The HfP chat thread – Sunday 11th October

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

HFP-Wordmark-Black

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/10/11/the-hfp-chat-thread-sunday-11th-october/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Has anyone managed to pay hsbc cc with Revolut? How do I do it? Only get option to pay with my hsbc current account when I try

    • Gareth says:

Don’t think you can/ only method of payment is bill payment from a current account

    • Genghis says:

No. Got my Rev account temporarily blocked after trying to make a FP and got a telling off.

    • The Urbanite says:

As a general rule, methods of payment are shown on credit card statements. Certainly HSBC statements provide information on paying by bank transfer or direct debit which are available options.

Revolut are known for asking people to stop if you’re topping up with a credit card to pay off a credit card, especially if doing so more than once a month.

  • Bob says:

Have a long haul Avios redemption next month for which I had purchased a POUG. Called BA and was categorically advised I’ll get everything back that I paid if I cancel (less £35) but will take 6 weeks as needs to be done manually. Booked pre March so not eligible for FTV. Any experience / advice for this? Thanks

    • Andrew says:

      What’s a POUG?

    • Genghis says:

You’ve an option to cancel until t-24h. BA may cancel the flight between now and then, then you’ll get everything back (no £35 cancellation charge).

      • Bob says:

Many thanks. I was under the impression that the poug may be non refundable but appears not the case. Looks unlikely that BA will cancel as they’re increasing frequency over this month (ICN).

        • TGLoyalty says:

I would get it in writing as others have been mentioning there was no refund in this scenario. Which I think is ridiculous.

          • Doug M says:

Would any company really offer a written confirmation of anything? I just can’t see BA actually coming through with written confirmation.

          • TGLoyalty says:

Exactly therefore I’d rather take the word of those that have been refused refunds and the upgrades are considered “fees”

          • Lady London says:

+1. Until there’s a court judgment that sorts BA out.

          • Doug M says:

BA do their best to avoid any sort of court that would set legal precedent.

          • Lady London says:

This is why if I ever have to sue them I wont be accepting settlement. Unfortunately small claims/MCOL judgment doesnt set precedent has to be a higher court to create precedent.

As BA normally aeem to attach a gagging agreement to any settlement as well, so as to make it clear to the court why I’m not taking a reasonable aettlement (which could be vuewed by court as unrreasonable, I am likely ti quote public interest as reason for proceeding as anything BA does to me they probably do to very large numbers of other people too.

          • Charlieface says:

@LL, apparently small claims court takes a dim view of winning side not willing to take a settlement, and may decide against in such cases.

          • Lady London says:

@Charlieface that was my point, which is why I stated public interest as that is a valid reason to decline settlement – precisely to avoid this problem.

  • KBufett says:

I’ve got five Selfridges and Harvey Nicols Amex Offers available (Spend £150 get £30 back)

Can anyone recommend what I could possibly use these on, considering I can’t think of anything we need. Perhaps like NetFlix vouchers or something I could liquidate at close to the full value?

    Thanks in advance

    • Andrew says:

Neither Selfridges or Harvey Nics sell third party gift cards. Selfridges sell Apple products so you could buy an iPhone and sell on eBay for close to RRP.

      • Josh says:

You’d need to have a very high risk threshold to sell an iphone on ebay unless it was cash on collection.

    • Anna says:

What about Xmas presents? Both do posh foodstuffs if you have relatives who like that kind of thing. If you know someone who likes Jo Malone, that stuff is never normally discounted and would make a lovely gift. Annoyingly I have none of these offers on my gold card, where I have got 5k points if I send £1k, but they are on both our BAPPS!

      • Andrew says:

If you’re a Nespresso user then Selfridges have a concession – you actually need to buy a Selfridges gift card and then use that at Nespresso as they use a different till system but if you have a gift card they will take you to a Selfridges till to pay (same is the case with Louis Vuitton at Selfridges)

    • Louise K says:

They have a pretty good extensive booze section if you are prone to a drink or two.

I use mine to stock up on sun cream, perfume/aftershave etc. jo Malone is always a good buy too with the discount.

      • KBuffett says:

Thanks All, some good suggestions. I may just buy gift cards for I store use and then use as and when required.

