Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Friday 25th September

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/09/25/the-hfp-chat-thread-friday-25th-september/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Anyone have a dummies guide to how Future Travel Vouchers are supposed to work?
I took a FTV for a trip to Madeira. I originally booked it on Avios 17,000 plus £35 fees. I thought I would try my luck rebooking for November. It’s still showing as 17000 plus £35 fees. So, I thought it would be a straight swap. No, they wanted an extra 2000 avios and another £41 in fees…..and they couldn’t explain why after 30 mins on the phone.
I’ve got 6 of these to swap. Wish I hadn’t bothered.

How was it left? did they agree to investigate?

I would HUACA another day as near to 8.30am or 7pm as poss. Make sure you’re talking to Newcastle and not to India.

If they still wont take the voucher in full exchange, tell them in that case you want the avios and cash back in full as there is no reason for them to require more cash or avios

Mention that you either need it all refunded or booked on the flight you requested within 14 days as you have plansto make and avios seats might disappear.

Please post how you get on.

Lady London , you are so right ! . I phoned BA at just gone 8pm to make a booking with my future travel voucher . I ended up with New Delhi for one hour and 20 minutes . I’m afraid to say I lost my patience totally as they wanted to charge me booking fee per adult for calling when voucher not able to use online

I was very angry just after 10pm . Following day I called again and got a lovely lady from Newcastle who said that India can’t keep up with so many changes …… She was excellent . This was Tuesday this week

        • Lady London says:

“India [the Btitish Airways call centre there] can’t keep up with so many changes” I praise the BA Newcastle lady’s diplomacy.

If that’s the case then it dates back to 2013, IME, that the British Airways India call centre hasn’t been ‘keeping up with changes’.

If you value your sanity, avoid trying to do anything you should be able to do, if you realize you’ve been connected to them.

After too much time wasted with them and one final straw when they literally had me in tears 50 mins into the call with them, why do you think I am proud to have given refund advice to passengers on British Airways that must have cost BA at least £600,000 that they weren’t going to pay out!

BA it’s time to bring those call centre jobs back into the UK. After all, surely you’ve reduced UK salary packages close enough to Indian wage rates now?

Anyone planning a stay might want to bear in mind that the service might be a bit chaotic! But they always seemed pretty sure my stay In December was going ahead and have offered me an upgrade to a Junior Suite for £80 per night (original room booked for 26k points pn). I’m a bit torn now …

  • tomdoyle says:

Bought something through the BA shopping website…made a partial return subsequently on my purchase. Looks like the miles wasn’t clawed back. Is this normal or just lucky?

  • Jim says:

Just for an easily from my Amex ICC platinum card extending double membership rewards points on spending to 22nd dec

Anybody got it for the U.K. or business cards?

  • Harj says:

Hit my BAPP voucher after only 6 months this year, what do people normally do after? My wife only closed hers at the start of the year but the plan was to wait 2 years for the sign-up.

Am I better still opening one in her name and going for another voucher? Decisions!

    • Anna says:

If you’ll have enough avios to make good use of another voucher, it might be worth earning another 241 rather than waiting till the 24 months is up. If you decide to close both cards and wait, just remember you need access to an Amex to pay the fees on a 241 booking, if you plan doing that in the meantime. We ended up with enough 241s to see us through till mid 2022 so I’m going for the 2 year break now.

      • Vit says:

For a 2 years break, I have to cancel all of my personnel amex cards? I just cancelled my blue BA amex card but still have my gold one in its free year till March 2021.

        • Rob says:

You can keep Gold as long as you apply for a BA Premium Plus in 2 years. You are blocked from ALL other personal card bonuses though – the 24 month clock on those won’t start until you cancel the lot.

          • Vit says:

Ah, thanks Rob. I thought I have to cancel the Gold card as well — the T&C stated in the amex website for the BAPP is clear. It specifies “BA” Personal Card!

            New Cardmember offer:
This new Cardmember offer is only available if you have not held a personal British Airways American Express Card within the previous 24 months. If you have held a personal British Airways American Express Card within the previous 24 months, you will be entitled to all other Card benefits, excluding the welcome offer.

I can’t find clear info on Revolut foreign currency fees.
I’ve checked the FAQs and can’t find what I’m looking for.
I’ve tried their live help through the app and it is terrible.

So can anyone here kindly confirm what the limits are please?
For clarity, at this time I am talking about purchasing something on the internet that is priced in USD.
At some point in the future, I may want to take the card with me abroad and spend in shops.
This is the basic free Revolut account.

    Thanks.

    • ChrisBCN says:

One of the first links when I searched! £1000 limit per rolling month on the free account. 0.5% fee if you go above that, plus there is an extra fee at the weekend, so avoid that.

      https://www.revolut.com/legal/fees

    • Wollhouse says:

I routinely swap currencies in excess of £1000 and, to date, I’ve never been charged the fee for being over the £1000. And the exchanges have been done in amounts like £2500 so it’s not as if they forgot to add up my rolling average. Obviously their t&c’s say differently…And if you’re buying in $ online, make sure you’ve got your online transactions turned on in your security setting. A pain in the bum error I make regularly as I forget I’ve turned the feature off 😉

      • Nick_C says:

Similar issue with turning Revolut security features on and off. When I arrived in Japan, the first thing I did was try to buy a train ticket. Revolut was rejected. When I later got internet access, there was a message saying the transaction had failed because swipe payments were disabled. (They usually are.)

Only about a third of the Mr & Mrs Smith collection is going onto IHG.
Any update when they may be available to Book?

    • Rob says:

No, not heard anything. It’s worth questioning whether Mr & Mrs Smith will survive covid.
