The HfP chat thread – Thursday 1st October

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

HFP-Wordmark-Black

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/10/01/the-hfp-chat-thread-thursday-1st-october/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

A nice Amex offer on Platinum Card at for Co-op. Spend £15 get £5 back. Haven’t been in a Co-op for a good while to get food so a decent incentive to go.

    • Craig says:

I normally don’t even bother looking at CoOp offers because Lincolnshire doesn’t accept Amex. Imagine my surprise when I found an infiltrator nearby that is on the list, not worth the journey alone but if I’m passing.

      • Craig says:

Clearly I meant Lincolnshire CoOp doesn’t accept Amex as opposed to every shop in the county!

      • Andrew MS says:

I have it on my (free) Amex Rewards credit card.

    • Andrew says:

And seems to be on all the supps too.

    • Genghis says:

Thanks. A genuine saving as money off council tax. The usual Halifax coop offers have been thin on the ground recently.

      • Secret Squirrel says:

Also nice £5 back topping up Monese.

        • The Streets says:

Where did you see the Monese offer?

        • rams1981 says:

For this to work just need the mid range package it seems? 5k monthly limit. How fast do you get shut down now if that’s all you are doing?

        • PolKuZZZ says:

Unless you have Monese Premium this incurs a fee right, or the limits are super low. Is anyone paying for Monese Premium, or have another one of those codes which aren’t PREMIUMPLEASE or 1MONTHFREE?

I have this weird sense of FOMO with the Monese card thinking I could put it to good use but on the free plan there isn’t much use for it (and I had forgotten my Premium trial expired and got stung as well!)

    • Harry T says:

Nice, thank you. Saved to my card.

    • Vit says:

Got them in both main and supp Gold. Thanks!

    • WaynedP says:

Same offer has also appeared on my Marriott Bonvoy Amex card, and includes my local Co-op 🙂

    • Nick_C says:

      Thanks. It’s on my ARCC.

Not applicable at petrol stations though (which is where the best Coop Food store is around here).

    • Sandra says:

Also £10 off £40 spend on my BA Blue at Donald Russell meats (online) who I believe are decent quality butchers for anyone buying online rather than going out to shops

  • Maciek says:

Any success on paying Seagulls with Curve recently? I’ve been having problems with paying the Red Company with Curve recently too – charge doesn’t seem to be hitting Curve at all…

    • John says:

It’s working fine for me with Curve and HH.

    • Wollhouse says:

Ok… sorry to ask, but I’ve ploughed through historical comments…ive finally managed to get my friend bendy working, have worked out most of his friends, but not seagulls. I’m sure we’d get along, if only I knew who he was! I’m sure it’s so obvious I’ll kick myself. Happy for a reply with just a name and no reference to the bird as I appreciate they like flying under cover. Thx

      • Steve says:

Seagulls is the nickname for Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club… If that helps.

        • Wollhouse says:

Bizarrely, I actually knew that…which is rather random as I live in the Scottish Borders! And don’t follow football… but, I eliminated that as the bendy friend as it didn’t seem to fit?? Will laugh if it is

          • Jonathan says:

The seagull will never pick up the tab when his bendy friend goes shopping but he’s happy for his bearded friend to repay him as long as mr bendy is the middle man. Personally it’s not a path I’d suggest embarking on though.

          • TripRep says:

If someone would like to drop me an email with a summary of the above MS technique I’d really appreciate it, have a full house of the above + the anarchy R card.

            Cheers 😊

          • BJ says:

            Newbies I understand but @TripRep …seriously?

          • Steve says:

To close the loop, the link is Brighton’s shirt sponsors, and (one of?) the largest employers in the area.

      • Luckyjim says:

        American Express.
        Shoot me.

        • Sandgrounder says:

LuckyJim, you are officially banned from Fight Club.

        • Wollhouse says:

Jonathan, i can’t see how to reply to you, but thank you! BJ, triprep might suddenly find he gets all the “comments” LadyLondon was missing last weekend:)

          • BJ says:

@Lady London missing anythihg, surely not? Starting to think I’m missing something, I need to find more time to keep up with the comments.

          • Lady London says:

what did I miss? was travelling did not look in much.

            Where should I look?

          • Wollhouse says:

Bj, Lady London- it was only that you wondered where all the rude commenters had gone, and wondered why it was so slow;)

      • Ashish says:

We should not have secret here. You can pay you Amex bill with curve + virgin every time.

        • guesswho2000 says:

But we should try and keep it somewhat low key, so it’s not ruined for everyone.

        • Nick_C says:

And you should be aware that people working for Amex read these comments on daily basis.

