Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Tuesday 13th October

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/10/13/the-hfp-chat-thread-tuesday-13th-october/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Just realised one of my Amex 241 voucher has been extended again for a further 6 months. Voucher was originally issued May 2018 and was redeemed and subsequently reissued when my USA fights were cancelled in April. Original expiry was May 2020 (2 years) then this was extended until November 2020 – and to be honest it was looking likely I would lose it. But today it now shows as extended again until May 2021. NB. My other 241 voucher issued March 2019 still has an expiry of September 2021 having only so far been extended once by 6 months).

I have to be honest I’ve been very tempted with the recent 50% promotion on Avios long haul bookings but I suspect it may be some time yet before so I am able and / or willing to travel to the USA again. I imagine further comparable offers will follow.

  • Jack says:

Just booked a night at Turnberry using the Marriott Bonvoy £400 Amex platinum offer, overnight stay with dinner, breakfast and 2 Espa treatments fantastic thank you for the heads up 👍

  • The real John says:

Trying to book the half price avios tickets but it keeps going to “Sorry it didn’t work” after the Amex safekey, anyone else having trouble? Trying to include an infant.

Might try booking just the adults and calling to add infant later if that is possible? Guess I can demand a phone fee waiver

    • Stu N says:

Not working for me either on straightforward 2-4-1. Tried several times last night and again just now.

    • Damo says:

Same for me last night and this morning. Phoned B.A last night and the CSA stated they were aware of the problem as they had been called by a few customers. He told me it was too busy for me to be put through to book them over the phone. No wonder the company is in trouble!

    • Darren says:

Same for me, no joy online.

  • Stu N says:

Amex Plat – £100 back from Selfridges and spend £150/ £30 back offers stack, I’ve had the credits today. Add 8 Avios/ £ from you-know-where and they are actually paying me to take stuff off their hands.

  • Anna says:

I’ve got the spend £1k, get 5k bonus points by 31/12 on gold Amex. Do the bonus points post when you hit the spend or after the specified date?

    • TGLoyalty says:

Usually once the transaction that takes you to £1k hits your MR account

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

      Is that after ringing them?

Yes they *should* post after you hit it. Doesn’t always work tho but Amex will add it if you ring them.

  • AndyGWP says:

It’s Prime day(s), (day 1 of 2), so in the absence of Shoestring, top up £100 at Amazon, get a free £10 (Prime members only)

  • Tudway says:

Are there issues with Eurostar issuing eVouchers? I requested on July 15th for a late July journey and have heard nothing since the email confirming my request.

  • Rob says:

Does anybody have any experience getting a refund on a HOTELS.COM/CLUBCARD booking?

Hotel was cancelled but being given conflicting messages from both sides.

I used £130 of Tesco vouchers so it would be nice to get these back…

    • Rob says:

The rules say you lose your vouchers even if hotel is shut.

However Tesco has been reinstating vouchers as a goodwill gesture. Don’t expect anything if hotel is open though.

      • TGLoyalty says:

        How’s that even make sense?

The hotel is shut how can you be offered anything but a refund or a rebooking.

        • Rob says:

          I’m arguing with both sides.

I’m guessing I will have more luck with Tesco. I spend regularly in their shop.

          • blenz101 says:

If you are Silver or Gold with hotels.com then make sure you call them on the line that you are a member of.

On the Gold/Silver lines one of the benefits of being silver or above is the hassle free guarantee. They will usually let you move around even a non-refundable booking. I don’t think either party is going to give you a refund but the ability to shift a booking into the future may at least save the trip.

As Rob said, it is really clear in the terms this is very much a one way transaction and single use discount code. Presumably hotels.com will be paying the hotel so that could be a third option to try once they are contactable.

            Also, travel insurance?

        • Charlieface says:

Because you paid with a voucher so they write the rules. Although the contract with the hotel probably means they would have to give you something equivalent
