The HfP chat thread – Friday 25th September

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/09/25/the-hfp-chat-thread-friday-25th-september/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

    Current Business class service offerings
I know long haul BA are offering their box concept which is not very appealing . Qatar close to full service . Any idea what Delta /American / Virgin / Emirates are offering during Covid

Looking to book somewhere for over new year and want best experience

    • Kumar says:

The way I have done to change date and destination airport was cancel the original booking for E voucher and call back the call centre immediately and booked for the new date and destination without any change fee. Unlimited changes for free.
Based on my experience when i changed the date and destination from Abu Dhabi to Dubai the call centre done it without the voucher path . When i changed from Ibiza to Dalaman they asked me to cancel and get the voucher and call BA to redeem the voucher.

    • ChrisC says:

VS are basically full service with hot meals but with some amendments such as limited choice and all served in one tray. I remember Rob has written about the VS service.

You’ve not mentioned Lufthansa but they are also providing amended full service in business class.

It’s been mentioned here and on flyer talk that BA should be returning to normal service at the end of October.

  • Annabel says:

Good morning. Does anyone know if I can change date and destination with BA Avios booking under their ‘book with confidence’ ? ( fits within their criteria of bookings made between March and sept 2020 for travel by 31st august 2021). Thanks so much.

    • Blenz101 says:

Why even a question if you know it qualifies. You can as a minimum get a future travel voucher covering the value of the Avios and tax paid

      • Annabel says:

Because I don’t want an FTV just to change the date and destination! Thank you for your help though

      • Jonathan says:

You can’t force Avios availability to open up like you could if flight was cancelled. If there’s Avios availability then you need to get an FTV then rebook.

        • Annabel says:

          Thanks Jonathan

        • Andrew says:

Not quite correct – you can ring them to change the booking as long as there is availability for Avios and you just pay any difference in fees or Avios. You can get a FTV but an Avios FTV can’t be used online, only on the phone. So if you know what you want to change it to now, then just ring to do that. If you don’t know, then ring to get a FTV and then ring again when you have plans. This policy applies to all Avios bookings including One World flights such a Cathay or Qantas.

    • Rob says:

Is your flight cancelled? BA will move it to ANY date even if there is no Avios availability showing.

If your flight cancelled? You can obviously move it to another date with Avios availability. You may or may not have to pay the £35 per person change fee. Or just cancel for the same £35 and get the Avios and cash back so you can rebook.

      • Annabel says:

Thanks Rob. No it’s not cancelled. Just wanted to know if I could change the destination and dates of your award booking without any fees and without taking the FTV. Doesn’t look possible sadly.

      • Andrew says:

If it was booked in the booking with confidence period then there is no change fee. This applies to all Avios bookings with any airline.

        • Annabel says:

Thanks Andrew. Just called BA and they said I would have to take FTV if I wanted to change destination and date at no charge ( even if re booking Avios flights immediately ) 😞

          • Andrew says:

Why the sad face? Just take the voucher and rebook with them a few minutes later when the voucher arrives. It really makes no difference? The FTV or the change needs to be done on line and neither incur a fee.

          • Rob says:

That’s not a problem though – voucher arrives in 10 minutes.

    • Worzel says:

Given your response to a polite and reasonable question from Annabel, I suggest you go back to, or go to bed!

      • Blenz101 says:

Wasn’t intended to be rude. Just saying if you know that it was booked during the book with confidence scheme then the book with confidence rules apply. Sorry to anybody if it came across as a little too direct.

    • Andrew says:

Unless you live in Australia no possibility to take delivery of it.

