The HfP chat thread – Sunday 1st November

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/11/01/the-hfp-chat-thread-sunday-1st-november/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Still no sign of the £100 Amex Harrods offer for me. I wonder if it will be available to everyone… It’s a pity as my Amex Marriott £400 is paying for Monday and Tuesday in London.

    • Baji Nahid says:

Its coming on Monday. Be patient

      • Murray says:

How do you know that Baji? Wondering if I should contact Amex and ask.

        • Andrew says:

I did and they said yes it’s for all. But best to double check for yourself – they record their calls so then you have verbal contract should there be any issues down the line.

        • Bobby Builder says:

Looking at the Amex business cards it says ‘You will not be eligible for any Welcome Bonus award if you currently hold or have held any Membership Rewards enrolled American Express Card in the past three months.’ So does this mean i could get 4 business cards a year and get the bonuses. I thought it was every six months so perhaps this is a change?

          • Rob says:

It IS six months. You should NEVER google these rules because you get hidden versions of the Amex site which are not actually public. Always go to the website direct and pull up the busines card info.

    • KBuffett says:

I’ve received the mailing in the post. Had I not, and I was staying in London on Monday like you, I would still spend the £100 and take it up with Amex later if it didn’t credit.

      • KBuffett says:

Happy to send you my mailing of you need ‘proof’ (without the envelope that has my address printed)

      • Jason says:

Looking to rebook a cancelled off peak avios booking and take advantage of the book any date option even if no availability exist. Are you able just to add the extra miles if you wish to fly at a peak time or are you limited to off peak only? Thanks

      • Dave says:

        That would be handy!

Amex on the phone told me all cardholders were eligible, on chat they knew nothing about it

    • Andrew says:

Well many of us didn’t get the £400 Marriott offer so if you’re not able to get your £100 of free stuff from Harrods when you’re there having your free stay, you’ll survive. But like everyone keeps saying – it doesn’t start until Monday!! There’s a picture of the letter on the deals website which is hot, so you can just use that as proof that you were sent it.

  • Tom1 says:

8 months (?) later, and I’m *still* training Morrisons staff how to redeem gift cards at their petrol stations. Any one else?!

    • KBuffett says:

I ran out of gift cards months ago. Is there a current method to purchase discounted cards? Also, how do they work for fuel?

      • mark2 says:

Morrison’s and Tesco gift cards work in their own petrol stations (although the staff may not know this).

        • Josh says:

Tesco as well? Didn’t know that. Although on the back it says can’t be used for fuel I think.

    • MattB says:

We never managed to spend any of them on petrol, gave up trying after the 2nd awkward encounter and just used on food.

    • Connor says:

Same here, although I think most of them have managed to learn now. Always a bit embarrassing when they’re insistent on telling you they don’t take them, and I have to go “yes you do, look on your screen for the option”.

  • KBuffett says:

Does anyone wear brands other than Hanro, Sunspel or Zimmerli? I’m interested in trying out challenger brands.

  • Rachel says:

I thought I’d provide an update on the *£1 Golden Ticket I purchased last year in Virgin Atlantic’s Golden Ticket game Cyber Monday game.

I bought a Manchester-Barbados return for £175 with the original dates in June 2020. This of course was cancelled. I rebooked for late November 2020 (the latest that Virgin would allow without having to pay a fare difference.)

Thinking that the restrictions for arrival in Barbados were too stringent to make the trip worthwhile, I contacted Virgin last week to cancel.

They said I could rebook the trip up until the end of March 2021 without having to pay a fare difference. They also offered the choice of an Upgrade Voucher, a Companion Voucher or a Clubhouse invitation, valid for 24 months.

So I decided not to cancel, I opted for the upgrade voucher, which I think is probably worth the £175 I paid to begin with. I had said this about November, but hopefully I’ll be able to travel in March. I’ll probably have bigger problems to think about if I’m unable to use the voucher in the 2 years before it expires.

  • DZOO says:

Has anyone (London based) undertaken a PCR test for travel recently and have any recommendations? There seem to be a lot of options out there. TIA

    • Magic Mike says:

Not Citydoc, unless the trustpilot reviews have improved significantly in the past couple of weeks…

    • rk says:

A friend has used the pharmacy on Curzon St – 24 hours for result – £150, said he was happy with it.

      • DZOO says:

        Thanks all

        • Lady London says:

Calida, although would not call a challenger

exofficio and terramar for slightly techier fabrics in the US

          And there’s always Banana Republic!

          • Lady London says:

above for KBuffett although I might not have got the type of clothing correcf

  • Ben says:

Hi. Was wondering has anyone started churning Virgin cards every 6 months and is it doable. Would people say it is worth it?

    • Travel Strong says:

I’ve cancelled and signed up again a couple of times and with bigger gaps than 6m – I got refused every time and had to appeal every application – and my credit limit is currently half of my original limit.

Credit limit is important with virgin as they only pay points up to your limit amount each month.

In hindsight I would have had more miles now if I had kept the free card with double the limit, even after signup bonuses and 1.5 earning rate!

      • Travel Strong says:

If however, you are not going to max out and are only spening 1k per month anyway – your maths will work out differently and you may see more value in churning. Just be aware of the low credit limits they are handing out now.

  • Rob says:

Why don’t you wait until the offer actually starts? Amex NEVER puts offers online before they start.

    • Andrew says:

Except for Shop Small which is always available to save to card ahead of the start date. But yes, otherwise, never.

      • Rob says:

Shop Small is a centrally organised Amex offer. The ‘one retailer’ offers never appear in advance, as well you know.

    • Chas says:

Er – I recall they did a couple of months ago (it might have been the double points on platinum offer spend offer?). It was added to my account about a week or 10 days before going live. I nearly made the mistake of pushing some spend through too early….

  • Anna says:

For emergency service workers like my OH out there, I’m happy to report that the blue light code for 20% off Laithwaite’s wines is still active. Just got 25 bottles (2 cases plus a free bottle of sauvignon blanc worth £10.49, apparently) for £134.

    • Andrew says:

Hope you stacked it with the current 20% Lloyds, BoS and Halifax fund return offer *and* the in-store 10% card offer with Airtime.

    • Jody says:

There are some great offers with blue light card. I use it all the time for a variety of things!
