The HfP chat thread – Friday 9th October

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/10/09/the-hfp-chat-thread-friday-9th-october/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Does Creation charge fees for paying off balance on Virgin credit card? Thank you

    • stevenhp1987 says:

      No, nor do Virgin

      • YC says:

and both for you dont even need to use bendy?

        • stevenhp1987 says:

Correct. Read the accepted cards list on the Creation payment screen.

      • Alex says:

Never heard of this way to manufacture spend. Do many do this I am wondering and does this apply to both free and Virgin Reward+ cards?

    • Rhys says:

On the same note, does anyone know if Creation charges for depositing into Trading212?

      • Mr. AC says:

That is something I hope to learn this month. If done via Curve, no cash advance fees, but don’t know yet if there’s interest.
The MCC code for Trading212 was 6211 (at least in August) in case anyone knows how Creation treats that.

        • Rhys says:

You don’t need to go via Curve, though. Trading212 accepts visa/mastercard natively!

      • Jimbob says:

No charge, although I used Curve as an intermediary.
Main problem, is that 212 insists on sending funds back to the original card when you withdraw the funds, so no potential for manufactured spending

  • Nick says:

Finally managed to ticket 2 promo itineraries LHR-DOH-DPS-DOH-LHR, after spending 6 hours on Qatar’s website. It is bloody 4:30 am already. I am going to be a bit grumpy today!

Anyway, I paid £331.90 for 2 tickets, which were otherwise selling for £1,266.30. That’s a neat saving of £934.40. Not a bad deal, eh?

To be honest, Qatar’s teacher’s promo ain’t that bad! You just need to be patient and keep searching for W class fares for summer 2021. They are limited in numbers, but Qatar surely hasn’t pulled the plug on W fare class, as many people are suggesting.

    • Gareth says:

Issue I have with the Qatar ticket is that only the wife is a teacher so, from what I can work out. I have to book her ticket before they send me the 50% off code for the next one. So will be two separate ticket bookings plus we have a 5 week old so would need to book her on at same time with one of us to get bassinet seat but in all likelihood won’t get sat together.

      • Nick says:

@Gareth After you book all the tickets, you can call them to merge the tickets into one. I have done this in the past myself, and planning to do it again as the Missus and I are on separate tickets at the moment.

  • TheBadger says:

Does the MCC 6051 incur cash advance fees on mastercard?

    • Andrew (@andrewseftel) says:

Would be at the issuer’s discretion but it’s an explicit quasi-cash MCC so likely to be cash-bucketed by most issuers.

    • The Urbanite says:

It’s up to each individual card issuer which MCCs they charge cash advance fees for transacting with. There’s no blanket rule but I suspect you will be hit with a fee for 6051 transactions whichever card you use. You probably won’t get any rewards either and even if you do, the fee will make it uneconomical.

  • A270 says:

If I get my email too, is it best to book straight away? If I need to make a change, will there be change fees? We are a family of 4 of mine will be the free one, OH’s 50% and then I will need to pay for my children (14 and 12). Wondering if I should just book us for now instead of blocking my money. I doubt flights would get sold out. Does Qatar allow child booking via website?

  • BSI1978 says:

Rob/all, does anyone know which routes are slated to have Club Suite all things being equal next year? Seem to recall there might have been an initial story on the likely schedule some time ago….?

    • Harry T says:

Tokyo and Boston – I have bookings with CS on the Seat map. There’s a full list on flyertalk.

    • Pid says:

At least they one of the Dubai routes we day

    • Rhys says:

Looking at the summer 21 schedule at the moment, the following have A350s: TLV, DXB, MIA, IAD, PHL whilst ATL and DFW get 787-10s. There’s also the refurbished 777s but they’re harder to identify. I heard that they are trying to get a bunch of them on New York now that the 747s have gone.

      • Dan says:

Haneda also A350 in April 2021.

        • Rhys says:

Not as far as I can see on ITA Matrix!

          • Dan says:

It says A350 on my booking confirmation! There were two flights per day – one listed as A350, the other 777. I chose the 777 as the flight times were better but was pleasantly surprised when the booking and seat selection on MMB was A350/CS.

          • Nick says:

OAG will show exactly which routes/flights are scheduled with A350/787-10. BA submits weekly at the moment I think, so it should be up to date.

The new 777s are harder as Rhys says. The 77W deliveries are scheduled on JFK and MLE. I don’t know the 772 routes. JFK is likely (they’re trying to get all services CS for next year if they can), but the rest are dotted around the network based on schedule efficiency.

    • Anna says:

Our AUH flight in April is showing Club Suite for now.

  • thehornets says:

It looks like my (mid July) Virgin refund is finally on its way, but to a closed Amex gold card.

Does anyone know if I will see the refund appearin my online Amex account (I can still see the old gold card even though it’s closed) or do I just need to keep ringing Amex to see if it has arrived? Thank you!

  • Frankie says:

Hi all. I have used a BA Amex 2 for 1 + avios for two CW flights to MEX for January. The 2 for 1 is due to expire in September 2021 and that includes the extension. If I cancel the flight and get a FTV will the 2 for 1 that is included in the voucher be extended to the expiry date of the FTV? ALSO will I even be offered a free FTV as I booked the flight in February 2020. In which case if I have to pay to cancel I should just take the refund etc (as I wont be offered a FTV?)
BTW I have read through all of the 580 comments on the BA sale post from Wednesday before asking these questions so I’m not being lazy. One person HAD mentioned that they were told on the phone that the 2 for 1 included in the FTV will expire on it’s original (extended) expiry date so I do want to check. Someone else had said that FTVs are only offered for bookings made after March.
    Thanks in advance

    • Rob says:

Yes it will – with the FTV your travel must be completed by 30/4/22 though. This is NOT a booking deadline, it is ‘get home’ deadline.

    • AJA says:

I think Rob missed your point about your booking being done in February 2020. I don’t think you are eligible for a FTV unless BA cancels the flight or extends the date for cancelling in exchange for a FTV to the end of January 2021.

If you don’t want to travel your option is to cancel now for a full refund minus the £35 per passenger fee. It might be better to wait to see if BA do cancel the flight as you can still cancel 24 hours before for £35 per passenger unless you want to take advantage of the current 50% off Avios deal and rebook somewhere else.

If your plan is to extend the life of the 2-4-1 then you could cancel now for £70 and rebook a cheap RFS European deal and then cancel that in exchange for a FTV but bear in mind that when you do come to use it you will have to phone up to redeem the FTV.

if my daughter books me some reward flights (she lives in USA) we are in the UK, if flights get cancelled due to virus, would she get the points and money (taxes) back?
