The HfP chat thread – Wednesday 28th October

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/10/28/the-hfp-chat-thread-wednesday-28th-october/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

A bit of a strange one but my Arsenal season ticket will soon be a Barclaycard and I’ll be able to earn loyalty points redeemable with Arsenal partners such as Emirates.. can’t wait to add this one to my Curve! https://www.arsenal.com/news/arsenal-launch-loyalty-reward-scheme

Hi Rob, I stayed one night at the Westbury Mayfair to use the Amex £400 credit. Booked via Emyr. The transaction is showing as the Polo Bar at the Westbury Hotel in my Amex account. The hotel says only Amex card holders have the issue. Would that be a problem for getting the cash back offer?

      • Rob says:

If that is what all check-outs are treated as, then you’re fine as that will be the code that Amex is looking for. It is only a problem if, for some weird reason, you were checked out in the bar and not at the front desk!

        • Charles says:

I checked in at the front desk and I am going to check out at the front desk as well. I have had a chat with Amex customer service. They have no idea.
Have any other HFP readers experienced this before?

          • Dubs says:

Hi Charles, I had the same issue at the Westbury, checked out on Sunday. I have had the Amex credit added to my account this morning. As a pending item shows as polo bar westbury, but eventually when charged on account shows as 3cpayment westbury Hotel Ltd. So you should be fine.

          • Dubs says:

P.s. booked via Emyr as well.

Air Nz have followed Qantas by blocking AwardWallet and requiring a sms code to be entered. Say the account ‘scraping’ breaks their t&c and is a security risk. Any workarounds? Others likely to follow?

    • BuildTheWall says:

Hope other airlines follow suit. It’s a data security nightmare with these tools.

Marriott have just updated their cancellation policies for non-flexible rates this week. I phoned last night to try to cancel or move a non-flex rate today thinking I was chancing it but agent highlighted policy change and refunded no problem.

Nothing more on status just yet – they did extend by a year and give everyone a pile of free nights didn’t they?

Morning all, question about the spend £500 on VA Reward+ card with Virgin Atlantic for a free upgrade voucher. I’ve made the qualifying spend on a flight I don’t intend to take (was planning on taking VAs equivalent of FTV; “Open Ticket”, VA have now changed my flight times such that I qualify for a refund. Question is will they claw back the upgrade voucher if I accept the refund?

    Grateful for any help/suggestions provided.

  • Leafwarbler says:

I have a 2-4-1 booking made on 21st Feb 2020 for flights to Accra on 26th January 2021. The companion voucher expires in November 21. The trip is being postponed by 12 months.

I don’t think I’m eligible for a future travel voucher, but would my 241 be extended by 6 months? Or do I sit tight in case BA move the 10th January deadline again?

Sorry, I hope that makes sense – my head’s spinning at the moment!

    • AJA says:

I think you’re correct that you don’t qualify for a FTV. As for the 2-4-1 is the Nov21 date the original expiry or is that already extended? Check your BAEC account, you may find it was already extended by 6 months, BA/Amex automatically extended vouchers by 6 months a while ago, even ones that had been utilised.

      • Leafwarbler says:

Thanks for the response, AJA – Nov 21 was the original expiry date, but I can’t see it in my BAEC account….

  • Mzungu says:

    I’m sure I’ve asked a similar question before but…
I have about 16k of Capital on Tap points, the plan was always to convert them to Avios, until this year happened! However, I don’t have any real use for the other rewards that CoT offer, so I’ll probably still use them for Avios at some point.
Would ‘you’ convert them now, or hold them in CoT?
I guess what I’m saying is – is it there more risk of losing them in CoT or Avios?!

    • Peter K says:

CoT offer cash as an opt-out. Surely that is of use to you?
Personally I’d keep them in CoT until needed just in case you need a cash injection at some point.

    • The Savage Squirrel says:

COT transfers to Avios are impressively instant, so no harm in leaving them in COT until you need them if there’s even a small possibility that the cash option might be useful.

    • Mzungu says:

Thanks for the comments – yes, cash is always an option of course, but that’s not why I collect points 🙂
There doesn’t seem to be any opinion one way or the other whether the points are ‘safer’ in CoT or Avios, so I guess I’m going to stick a finger in the air!

  • Alex W says:

Shocking revelation: Nectar points still worth 1p each.

    • Andrew says:

      Yay.

So pre-order your vouchers now, then spend between 11th and 17th November inclusive.

      • Jane says:

not done this for a while – am I correct in remembering that you can use the voucher in any of the categories now where as it used to be get wine voucher only spend it on wine etc.

        • Rob says:

          Yes

        • ChrisC says:

Remember these vouchers can only be used to buy specific wine – the Taste the Difference range.

The list of in and ex clusions are on the nectar website.

I remember last year only generating the voucher on the app when I had the bottles in my basket!

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

Oooo, intriguing. Could be worth £150 for me…

    • Charlieface says:

Does refunding a bought item still work?
