The HfP chat thread – Thursday 1st October

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/10/01/the-hfp-chat-thread-thursday-1st-october/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Does it work to cancel my Amex gold (get an Amex Rewards before that), wait a week, then re-apply for the Gold? Will my 1st year be free still? I’m ok without the signing bonus (and now with the 24 months lapse inbetween joining bonus it’s a bit long for me).

I spend quite heavily so having the extra 10k MR with £15k spend can be helpful. Holding the HSBC Premier WEMC as well, and will be getting the Virgin one (though with availability so bad on Rewards redemption not sure if it’s worth it, but guess it’s the next best option).

Already have the BAPP and companion voucher.

    • Rob says:

You’ll get another free first year and another 2 lounge passes, yes.

I’d give it more than a week though! 6-8 weeks looks less like you’re having a laugh at their expense.

      • TomD says:

Haha cool thanks! Does this affect my credit rating out of curiosity…?

I also can never seem to get approval for the Virgin card with 0 debt/mortgage and high enough income…guess i’ll have to write in.

        • Lady London says:

I think Virgin card may be closed soon to new entrants.

        • Genghis says:

Don’t worry about your “credit rating”, unless your doing loads of applications for credit. Also, having no recent history of debt is actually a bad thing. How does the credit institution know how you’ll handle the credit?

    • TGLoyalty says:

Not sure if I’m reading this wrong about extra £15k bonus.

If you spend £15k but cancel before your 13th month you won’t get the 10k bonus

  • Paul says:

does anyone know where I can see my virgin vouchers i’ve been awarded? I can see from activity history something to do with reward qualification but have no idea where to see the rewards with expiry dates etc. thanks

    • Lev441 says:

You need to get in touch with them for the expiry dates etc

    • James. says:

      two options.

      1) Take the date on your account and add 3 years (if earned before April 2020 and hadn’t expired by March 2020) or 2 years if added after

      or

      2) Use the text service and ask them to confirm. Takes them at least a few days to reply mind

  • Paul74 says:

A question about Lufthansa. I keep seeing comments about them sitting on refunds here. Does that include refunds for fully flexible fares or have they ‘just’ been sitting on them for fares which they were only required to refund after cancelling flights? I’d be grateful for any experiences shared. Cheers

    • Harry T says:

They didn’t refund me for a non refundable booking back in April. They cancelled my flight. I used a chargeback in the end.

  • Andrew says:

Just had this email from Barclaycard.

For Barclaycard customers, British Airways are offering 10% c4shb4ck on travel booked directly through them throughout October. Whether it’s booking some winter sun while it’s frosty here, or giving yourself something to look forward to next year.

All you have to do is book at ba.com or the British Airways mobile app, spend over £200 and pay with your Barclaycard, to earn c4shb4ck to a maximum of £100 across all bookings made with your card (the offer is only available on non-refundable bookings and T&Cs apply*).

    How it works

Just go to ba.com or the British Airways mobile app to book, and spend over £200 with your Barclaycard

Your c4shb4ck will be credited to your Barclaycard account on your subsequent statement (maximum £100 per customer).

Bit confused by the “non-refundable” element though at these times…

    • Andrew says:

      And the T&Cs

      * This offer is only available for the recipient of this email. To qualify for the 10% c4shb4ck total transactions must be at least £200.01 or more and made at BA.com or via the British Airways mobile app. You can make multiple bookings during the offer period (between 12:01am BST on 1 October 2020 and 11:59pm GMT on 31 October 2020) for travel commencing from the UK and valid for all travel dates, but the maximum c4shb4ck payable is £100. Payment must be made in full at the time of booking with a valid Barclaycard and on transactions made in Great British Pounds (GBP). No cash or credit alternative is available for this promotion. This promotion applies only to new bookings made within the offer period. All bookings made are subject to the fare rules for the class of the ticket booked including (but not limited to) ticket flexibility, change fees, cancellations or refunds, https://www.britishairways.com/en-gb/information/legal/british-airways/general-conditions-of-carriage . If tickets are cancelled or refunded, the statement credit can be reversed, this includes schedule changes issued by BA and not accepted by the Eligible Participant. All travel on BA flights is subject to British Airways general conditions of carriage for passengers and baggage and the notice and conditions of contract contained on each ticket or itinerary. British Airways is solely responsible for British Airways products and services and Barclaycard doesn’t provide any advice, confirmation or warranty in relation to them. This promotion is governed by English law and is subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the English courts. The promoter is Barclays Bank UK PLC Registered in England No. 9740322. Registered Office: 1 Churchill Place, London, E14 5HP. British Airways Plc, Waterside, Speedbird Way, Harmondsworth, UB7 0GB. Registered in England: 1777777.

      • Harry T says:

Just received the same email. Does anyone reckon this will work when paying a BA holidays balance? I’m only paid the deposit on a BAH booking so far.

    • BS says:

      Yup, I got too!
If BA werent on my naughty list for currently leaving me stranded and refusing to reroute me, I might be interested!

      • Lady London says:

where did you get left? and what reroute did BA refuse to provide in contravention of their EC261 obligations ?

    • Mr. AC says:

Well boo that they launched this offer after the sale ended yesterday, but makes sense. Thank you for highlighting it!

  • Anna says:

I’ve just noticed a Donald Russell offer on my BAPP, not sure if it’s been there for a while or if it’s appeared because I tried them recently. The meat is really good and excellent value for the quality! I’m probably going to order one of their Christmas dinner hampers you can just stick in the oven.

    • Anna says:

It’s £10 back for £50 spend, valid till 31/12 so ideal for the Xmas season.

    • Andrew says:

It wasn’t there for me at 8am, but is there now. £10 back on £40.

My colleague has just had a £10 back on £40 at Gap arrive too.

      • Anna says:

The sharing fillet of sirloin which was on offer last week at least is absolutely delicious! I recommend serving it with Aspen fries, a dollop of truffle mayo and a glass of barrel-aged red.

    • RussellH says:

I think it is new – it has just appeared on my plain BA Amex.
Your experience is clearly better than mine was (true, many years ago now).
They were advertising Swiss specialities in the magazine sent to Swiss nationals in the UK, and I bought some. Very disappointing. I got stuff that sells for a few CHF in any supermarket in Switzerland, but paying Fortnums prices.
They went onto my very short list of companies that I never want to deal with again

  • Colin MacKinnon says:

Edinburgh Christmas festivities just cancelled, say BBC.

Might make IHG deals in Edin not so attractive?

    • Anna says:

I was assuming it would be very low key but Edinburgh has plenty of non-festive attractions so I’m going to keep my booking, especially as I’ve got an excellent deal on a suite upgrade.

      • Anna says:

Though I wonder if the cash price for a junior suite at The George will now drop from £400 pn in December!

        • Colin MacKinnon says:

Might make IHG deals less attractive, but will make Edinburgh itself more attractive – in my view!

        • BP says:

The George are playing games. Cancelled all the reward nights when they closed now they are reopen they have loaded no reward nights.

  • r* says:

Where do you request an increase to curve limits?

Do you have to use the in-app chat or is it through the ‘if you have any questions about your limits’ link that takes you to a form on the website?

    • Jonathan says:

Either. Just be careful that you’re in a decent position prior to asking ie. lots of small, everyday purchases, minimal games & close to current limit. If the above doesn’t apply then follow those rules for 6-8 weeks before asking.

  • john says:

If I do a Hilton points and money booking, is the cash part charged to the card immediately?
    Thanks
