The HfP chat thread – Thursday 29th October

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

HFP-Wordmark-Black

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/10/29/the-hfp-chat-thread-thursday-29th-october/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Hello does Hilton Honors Barclaycard allow you to repay mid month and then earn more points or is points earning capped at credit limit like virgin card? Ta

    • Jane says:

Doesn’t seem to be an issue, even after the statement is generated payment just reduces direct debit amount. Haven’t noticed a cap on points.

    • Anne says:

Never been a problem for me, and thanks to an annoyingly low credit limit I tend to repay a couple of times each month.

    • The Savage Squirrel says:

Yep no problem with this; the problem with this card (that someone pointed out yesterday) points normally credit on 23-25th of the month, but last month’s points do not seem to have credited? Is this the same for all?

      • Anne says:

No sign of mine yet – just grateful not to be waiting on them for anything specific right now!

        • Jane says:

still no points here either, also re Hilton, it it just me or is Award Wallet not picking up properly and always returning an error message.

          • mark2 says:

            October points not received yet.
With AwardWallet have to do Captcha every time and click on login button.

          • RussellH says:

I do not understand how / why Award Wallet works the way it does.
The issue with the Captcha arises with Firefox, and presumably other browsers that work with an Award Wallet extention.
But if you use Pale Moon, which does not have a suitable extension, Award Wallet works fine.
However, for Tesco you have to have the extention…

And no, no points yet here either. Last month was more of a wait than usual, this month even worse.

          • Rob says:

Use the AW phone app. Does away with extension issues.

      • Ali M says:

        same here.weird

      • Crafty says:

        Yes. Anyone called up yet?

      • The Urbanite says:

Those putting over £50k through got the manual points credited earlier than usual this month. But the <99,999 sweep still hasn't happened.

  • S879 says:

If you enter the London congestion charge zone at say at 2pm, stay overnight and return the next afternoon say 4pm, do you have to pay congestion charge for 2 days? Is it due daily or any 24 hours (for example 2pm to 2pm). I’m wondering if the late check out is even worth it if I have to pay an extra £15 on top of parking and the original £15 congestion charge fly Day 1.

    • Jonathan says:

It’s a daily charge so in your example 2 days would be needed. You may also have to factor in the ultra low emission daily charge depending on the age of your vehicle.

      • Harold R says:

Yes my wife is a nurse and when working a Saturday night there used to be no charge as weekend now the zone is empty public transport options scarce on a Sunday morning yet it would cost £30 to drive in for one shift as charge is payable on way into and out of work completely crazy a 9 – 5 job mid week would only cost £15 when trains are plentiful and congestion rampant.

        • Lady London says:

this kind of thing, and small plumbers and the like not being able to do jobs in Central London without getting fleeced, is why I began to get seriously fleeced off with Sadiq Khan.

While useless MP’s and other assorted fat cats can float around in Central London and not have to pay…. or people’s employers on expenses just ill us instead.

London is no longer democratic. It’s a playground for fat cats.

          • Callum says:

Except, of course, Khan was democratically elected and is still enormously more popular than his nearest opponent…

What exactly has changed to make London not only less democratic, but supposedly undemocratic?

          • Lady London says:

I write too many long posts anyway Callum and don’t want to add another one.
Also try not to get me started if you ever see me at an HfP party… I can download on this for hours.

          • callum says:

What a coincidence – I also have irrefutable proof that London is the most democratic place on the planet, but I don’t want to write a long post.

        • Alan says:

My wife has to drive into London 5 days a week. The CC made getting an EV a no brainer. She could have got a Renault Zoe for less than the monthly cost of the CC but got a bit carried away and bought a Tesla.

          • Lady London says:

jealous. the time will come, when they’ve got enough people on the hook, when the EV concession will be removed.

What’s the feedback on the Tesla? how long is it meamtvto last? are there any issues with charging/battery?

