Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Tuesday 13th October

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

HFP-Wordmark-Black

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/10/13/the-hfp-chat-thread-tuesday-13th-october/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Nectar are doing their doubling up vouchers again in November. If you are amex points rich it may be worth transferring some points over as it’ll work out equivalent 1%. Not planning on flying anytime soon so a good way to cash out on wine

    • Lee says:

Do you have to use it in store only?

    • the_real_a says:

Wasn’t it quite limited last year both in amount and categories?

      • Freddy says:

In-store only and there are certain categories but covers taste the difference wine, clothing, toys, electricals and entertainment up to £100. My wife also has a nectar card so we’ll double up to use £200

    • Doogie says:

Instore only and they’ve excluded Scotland (& Wales) from redeeming for TtD wine this year 🙁

  • Martha says:

Hi. I have overspent on one on my cards. It is pending but has gone through. I am not able to make a payment but it will take me over my limit. What should I do? Will this get me in any trouble etc?

    • Martha says:

      amex cards

      • Chris Heyes says:

Marttha, nice phone call ask for Brighton, explain that due to “Covid”
you have temporary got a problem (all banks have signed up to be helpful) see what they come up with
i suspect they will help as a one off, but keep it simple

    • Harry T says:

I would call Amex and explain.

    • the_real_a says:

You can make a faster payments transfer via your bank account using your card number as the reference. If done same day your account will not go delinquent.

      • Martha says:

Been on chat with amex. They said the following. “I do see that your account went overlimit, however you do not need to worry at all. It will not have any impact as long as we receive the payment within the due date when your next statement generates. The best part is we also do not charge any over limit fee..” but it was only a little over

What is the best number to call BA to avail the 50% long haul offer. Been very busy at work so can only call late night.

    • Darren says:

Online bookings were working this afternoon. Calls are redirected to 0800727800. Others may have better info.

      • s879 says:

Thank you but not getting through. If I cancel a 2 for 1 online, do I get my voucher in my account straight away? I know I loose £35 per person. Are the taxes refunded back to card? Ideally I wanted to call and change but I think I have left it too late. I still want to book at half price online. Will the Avios come back to account straight away?

        • Darren says:

I’ve always called to cancel if I needed a quick return, which works out ok. It may not be immediate if you do it online.

  • Ronald Jeremy says:

Dilemma, tonight’s dinner, should it be a quick chicken stir fry washed down with a cheeky glass or two of rose, or a well marinated steak accompanied by a substantial red?

  • James says:

Why has the BA reward sale been deleted from HFP?? It’s still on until tonight isn’t it??

    • BJ says:

Perhaps you’re a bit late to the party?
…but better late than never 🙂

      • Rob says:

It’s not been deleted – we pinned the article for a few days but bigger news has overtaken it. The ad has gone because BA stopped paying for it!

  • s879 says:

If I cancel an Amex 2 for 1 booking online, is the voucher back in my account straight away as well as the Avios? Not worried about the expiry of voucher. I cant get through to BA so trying to go for half price online.

    • s879 says:

Has it ended as on the website it says book before 13th October?

    • Jonathan says:

You can’t cancel it online at the moment, only request an FTV which you then have to call to use. I think you’ve now missed the boat as UK Call centre now closed. You could try USA but will be a potentially long & expensive hold.

      • s879 says:

Thank you. It is showing me an option to cancel but no idea what it will give back so will hold off.

        • Jonathan says:

If you click cancel it will ask if you have all passengers permission then take you to the page where you request a Future Travel Voucher.

          • s879 says:

I don’t mind having that in this situation but will it return the 2for1 Amex voucher to my account and the Avios straight away?

          • TGLoyalty says:

Your Avios and 2-4-1 won’t be returned and instead the FTV is a voucher worth the amount of Avios, the fees paid and 2-4-1 used to book.

  • Dave says:

How likely do you guys think it is that there will be another Avios sale like this?

I really wasn’t ready to book any trip before June 2021 given the uncertainty at the moment. Had no idea where I would even want to fly to at the moment. Or who I would want to use my companion voucher with, haha! But if this is the only 50% I ever experience I’m really gonna feel like I threw away a lot of points here.

    • Rob says:

Hard to tell. When I saw Avios last week they were over the moon by the response (and actually a little bemused by the level of bookings to countries where you can’t visit at present). British Airways will have raised a few million of free loans and will pocket a lot of cancellation fees later.

It wouldn’t surprise me to see a re-run in a few months but nothing is certain. BA would like to be able to tell the City that its flights are getting fuller and this is one way of driving up loads.

      • TGLoyalty says:

They’ll be pleased by the bookings driven by it but they’ll be even more pleased with the interest free cash generated that might even net them £35 in fees when the traveller can’t actually enter the country they’ve booked.

  • s879 says:

Phew! Managed to book 4 x CW to Atlanta over Easter using 2 x Amex vouchers. Thank you to those who helped. I really appreciate it.

In case someone is looking for Seychelles CW, we just cancelled ours so if anyone wants to bag those in Easter holidays, I hope they return to the system and get bagged by a fellow HfPer.
