The HfP chat thread – Wednesday 28th October

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/10/28/the-hfp-chat-thread-wednesday-28th-october/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Morning, quick card use query. Currently use the following route- Ernie, bendy, holiday inn, Hong Kong without any fees etc want to integrate Hilton, does anyone have experience of using via bendy to purchase PB without cash advance fees? Also does it allow to be repaid with a credit card like holiday inn cc? Thanks

    • Crafty says:

      Yes; no

      • gareth says:

        Ta

        • Fm says:

Anyone have any issues using Hong Kong to pay holiday Inn? I was under the impression this was frowned upon by Hong Kong and not advisable- happy to be corrected

          • gareth says:

Done for a few months- no comments yet. I’ve requested a limit increase today which is referred so I may have accidentally triggered someone to review my prem card.

Email from Hilton late light night confirms elite status has been automatically extended (again) until end of March 2022!

    • S879 says:

Yes, so happy with Hilton. Marriott, on the other hand, are looking to be stingy with extending travel packages. I do have a booking for December but I doubt we’d be able to travel abroad and the expiry is 31st January 2021. Hopefully they will renew but from the talk on FT, it seems not for travel packages with an original expiry before 2020.

      They really are the best…

“Keep Your Status & Benefits through March 31, 2022
All Elite members will now keep their current Status through March 31, 2022, even those who were scheduled to downgrade in 2021. That means more time to continue enjoying the benefits you love.”

Is JW Grovenor London serving breakfast as room service or in a restaurant? I think the Park Tower is doing that. Anything nice to do with two almost-teenager kids? I want to use the £400 offer but don’t want to just stay in the room.

    • Pierre says:

The JW Grosvenor breakfast is in a restaurant (and a nice one at that) – we were there this past weekend, the breakfast was great!

      • S879 says:

Great, thanks. Did you park via the hotel? I think it’s £41 or find a way to park cheaper? Considering Friday night stay. I know no way around £15 congestion charge.

  • Kumar says:

BA website for Covid -19 requirements to enter UAE(Dubai) and the FCO website has not been updated for the last 2-3 days.I do have a holiday booked for mid December and tracking changes on a daily basis . Emirates website has been updated 2 days ago as covid test can be taken upon landing for UK and Germany departures without the need to take the test before the flight.
This would save the expensive test in UK and also the time to travel to the clinic(not keen on at home tests). There has been an article on Telegraph yesterday about the same change .Would BA let me board the flight without a covid test based on newspaper article or Emirates website.

  • Andrew Mc says:

Morning all. Friend needs to travel at short notice back home to Uganda. Managed to secure flight from EDI via AMS, departing 0500 Monday.

    Entry requirement:
“Travelers must take a certified PCR COVID-19 test no more than 72 before departure for Ugandaand obtain a negative result. Tests must have been done by a health facility that is accredited by the government of the country in which the test is conducted.”

    Friend lives near Inverness.

Is this even achievable? Your collective wisdom is appreciated. TIA.

Try Aberdeen for tests, they are ramped up doing them for offshore Oil industry

    • Vit says:

      Try https://www.tachealthcaregroup.com/

TAC have a test centre set up at Aker Solutions building (near Aberdeen airport). I believe it’s 200 GBP per test with result returned same day. Last time I was booked through my employer before joining a vessel. Tested at 12 noon, results back around 5pm-ish.

Does anyone know an email for The Langley in Iver. Need to email some requests. I can only see phone numbers for Marriott hotels whereas Hilton usually have an email too. I like to have written confirmation as opposed to speaking and them agreeing on the phone.

    • Rhys says:

You’re late to the party – this was discussed here the other day!

      • Andrew says:

Yes it all got very heated and political on Monday – let’s not open that can of worms again!

    • The Savage Squirrel says:

Yes, huge news in Aus for days, according to contacts there.
While the apparent attempted murder of a baby (if the report is accurate) is appalling, Qatar deserve every bit of outrage heaped on them for what was basically state-mandated sexual assault – one which was clearly unnecessary (note to the apologists: you don’t need the level of invasive search described to determine whether someone has just given birth).

      • Lady London says:

@Savage Squirrel I have been quite rude in my comments on this elsewhere. but I think you just summed it up expertly (and I have gathered this is close to your field of work). It is, indeed, state-sponsored sexual assault and by its selectiveness will reveal itself.
I love QR J, have flown it a few times now and would automatically choose QR for any long haul, but think I have stopped now. I am just not prepared to take the risk of doing even a transit in Doha.

  • A270 says:

Sorry posted this on yesterday’s chat by mistake so reposting.
Turned on my Tesco to Virgin autoconvert today. Am I too late to get the 1k bonus?
