The HfP chat thread – Thursday 1st October

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/10/01/the-hfp-chat-thread-thursday-1st-october/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Anyone recommend a decent 4 star hotel in Stockholm? BA has flights + 3 nights in the Hilton Slussen for £284 which seemed pretty good.

    • Jake Mc says:

At Six is really fun. Nice rooms, good breakfast + location and the listening lounge / bar is great! Book the tipsy tea if you can

      • mr_jetlag says:

+1 for At Six, their rooftop bar is probably the best night spot in town. Next door the Hobo Hotel is also great – buy their bathrobes to take home.

    • Tw33ty says:

Just north or Stockholm arlanda airport is upsalla, right in the centre and right next to the train station (which you can get from the airport), is a really nice radisson Blu.
The corner balcony rooms over looking the city are really nice.

    • Nigel says:

Another vote for At Six, my go to place to stay in Stockholm now.

Slussen is basically one huge construction site, so would avoid staying there.

Got an offer from MBNA for the horizon card 1% c@ashback for a month starting 23rd Oct…
Had to activate the offer from the email so may be targeted?

    • Kai says:

I’m getting an email offering 0.5% – isn’t that the original rate, or is it on top of the original 0.5%?

      • Lev441 says:

  • Anna says:

Re the Donald Russell offer – I just ordered their Xmas dinner box which serves 4 which is currently reduced from £83 to £56 as I didn’t to miss out if they sold out! I got an email immediately from Amex confirming the offer had been used. You can choose any date from November 11th for delivery if you need to make some room in the freezer!

    • David D says:

Oddly enough I did the same earlier today, all for planning a lockdown Christmas for the two of us. Christmas Day and Boxing Day sorted if we can’t see anyone else. Plus plenty of turkey sandwiches off the crown for till the midweek.

  • AT says:

Anyone else experiencing issues withdrawing money from Ernie today?

    • Steve says:

Changing to the Edge browser worked for me – didn’t work with Chrome or IE

      • AT says:

        Thanks, that did the trick!

        • SL says:

Hoping someone can help here. Took out the ICC dollar card. Attempted to pay the membership fee of $100 using my Starling account using SWIFT transfer of which they charged me £5.50. This was on top of the $100.

Amex only received $80 so I had to make another transaction and another fee. Again Amex received a reduced amount. My Starling statement shows full amounts sent and the SWIFT fee. Is there an intermediary charge I am missing here?

Starling are blaming Amex and vice versa. I suspect it is Starling who are at fault. Any info on this stuff would be useful.

          Thanks

      • Grant says:

Many thanks, dreading the prospect of having to call.

    • Aston100 says:

The draw is tomorrow isn’t it? You still eligible of withdrawing on the 1st of the month?

      • Craig says:

        Draw was today I think?

        • Chef says:

I’ve never known the draw to be on the first of the month?

          • JJ says:

Well the results are available online which shows who has won the million etc, so guess they do the draw on the 1st but you can’t find out til 2nd

  • David says:

Never flown CE before and I fully accept it won’t be the usual experience at the moment however been offered an upgrade for £59 from LHR to IST – worth it?
Tempted to go for it just for lounge access (no status) and a bit more space on a long short haul flight (long legs!).
    Thoughts?

    • TGLoyalty says:

There’s not much extra leg room perhaps an inch on the newly delivered planes but I think it’s worth £59 for lounge and drinks for 3-4 hrs to Istanbul.

      • Harry T says:

Likewise, does anyone think it’s worth paying £49 to upgrade from HBO to CE for a one way from LHR to NCL?

        • Anna says:

Not unless you really need check in luggage! Or are planning a heavy session in the lounge. I assume that LHR-NCL isn’t that much different to LHR-MAN, 25 mins up, 25 mins down and the crew have done really well if they get round the whole CE cabin!

    • Harry T says:

£59 seems like a good offer for that route.

    • Rob says:

You really need to ask us whether its worth £59 for lounge access and four hours with a guaranteed empty seat next to you plus the (admittedly not great) current food and drink offering?

If this is a cash booking then the extra Avios earned will be worth a decent chunk of the £59.

    • Steve says:

Turkey’s just removed from the green list

    • David says:

Thanks all for your replies. All moot now given Turkey has (surprisingly I must admit) just been removed from the quarantine exemption list – fortunately I didn’t take up the offer when it was sent to me earlier in the day. I wonder if BA had advance warning?!

  • Mark says:

Has there been any updates for the BA Amex companion voucher? Will it be 2 years if triggered today without the additional 6 months?

    • Rob says:

No update, so I am assuming you only get the usual 2 years if you trigger it today.

  • Aston100 says:

Can anyone please suggest somewhere to go at Christmas for a staycation? Just 3 to 5 nights. 2 adults.
Can be anywhere on GB mainland, but not London or York.
Would be good to know the reason for the recommended place.

    Thanks

    • Louise K says:

Gleneagles is very nice at the best of times, but lovely at Christmas.

Excellent food and drink with nice Christmas programme. Lots of great walking nearby not to mention activities available on the resort. Nice spa too.

    • Nick_C says:

No one knows which parts of the UK, if any, will be open at Xmas.

I think the only thing certain about Xmas is that infections will spiral as families and friends mingle.

I wonder what Granny will be getting this Xmas?

    • Anna says:

I agree with Louise that Perthshire would be a stunning place to spend Xmas (we’ve taken a number of walking holidays in that region in the winter partly to be able to be surrounded by snowy mountains!), but as Nick says, who knows what restrictions will be in place – Edinburgh has just had its Xmas markets etc cancelled. Northumbria is also beautiful and has lots of opportunity for beach walks if it’s not raining too much. The Lake District is also very picturesque, and might be mercifully quiet this year.
Whatever you decide, I would recommend a refundable booking!

  • dezbez says:

I believe in the past it always has, not sure I’ve seen anyone confirm (or deny) it this time yet…
