The HfP chat thread – Sunday 4th October

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

HFP-Wordmark-Black

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/10/04/the-hfp-chat-thread-sunday-4th-october/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Not sure what’s wrong with the people at the Halifax surely the T&Cs should say c45hb4(k

  • Rich says:

Hi, just wondering if one of you experts can help me out today. I booked some flights last March before Covid internally in Australia and also cairns to Bali. I accepted a voucher at the time and rebooked it all for November. Since then quantas have changed the flight time and now said they will pay me a full refund. Jet star however have now cancelled the cairns to Bali flight and sent an email saying they cannot offer a full refund at this time and only offer a credit note as it’s circumstances out of there control. Is this not utter rubbish?
I thought I would post on here before I send an email. Many thanks in advance, rich

    • Doug M says:

How did you pay for the JetStar flights? Chargeback/S75 with credit card would seem an approach, flights cancelled failure to provide paid for service. Booked direct and not through Travel agent?

    • terri says:

This is a try on by jet star. Agoda gave me the same runaround with a closed hotel but no refund provided. If one party cannot perform obligations under a contract due to things beyond their control i informed agoda the contract is frustrated and i was due a refund. There are also eu distance selling regulations covering this situation. Agoda ignored me so i had to do a chargeback, which would be your option if no refund is forthcoming from jet star.lt,s a pfaff but its the way of getting money back.

    • Harry T says:

Jetstar owe you a refund. I had similar issues with Virgin Australia cancelling flights and not taking calls or answering emails. I just charged back on my Amex.

    • Diydegsy says:

I had flights booked With Interjet from Mexico City to Los Cabos that were cancelled and they only offered a voucher. I tried chargeback and Amex give it to me then took it back. Axa insurance told me they do not have to refund me as I was offered a voucher and when the voucher ran out and I hadn’t used it I could go back to them at that point and they would look at it. Ridiculous as all booked last year.

      • meta says:

I got a refund from Expedia for cancelled TAP flight in June. Expedia offered refund, but then issued a voucher. I saved my chat conversation with them offering refund. I then went to Amex and claimed S75. I claimed that Expedia agreed to refund, but more importantly sold me an invalid ticket and therefore have not performed their obligation under the contract. Amex accepted this and Expedia have not contested it.

        • DJ says:

Is S75 still valid when you book via a third-party? I know Amex is generally good at chargebacks, but this wouldn’t be the case for many other credit providers out there.

          • meta says:

If the flight is cancelled the third party actually sold you an invalid ticket, so S75 should apply. This is what I argued with Amex. Don’t have experience with other providers.

      • Lady London says:

Rubbish. dont put up with it. you will find nowhere in your insurance ts and cs that says you have to accept a voucher. refund=money refund.

Go back to Axa, make an appeal (escalate it) give them 14 days to review and confirm refund otherwise you will refer them to the Financial Ombudsman.

Even a referral to the Ombudsman usually costs the firm about £600 so this should prompt them to tske a serious look at it instead of trying to con you.

Amex travel insurance on Plat is going to become a serious embarrassment to them if this sort of weaselling out on the promised benefits of the American Express Platinum card start to get publicised. I strenuously avoid Axa on all
types of insurance becausr Axameans low quality, usually reduction in cover and poor terms.

Chargeback should have worked but it’s technically a voluntary scheme so go after the insurance co as you have a stick to beat them with.

    • The Savage Squirrel says:

My Australian relatives call them Deathstar. The Ryanair of the Southern Hemisphere … except with possibly even worse customer service. In their view, it’s worth paying a significant premium to avoid them.

  • Grimz says:

Anyone know the best number to call BA on for a cancelled flight on Avios 241? I just called the 0203 number and got cut off before the end of my options.

    • ChrisC says:

That’s basically the number to call.

You’ll just have to keep trying.

    • Lady London says:

press no buttons even if the ‘right’ option comes up and call as close to 0800 or 1900 as you can, ideally on a weekday.

    • AndyC says:

Try the BAEC Gold number (0800) 123 111. Never mind if you’re not Gold. They don’t ask and you can request transfer to the appropriate department/area. It worked for me, several times.

      • John says:

Please don’t publish this number on a public forum. Thank you.

        • Rob says:

If you Google it, it comes up immediately.

        • Hak says:

Why not? Ba are behaving terribly underhand so what are customers to do?

        • AndyC says:

John – the number has already been published (on this forum especially, as well as in others).

      • Mike P says:

That seems a rather underhand approach and not sure I’d be promoting it on an open forum.

      • Lady London says:

I got booted off a few times in the past as soon as it became clear I was no longer Gold

    • Pete says:

I’d recommend using the US number (+18777677970) via the Skype app. Calls to 0800 and 0877 US numbers are free via Skype. They’ve always answered even when the UK number has hung up on me.

  • Andrew M says:

No bonus points on transfers from HSBC to Avios again this month. The last HSBC to Avios bonus points promotion was during December 2019. I really thought we would have had another one before now

  • J Smith says:

If you have 2 Amex offers for the same retailer (e.g. Spend £100 get £5 back, and Spend £200 get £10 back) will they both work for one purchase of £200?

  • DK says:

What happens to the offers especially saved ones if you upgrade green to platinum?

    • memesweeper says:

Good question. I can’t be sure, but I think I remember when I did this before the offers persisted.

  • CTR says:

I’ve no idea if anyone has mentioned this small offer on Amazon…or if it’s even that relevant. If you do not have a MasterCard set as your default, they’ll give you £10 off your next purchase if you switch default card on your account to a MasterCard, I.e from an Amex to MasterCard, and pay with it. Got a £20 item for £10.

    • Andrew says:

They are targetting people, who have previously had the Mastercard offer to switch to Visa for a £5.