  • Andrew says:

Went to Bicester yesterday and made the most of the £40 Amex offer a few times and will claim the triple Avios now. To note: they tell you when you buy the gift card that it can’t be used in Prada, but it can. The gift card actually processes at all the shops as a MasterCard which makes me wonder if in theory it could be used elsewhere.

    • Nick says:

Hi Andrew a random question did you happen to notice how good prices/discounts are in the Jo Malone outlet there? I wonder if it would be better than using the Amex Harvey Nics discount of £30 off £150 spend. Thanks

      • Andrew says:

The Jo Malone outlet is extremely small, quite literally a shed, they have the same selection in the Cosmetics Company shop there (which is the shop for all the Estée Lauder brands). But it’s just all the seasonal fragrances – the summer ones in this instance – so it’s not the standard range if that’s what you’re after. Like all of Bicester it’s end of line stuff/last season (and at some stores like Prada and Ralph Lauren, made for outlet stuff).

      • Louise K says:

Last time I checked, there was approx 10% off Jo Malone products but a limited selection.

    • KBuffett says:

I used around 5 Bicester Amex offers on Monday across various cards. I received an email confirmation about the offer being successfully used from one card, but the credit is not showing on my account. None of the others are showing.
Does anyone else experience similar issues with offers?

I suspect it’s because I used a combination of Apple Pay (which I think is linked to the card number on my metal Amex Plat) and a physical plastic Amex Plat.

      • Andrew says:

I used it 3 times yesterday and got the confirmation emails instantly. But of course too soon to get the credits. Sometimes contactless payments don’t trigger the confirmation email but do trigger the offer once charge has cleared.

      • Sarah says:

I used the offer on Tuesday and it was credited to my Amex account on Thursday.

  • Rahaney says:

    Data Point:
Paying VA+ via Bendy (Metal) with Creation White underlying -> declined (tried both a small & larger amount)
Straight though seconds later with another MC card.

    • Rahaney says:

      Further Data Point:
Paying Amex via Bendy (Metal) with Creation underlying -> declined.
Straight through after with another MC.

      • Rahaney says:

Note: Creation within limits and not blocked (used it between data points for a purchase)

      • MDW says:

I pay the seagulls all the time with a bendy (metal). It seems to have a £250.00 max per transaction. So, I have to pay the seagulls over several transactions (IHG Black or White underlying)…

        • Spk says:

Same here. Works well with amounts less than 200. But didn’t work for HL

        • Ashish says:

Hi, does paying for metal increase curve spending limit?

          • Rahaney says:

No, it resets your limits back to the minimum/starting point and then you have to build it up again. They’ll look at your spending habits before each increase.

          • Peter K says:

It reduced mine from £300k to £1k !!!
I sent a message and they increased to £100k, so still not as good as before.

It did reset my spend to zero however.

COVID testing in Northwest for travel
Has anybody aware of any places doing PCR testing for travel in the Northwest since all the private clinics seem to be based in London and postal one seem to be 48+ hours at the least (with no guarantee) and some countries like the Seychelles require it be less than 48 hours before departure?

  • John says:

BA have changed my flight time by 1hr45min and informed me 10 days before the flight (shorthaul).

Am I entitled to a refund rather than a voucher?

    • TGLoyalty says:

Phone and ask if it’s no longer convenient

However, BA normally only allow it for 2hrs+

There’s no specific law that deals with the length of time a flight is moved by and the flight delay compensation is suspended at the moment.

      • John says:

CAA states airlines should inform at least 14 days in advance, I know for BA its 2hrs+ as a major change allowing refund just wondered if it being under 14 days made a difference. Not looking for compensation just a refund rather than voucher under the ‘Book with confidence’ terms..

        Will try calling tomorrow.

    • Doug M says:

BA it’s usually 2 hours for them to accept it’s a significant change and refund. Same flight number?

    • Sandgrounder says:

+1 results in 12hrs, 99 quid. Antibody test for 36 as well. I was negative, but still convinced I caught it early on 🙂

    • Lady London says:

If the flight number is different then that gives you the same choices as cancellation. Worth double checking if it’s changed.

  • MJ says:

Club Suite question… booked BA107 outbound, BA106 return for December… lots online showing that this is a solid A350 route so Club Suite, but website showing 777. Error or likely that BA have changed to 777 for Winter?