    • Rhys says:

      Good luck getting it delivered…

    • planeconcorde says:

Yeah, but delivery only to certain Australian cities. I would have liked to cart, but not all that alcohol. 😉

    • Lady London says:

      Haha.
Did you know Qantas were selling off their airplane ready meals as well. Excelent pricing, worked out at $2 or so per meal IIRC. They might even have made a profit on them 🙂

Seeing that trolley and that you could have it im your home made me remember that that’s apparently what some legacy BA cabin staff had in the old days. How they managed to get full sets of glassware, cutlery, champagne and the trolleys off the airport and into their homes I have always wondered but apparently they did 🙂

Anyone spiling the beans on how they got a trolley out of the airport in their handbag ?

  • Peter K says:

    @LadyLondon
I used your Metro code several days ago (a week?) so hopefully we’ll both get a bonus from it, thank you.

    • Lady London says:

Thank you Peter I’ve never done anything like this before so thank you. You will find Metro Bank nice people to deal with.

  • James. says:

I have seen this be mentioned before but am finding some payments using Curve (Blue) are now being declined by Curve when last month they were processes (Fronted Off).

There has definitely been a change made somewhere

  • Eric the Half a Bee says:

IHG credit card spend: I was under the impression that this counts towards status, and indeed my IHG account is showing as 120k points accumulated and re-qualifying as Spire. However, when chasing my Spire 25k benefit with IHG, I was told that CC spend doesn’t count toward status and I am not entitled to the benefit. Can anyone confirm one way or the other? Thanks

    • Liz says:

IHG CC spend does qualify. This is how I get Spire Elite every year. Hopefully hit the 55K mark by next month to get the 25k benefit.

    • James. says:

Credit card spend does count to status as when you spend you get points the more points you get the more levels you move up. Give n you have £120k points credit card spend is irrelevant. The issue here is you have re-qualified and not received your benefit that’s the message you need to give them to investigate.

    • BLT says:

Definitely not true. I’ve earned spire status through credit card spend for the past few years, including a couple of months ago.

    • Andrew says:

Not true at all. Just do a simple test yourself – make a note of your status points today, then again after your next Creation statement and you’ll see it go up. The line on the IHG statement even has two entries for the credit card points- one for points and one for status points so it’s quite clear.

      • Eric the Half a Bee says:

Thanks for the replies folks. The issue isn’t the requalification (I have requalified for Spire) but the lack of availability of the 25k bonus points. The reply from IHG indicated that CC spend doesn’t count. I may end up giving them a ring to see if I fare any better.

        • Anna says:

Is the option to choose the 25k points not showing in your account or is it just not working?
I’ve been really impressed with IHG this year. Due to extra income and reduced requirement for status, OH and I have both achieved Spire. This tracked the same day as Creation sent the qualifying points to our account and the option to choose 25k points appeared and worked immediately. OH’s free night certificate appeared pretty much as soon as his 12 month statement was generated, hoping mine will appear similarly quickly next month.

          • Rob says:

It didn’t appear for those who got a status extension, despite promises it would (IHG website still says you will). Perhaps this is part of the same issue?

    • Eric the Half a Bee says:

Rob – I did get the COVID status extension, but have since re-qualified, largely due to cc spend. There is no reference anywhere on my account that the Spire (re)qualification bonus is available.

Selfridges offers spend £150 get £30 have appeared on my Platinum cards this morning

    • Stu N says:

I just tried to post about this but the post has disappeared into the ether. I have this on my Platinum card – should stack with the spend 100/ get 100 back on Platinum cards so £150 of goods for £20. Ca marche pour moi.

      • Stu N says:

Also if you go through the shopping bit on BA website you should pick up some bonus Avios. They are almost paying you to take goods off their hands…

    • rams1981 says:

thanks. On my wife’s gold and my supp but not on my gold/her supp.

  • stevenhp1987 says:

Curve: recently upgraded to Metal and now all my online payments are being declined. Curve seem to take the money and refund.

I’ve reached out to them but has this happened to anyone else?

    • The Streets says:

Yes I have had a number of declines from Curve past few days.. still waiting for a response as to why!

    • Peter K says:

It’s been fine for me over the past few days and I also only recently upgraded to metal.
