The HfP chat thread – Sunday 11th October

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

HFP-Wordmark-Black

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/10/11/the-hfp-chat-thread-sunday-11th-october/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Amazon Prime offers include an Echo Dot at £18.99. You have to order via your current Alexa to get that price. It shows £29.99 on your account but you get billed the lower price. The Heather grey will perfectly match my new bedroom lol.

    • James. says:

Probably looking to get rid of old stock before the new Echo Dot is released. Plus Prime day in 2 days

  • Ben says:

Based on one world website, BA lounge is closed at Edinburgh but you can access the No1 or Aspire lounge, can anyone confirm this is the case? Any recommendations for which one is best?

  • Mark says:

Does Marriot tend to charge my card as soon as I booked the cheapest rate? (i.e non-refundable blah blah, because my booking is 1st week Jan and the
policy ends 31st Dec). Wanting to take advantage of the Amex promo for £50 off with £200 spent but that ends 31 Dec as well.

    • ao40 says:

Sometimes, usually up to the individual hotel. I have successfully used prepay rates at both Marriott and Hilton to trigger Amex deals, but it is variable.

  • Matt says:

Are virgin Atlantic actually making USA flights at the moment, given that non-USA citizens are being denied entry (I think)?
Have flight booked for November with my little boy – don’t want to go, but still no sign of cancellation from Virgin. Don’t seem to have many options at moment, and only get taxes back if I cancel.

    • Anna says:

Insurance, as you would be travelling against FCO advice?

    • Nick_C says:

“at the moment” they certainly are! VS687 is winging its way to JFK right now, and has been operating every day.

Flight Radar 24 shows you which flights are operating.

  • JSlv says:

    Good morning all
Looking for suggestions for 2 nights in London at the end of the month using the Amex offers for IHG or Hilton.
    Enjoy your Sunday

    • Rob says:

Hilton Bankside is probably the best modern option. Park Lane is shockingly cheap for a flagship (but dated) and they are good for upgrades with status.

IHG – Kimpton Fitzroy is cool but base rooms are tiny. CP City has a strong following.

      • JSlv says:

Thanks Rob, will look at those.

      • Chrisasaurus says:

Also CP Kensington, firm favourite of mine

      • John says:

But crap due to Covid. Conrad is the only property providing something decent wrt lounges and breakfast substitute. Rates are extremely low, especially if you combine with Impressario which Emyr can sort out. Three nights should be about £120ish pn and you are billed direct.

    • Anna says:

I don’t think there are any IC Amex offers but the O2 IC has some good deals on rooms and suites with club access. It’s one of the few places where you can squeeze good value out of an Ambassador bogof certficate as well at the moment.

    • Tom H says:

if you have the marriot offer on your card, i just stayed at the renas St Pancreas as plat, and it was awesome, big upgrade to the grand staircase suite, free minibar, some free drinks and snacks in the bar, awesome. Compared to my stay at the fitzroy a couple of weeks ago as spire amb, which i put on flyertalk. Fitzroy is beautiful but the service/covid cutbacks really detracted from the stay

  • Spk says:

Does a supplementary card (Amex) get effectively the same credit limit initially? I know it’s a subset of the primary card holder’s limit, but can it be managed online?
Have to say Amex credit dept works in mysterious ways. Wife got approved for Gold with double my limit even though she earns less. And double what she had on her Marriott card.

    • Genghis says:

A supp doesn’t have its own credit limit. The only limit is that of the primary card holder.

My wife generally gets higher Amex limits than me even though I earn substantially more since I have more credit cards than her.

      • Anna says:

Women must be seen as a better risk! I have nearly twice the credit limit on my BAPP as my OH even though his salary is 3 times my pension.

  • Chris Heyes says:

How inconvenient and annoying, i booked our flights to Denver Aug 2021, returning Phoenix- London
Booked seats to Denver no problem 3 of us we have free seat selection.
Phoenix to London couldn’t book seats comes up as error contact a BA Representative so i did three times 1st one said can’t book until nearer time bull. 2nd one said no-one can book seats for that flight yet bull. 3rd one said has i hadn’t been issued my confirmation email yet (although it’s in manage my booking) i would need to wait until it was sent out and could be a while as they are only doing early flights he noticed seats were now being books now for the flight but said they must have booked flight online
    3rd one sounds feasible ?
but he said there was nothing he could do.
So i told him i would need to revoke my right to all 3 of us sitting next to each other regardless of seats one disabled each side of the non-disabled
Not only may it be annoying for us but even more so for somebody who has paid to reserve a seat who his then forced to move to accommodate us
    All this easily avoided

    • Clive says:

I have an Avios ticket booked about 3-4 months ago which although “booked” is not ticketed so cannot reserve seats. Chased them and the same story that they will eventually get around to it.

    • Lady London says:

Difficulty booking seats even when others have booked can mean a pending equipment change or flight possibly going to be cancelled. I wouldnt have thought Phoenix was a major route. Keep an eye on it.

      • Chris Heyes says:

Hi LL Phoenix flight is 31st Aug 2021
This as happened once before passenger refused to budge (don’t blame him after all he’d paid for his seat lol)
after a long heated discussion between him and BA crew (not us)
we was separated, but crew noted down we told them they was breaking the rules they had signed up to.
(a disabled passenger has a “Right to be seated next to a traveling companion) even if other passengers have to move
we received compensation eventually for them not complying

        • Doug M says:

Almost every time I’ve seen a seat argument the underlying cause is those wishing to sit together want to move to the better pair rather than just sit together. Not suggesting that’s you, just pointing out my experience.

          • Chris Heyes says:

Doug M the disabled passenger has the right to be seated next to a traveling companion (a BA crew problem to sort out)
should normally be easy to sort with all travelers having free seat selection (unless the disabled person does’t know their rights or forgets to book seats
To Meta no FTV involved booked with a 241 and Avios

      • meta says:

This is a new issue, especially if the booking involves FTV. This then goes to manual ticketing and this is done in order. You could not be ticketed at all for the flight if not careful and have to sort it out at the airport.

  • Mark Attwood says:

Gatwick North; is there any lounge I can prebook with Priority Pass or Lounge Club? Having no success with Number One Lounge on line; seems to be no longer accepting Priority Pass.

    • Rob says:

It’s not. Neither is My Lounge (same owners).

Your only option IIRC is Club Aspire which doesn’t take prebookings.
