The HfP chat thread – Thursday 29th October

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/10/29/the-hfp-chat-thread-thursday-29th-october/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

any quick ways to stop Radisson points expiring in 2 days ? there are only 11,000. can you book a cheap room and cancel ? in which case does anyone know where there is a category 1 hotel ! thanks

    • Kai says:

“We are extending our pause on the expiration of Radisson Rewards points. Any points that were set to expire between March 1, 2020 and March 30, 2021 will now expire on March 31, 2021, if the account remains inactive.”

Bravo to BA – I’ve always tried to go for Virgin over BA when I’ve had a choice between the two on any route, but despite the initial hiccups BA is doing things the right way now. Customer service are extremely helpful and efficient with rebooking options, and I’m receiving refunds in a matter of days, whereas with Virgin I’ve had to wait 3+ months in once instance and still waiting in another…pretty sure if I’ve got a similar choice to make in the future, BA will get my business (as long as it’s not a flight with 7/8 wide CW)

    • Andrew says:

There’s plenty of us going through the legal or mediation routes with BA.

Which is unfortunate, but I can only speak from my own experience. Maybe it’s because I’m a FF, maybe because I’ve got a lot of miles with them, but in every interaction I’ve had in the past 6 months and the tens of flights I’ve had to reschedule or request refunds for, the people who have assisted me have been extremely helpful. With Virgin maybe they try, but the last message ends up being “it may take up to 120 days”

  • Travel Strong says:

Refunds for a cancelled virgin flight have landed exactly 80 days after requesting.

They stated they would be holding the money for up to 80 days, and sure enough they did.

However the payment was in 3 parts on 3 cards (due to paid upgrades)… refunds to the 2 Amex cards went through fine … 1wk later and I’m still waiting for the refund to appear on the Virgin Money card. Looks like Virgin Atlantic are not the only Virgin company to be taking free loan of customers cash!

Any recommendations for a large cottage that can sleep 8? Looking for options for a 3 night staycation in early December. Ideally within a 3-4 hour drive from London. With kids in tow, don’t want to risk public areas at a hotel, so will prefer a good cottage in the country. I can’t seem to find high end luxurious cottages for 3 nights or less.

Re the $100 food and drink credit when staying at Marriott, can certain % gratuity (added by restaurant) be paid by it too or is that always separate from the food and drink paid by the voucher? I’m assuming the voucher amount will be deducted at check out and not by the restaurant at the time.

  • Optimus Prime says:

Tesco spend £40 and get £5 back – does it work with cumulative spend?

  • Peter K says:

Has anyone had the 5k bonus IHG points for using the IHG premium card at checkout, but with curve as the fronting card?

    • stevenhp1987 says:

The offer doesn’t start until 1st Nov so no-one would have had the points yet.

I wouldn’t expect it to work via Curve though as IHG wouldn’t be the merchant.

  • Diydegsy says:

Onefinestay spend £200 get £200 back on BA Amex until 31/12

    • Charlieface says:

Yeah been talked about. Apparently you can split over multiple cards.
I had a look but nothing in the UK outside of London. Maybe I’ll go for Italy.
