in future, or if necessary follow up a long one with a short one.

I swear Lufthansa has hired same inscript writers that work for British Airways for many years. Today Lufthansa emailed me that following passengers’ desires for personalisation, Lufthansa catering is changing to Buy on Board.

  • Chuffer says:

Has anyone had difficulty registering Virgin Atlantic account with AMEX? Trying to transfer MR and although done it in the past with other cards never with current one. I have a 10 digit account so should not need prefix but keeps looping and asking for a new account when I try to put the number in?

    • Rob says:

Odd. I added an Amex card last week without issues.

    • Peter K says:

It’s a known issue. You need to contact CS. For some reason you can’t link a Virgin points account to a MR card if it’s been done in the past with a previous MR card.

      • 747_Brat says:

I had the same issue. I had to call CS and they added it for me. Now it works fine!

  • Andy says:

I have friends traveling to TFS in December from LHR. Tenerife have now put in place you need a negitive COVID cert done no later than 72 hours of entry. I see there is a company doing them from T5 but think they only do them for travel to Hong Kong.
Anyone know if they’ve extended it for other countries? Been getting quotes for other places but seems as though £225 is the going rate.

    • Andy says:

      Meant 72 hours before entry.

    • Paul says:

Just check what type of test needed..

We used Midland Health in Birmingham which did the correct ones for Barbados (nasopharyngeal swab and oreopharyngeal swab with PCR analysis at an ISO/UKAS accredited lab) next day results was £195 and same day results £295..

    • fivebobbill says:

Andy I’m just back from Tenerife, what you say is not strictly correct, yes you need a negative test, but not at airport arrivals. The Gov have put the onus on the hotels to require you to be Covid negative before they can accommodate you, therefore you need to produce your test result THERE at check in (which you can pay for there and then). However, when I left Tenerife on Saturday our hotel were offering FREE tests to all hotel guests.
Only problem with arriving without an already completed test, is that if you then test positive on site you are well Donald Ducked!

      • fivebobbill says:

Just to add, those hotels that I know weren’t offering a test for free were offering one for around 30 euro, it’s a few hours turnaround.

Oh and one more thing, give the “Lookie Lookie” people a very wide berth, one of them pinched my mobile phone…!

      • Michael C says:

The rule changes (to what Andy says) next Monday.

      • Harry T says:

        @fivebobbill
Which hotel was that? I’m considering Tenerife over Christmas and NY.

        • fivebobbill says:

Coral Suites & Spa Harry, ain’t the RC but very clean, lovely pool, & central, and an All Inc option… Sorry I missed you btw 👍

          • Harry T says:

            @fivebobbill
Yeah, shame we missed each other! Sounds like a great hotel if it’s offering free tests, IMO. I should probably email the RC and see what they are doing about covid tests!

      • Lady London says:

…in which case is offering free tests a smart move by the hotels?

    • Pete says:

There is also testing via the Sofitel at LHR.