        • Optimus Prime says:

I wonder why Konto stopped accepting credit card top-ups two weeks after it was mentioned here…

        • Aston100 says:

It’s not about secrets. It’s more about minimising organisations doing an internet keyword search for their product.

        • Lady London says:

stop by gobbing off, @Ashish !

          • Crafty says:

Instead of this, can we talk about Trip Rep’s email address? Made me spit out my tea!

          • TGLoyalty says:

It’s obviously just for blogs like this

        • aDifferentSimon says:

Last time I tried (in May) you couldn’t

  • C says:

If a FTV is requested for an avios booking using a 241 voucher, can the companion on the future booking be a different person or does it have to be the same?
    Thanks

    • Anna says:

BA seems to be telling people it’s got to be the original passengers who travel on any new booking.

      • memesweeper says:

If you fancy a row with BA, then screenshot the T&Cs at the time of booking which make no mention of such a restriction, just a voucher to the *value* of your booking:-

        https://www.britishairways.com/en-gb/information/incident/coronavirus/latest-information#cancel

        • memesweeper says:

… in fact, your question has prompted me to screenshot them now because of my own, upcoming, and at-risk booking!

        • Wollhouse says:

Interesting. I’m just about to rebook and cash flights are really cheap so if I could argue a different passenger, that would be great. As Anna said, I was told by the agent i had to rebook my 241 and Avios FTV with both the original passengers.

        • pauldb says:

That links says: “The voucher allows you to make a future booking in the name of the person on the original ticket. If you had multiple bookings each person will receive their own voucher to use. The voucher is non-transferable.”
Specifically when you cancel a 241 you get 2 vouchers. The companion’s voucher belongs to the companion and is tied to their name.

          • Tocsin says:

T&Cs seem to be clear. As a what-if – if the companion subsequently pops their clogs, what would BA say then?

          • memesweeper says:

Thanks for the heads-up @PaulDB. As far as I can see, the statement

“The voucher allows you to make a future booking in the name of the person on the original ticket. If you had multiple bookings each person will receive their own voucher to use. The voucher is non-transferable.”

appears in the FAQ, and not in the T&Cs. There’s nothing in the terms that covers it. Granted, you’d have to be really keen on arguing with BA to push this, but I’d be willing to try to if I had to.

        • Lady London says:

          Go for it.
BA never published the terms on which a FTV could be used at the time of forcing people to take them so serves them right if we take measures to stop them making it hard to use them later.

    • Annabel says:

I recently rebooked 2-4-1 with FTV and original passenger had to be the same

  • Heather says:

I have avios flights booked MCO-LGW in a few weeks time which for obvious reasons won’t be taking, will I have to pay the cancellation fees for these or eligible for a full refund?
I’d hoped this would be cancelled but it doesn’t look like it so far

    • Anna says:

If BA doesn’t cancel you’ll have to pay the £35 pp fee or take a FTV. Is there a possibility these flights will be moved to LHR though, which might give you a get out?

  • Vit says:

Question on bendy please – – got blue with underlying free IHG card. Daily cash ATM limit is £200.

Can I take £200 from ATM without any cash advanced charge from IHG and any other cost incured?

What is the maximum I can take cash from ATM per week, is it based on my overall limit which is £1000.

    Cheers,
    Vit

  • Tazzy says:

I have a tax bill coming up. What are my options for paying it and getting points? Last year I paid with capital on tap but it was MasterCard at that point.

    • Jonathan says:

Curve métal & that’s it now I think.

      • Genghis says:

Tesco debit if you have it (and it’s tax in your name, i.e. not corporation tax).

        • Lev441 says:

I’ve paid a bunch of VAT bills in the past with the Tesco card.. is this something I shouldn’t be doing?

          • Sue says:

I did this for 9 months – Tesco contacted me last week to inform me they are closing my account as it has been used for business purposes.
Although contacted them and explained I was unaware of rule – they refuse to budge.
Warning – do not pay VAT or Corporation Tax with Tesco bank account !

          • Genghis says:

Surely VAT OK if sole trader, not OK if incorporated?

          • Crafty says:

Usually business related spend is blocked.

  • Matthew says:

Anyone know if BA are still allowing you to rebook a cancelled Avios flight to any date in the future within the year of ticket issue date? Thanks

    • memesweeper says:

Cancelled by them? Yes, but you may need to escalate to a senior member of staff. Not all call centre staff are trained/informed to handle this.

  • DJ says:

Amex Marriott Offer – Do I have to physically use the chip and PIN at check-out in order to trigger the offer? Or if the card is already on my file, I can just let the hotel to charge it automatically? Thanks
