The HfP chat thread – Tuesday 13th October

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/10/13/the-hfp-chat-thread-tuesday-13th-october/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Marriott related (sorry for the question as I have never booked one of these rates before.)

If I book a rate that includes a 50 GBP hotel credit daily but I don’t eat at the restaurant or incur any other incidental, will this still be applied to the final bill meaning my room rate will be £50 less than advertised?

  • mark says:

Just bagged club suites A350 Tokyo-Lhr for 3 pax in May for 112k Avios and £70 in taxes, Fab if it opens up in time.

  • Fred S says:

Any informed or, rather, considered opinions about which countries will come on/off the quarantine exemption list on Thursday?

    • J says:

Would not surprise me if Germany comes off the exemption list based on the recent sharp increase in cases (even if from a low-ish starting point and less than NL, UK, FR, ES, etc)

    • Anna says:

At this point I’m just hoping I can still travel out of my borough by then 🤦‍♀️

  • Tom says:

Virgin Atlantic vouchers, is it possible for me to use one of my Virgin 2-4-1s for my Mum and Dad (me not travelling) either by giving the voucher to them or booking for them? My Mum has 200,000 points but no voucher… Same registered household address if that makes a difference.

    • BLT says:

From my understanding the 241 has to include the person who earned it. I’m not sure if you can use the upgrade for someone else?

    • dezbez says:

Whilst there is generally a lot of flexibility with Virgin, I’m not sure they’d be able to accommodate this type of request. All you can do is ring and ask though – queues are 1hr+ during the day, but I called the other day after 9pm and got through in 20 mins (closes at 10.00)

  • Kevin says:

Does anyone know if there was any other phone no. apart from 0344 49 33349 to call avios for flight booking using lloyds voucher?

Currently the website shown phone no. disconnected automatically after the greeting.

    • Bigsi says:

I just got through on that number about an hour ago. Also kept cutting off but eventually got in the queue and was answered after maybe 15 minutes. I think they are really busy there as this is the last day to use 50% off Avios offer

  • Josh says:

Called Amex and asked about a retention bonus on my Amex Plat and because the annual fee will be charged on my next statement – I was given 35k points. I was given 15k a few months ago when calling – so 50k in total this year.

Didn’t see the marriott offer on my offers – so 35k makes up for that.

  • Anna says:

Interesting – I just checked on The George’s website re it’s opening date and it says there is now a Club Lounge! It sounds very nice indeed, I am going to email and ask how much it costs!

    • Anna says:

They are now charging £468 pn for a junior suite on the weekend we are staying so our £80 pn night upgrade feels like a real bargain!

      • Harry T says:

You’ve done well, I hope the experience is enjoyable. Do let us know how the club lounge is.

    • TGLoyalty says:

      I don’t think there’s a club lounge as such.

They offer the club intercontinental experience. Which is breakfast, afternoon tea and drinks/canapés in the printing press. I believe park lane is doing the same at the moment.

      • Anna says:

Still sounds good. Though it seems to be included for anyone in a superior or better room so it may be quite busy. Rates appear to have increased to reflect this!

        • TGLoyalty says:

Does sound very good. I was wondering why no rooms included it on the app. Perhaps updates haven’t made their way through.

Hopefully the no booze lockdown as finished by your stay

  • Aston100 says:

Am I being unrealistic, or does £24 per person for breakfast at a Crowne Plaza (Muscat / Oman) sound a bit pricey?
The Intercontinental in that city charges £28pp which I suppose is more plausible.

I’m going to be booking on points, so cannot add breakfast at a discounted rate.
Is Oman an expensive destination, or is the Crowne Plaza taking the mick, or am I out of touch?

    • Steve says:

Why is 28pp more plausible than 24pp?

    • TGLoyalty says:

      Oman is an expensive destination.

Best deal Bustan would give me was £24 each but also upgraded me to an ocean view in main building because I took it.

it was a large spread but on balance I should have paid the walk up rate a couple days and had room service the rest and I probably would have been at worst par for £ and room service would have been less hassle.

    • marcw says:

Oman is not a cheap place to visit. Beautiful country, but don’t expect it to be cheap.

      • Jonathan says:

I concur. Food & drink is expensive in general & especially in hotels. The IC isn’t the best whereas CP gets very good reviews so I’m not at all surprised by the small differential you’ve found.