A garage in France told me the Zoe is not that amazing, very small etc, so your wife prob made a good decision on that

          • Rhys says:

That’s ok. EVs are already beginning to achieve cost parity over their lifetimes, early data from Tesla cars suggests that there is no significant battery degradation. Once initial costs come down even further (which they will – look at the sinking costs of Lithium Ion batteries in the past decade) they will be cheaper to run and more reliable. By 2025 I imagine the vast majority of new cars will be electric.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Each actual day not 24hr period and now 7 days a week from 7-10pm every day excluding Xmas day. It used to be no charge between Xmas and NY

      • AJA says:

I used to drive into central London on a Sunday to go for dim sum in Chinatown and do a bit of shopping in Oxford St and quite often used to drive in on a weeknight after 6pm to go to the theatre or the opera but since lockdown and now the introduction of the 7 days a week congestion charge until 10pm that has ground to a halt. I do hope they don’t extend the zone out to the north and south circular as that will be a real PITA. Ghengis Khan is an idiot if he agrees to that. He was lucky to benefit from the postponed election. Also if the zone is extended then what’s stopping people driving into the current zone since you will already have paid your £15?

        • Rob says:

Saddiq would have walked it in 2020 and will talk it in 2021. You should be more concerned about the ULEZ extension from October 2021 which will effectively ban all old cars from the central area.

          • chabuddy geezy says:

The extension of the congestion charge hours was imposed on TFL by central government as a condition of the bailout. Funny that the national rail franchises all got a bailout with no strings attached…

          • Kevin C says:

We’re going electric cos of ULEZ. We have an e-niro on order.
Benefit in kind for electric cars is 0% right now.
+one that congestion charge extensions have been imposed.

          • Lady London says:

It actually bans then from the area as far out as the North Circular Rob. The ULEZ zone is much bigger.

          • Lady London says:

            @Chabuddy what bailout?
Are you talking about the bankers again?

Are you saying that ordinary people are once again suffering because the bwankers nearly sunk us all and got away scot free with all of us all paying for it?

Fully aware lots and lots of Rob’s readership are in the bwanking profession, btw

          • Jack says:

Not a fan of Sadiq at all but hell would freeze over before I vote for a Tory! Sad we don’t have a decent Lib Dem candidate.

          • callum says:

Lady London – They very clearly stated what bailout they were talking about – the rail franchises, which very obviously had absolutely nothing to do with bankers. £100m of which was then given to shareholders instead of being used to operate services.

With you specifically blaming Khan for extending congestion charging when it was forced upon him by central government in exchange for a crucial TFL bailout (which was also well publicised at the time), it looks like you’re letting your political beliefs take precedence over your otherwise rational mind…

  • Michael says:

I used the current Church’s shoes offer on Amex twice on Tuesday (in-store). Once on my BAPP and the other on my supp Gold on my wife’s account. Both accounts had the offer saved on them. Immediately after the transactions were processed I received two emails saying I had redeemed the offer but on both cards the offers show as expiring in two days rather than being recently redeemed. Should I be worried?

    • Andrew says:

Will be absolutely fine – just wait a few days and the credits will show.

      • KBuffett says:

        Does this work at Bicester?

        • Nick_G says:

Bicester is an outlet store, and as per the T&C’s of the card, outlet stores are excluded.

          • KBuffett says:

I noticed that. The reality is sometimes something else though. Just wondering if anyone had tried it.

  • J says:

Eurowings refund processed without any argument this week and quickly credited after they changed my flight. Eurowings’ parent Lufthansa previously seemed to have the worst reputation for refunds so very happy about this.

    • Alan says:

It was well deserved after waiting 3 months for Lufthansa to refund two bookings, I had to make a section 75 claim to get the money back.

  • Matty says:

I contacted Curve via email on Monday of this week about a transaction. I’ve not heard anything – not even an auto-generated acknowledgment.

    Anybody else experiencing anything similar?

    • Michael says:

I messaged them a few days ago to ask about having my card limit increased. I’ve not heard a peep which is unusual for Curve as they’ve always been excellent at responding to my queries.

      • Matt says:

Yes, a bit unusual. I contacted them on the 20th and had a reply on the 22nd, which is in line with my previous experience. I’m Metal. Not sure if that makes a difference…

        • Matty says:

I’m Metal. I upgraded earlier in the month. I usually receive an acknowledgement email within an hour or two, a human response within a day and a resolution within a few days.

          • The Savage Squirrel says:

Yes, slow customer responses at the moment for me too (have just resubmitted a query not answered for 72 hours).

    • BP says:

They have frozen my card and I’ve been waiting over a week for a response. Unfortunately I forgot my email address used for curve and created a new account at one point while trying to identify which email I used. The fact I have multiple accounts was noticed and they asked what one I want to keep.

    • SteveSauceman says:

I’ve had the exact same issue, waited 3/4 days for any response and finally just messaged them on Twitter. After sending a Twitter message you’ll get a pretty speedy reply to your email (within ~1 hour)

    • Connor says:

Took them 5 days to answer when someone tried to use my card to spend £250 on a German makeup website. Quite annoying, and then another 2 days to issue a replacement card.

  • Save East Coast Rewards says:

Odd situation: hotel without digital key so I needed to go to the desk (but I did check-in online in the afternoon). I arrived at the hotel 1am. It was a two night stay and when I checked out my invoice said check in 19 October 01:13, check out 20 October 15:21 which represented the times I checked in and out at the desk.

This has now appeared on my Hilton account as 1 night (doubled to two), the only reason I noticed it was because I thought I didn’t get my double nights bonus but it turns out I got one night doubled to two rather than two doubled to four.

I queried this and got a reply back saying I only get the points on the nights I stayed, so as I checked in the next day I only get one night. But surely that can’t be right, my invoice has two nights stays and I had breakfast twice. I’ve arrived at hotels after midnight before but they’ve either had digital key or have printed out the paperwork and prepared the key in advance so have shown me as checking in earlier than I arrived.

    • TGLoyalty says:

It’s not right. They’ve probably done their night audit early or incorrectly.

Who did you query with the hotel or Hilton? I would reintegrate that you booked 2 nights and stayed 2 nights therefore you should receive 4 nights.

May even be worth using the Twitter team or flyertalk lurker rather than standard email support.

    • Phil says:

I would be minded to then ask if I can be refunded the money I paid for the night that I apparently did not stay.

      • S says:

I have exact same issue. Paid for 2 nights because I wanted to check-in at 7am and they told me its correct that only 1 night be credited. I have asked if I should only book 1 night in the future when I want to check in at 7am…

        • Rob says:

Hotel systems cut off at midnight. It is not unusual to not get credit without a fight if you arrive after midnight.

          • Fred says:

On that basis, should we assume Hilton’s own “online checkin” facility is not what it says?

          • Rob says:

OLCI may do it. I once got Marriott points and credit for a stay I couldn’t make because I did OLCI. This doesn’t usually work however although it my case it was silly not to try.

          • DB2020 says:

Also experienced this issue at Hyatt hotels. They refused to credit the missing nights because I arrived at 1 AM. Explanation was that it is an IT limitation and nothing that they could do.

      • Lady London says:

I like that idea! go for it.

    • Lady London says:

The hotel would have billed you for a no show for your first night so request a manual intervention from Hilton and dont take no for an answer.

      • Lady London says:

Thinking about it, this could be grounds for a complaint to the ASA for false advertising.

    • Mike says:

I regularly turn up at Hiltons after midnight (tend to book them in London when I’m staying out drinking after last train time). I learned years ago that it’s worth calling the front desk in advance to advise them you are arriving after midnight, lest they cancel your booking then try and charge a no-show fee.

I’ve never had issues with nights not crediting though. I also book day rooms sometimes, they don’t involve an overnight at all yet I still always get a night’s stay credit…

  • Bill says:

I’ve been wondering what i can do with the forthcoming Amex Platinum Harrods offer that was wrote about a few days ago. I was going to get a tablet for my wife but they don’t sell them online. I’m unable to visit the store. Do they sell them over the phone ?

    • Louise K says:

I’m not sure about electronics but last year I bought a Moncler coat over the phone from the store and they couriered it to me.

    • Alex M says:

Or you could buy gc online and use it in store when you can (gc did trigger bonus for me couple years ago).

    • TGLoyalty says:

The do sell things over the phone and will ship them to you

I’m not sure if that includes electronics.

    • Andrew says:

Worth giving the store a call and asking to speak to that department. My contact at Fendi calls me when the sale is about to start – we go through what’s available, I pay over the phone and they are sent out to me. You can earn and redeem reward points over the phone but not redeem a gift card. If you are gold or above you get free delivery when spending £250, otherwise I think it’s about a fiver.
