The HfP chat thread – Wednesday 23rd September

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/09/23/the-hfp-chat-thread-wednesday-23rd-september/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Any other platinum members targeted with the £100 spend at JL/WTR or Harvey Nicks and Selfridges? Seems like they did not accidentally apply to supplemental cards like last time?

    • Andrew says:

+1 I’m sure this is like last time and has been offered to everyone as a retention sweetener as we head into more uncertain times. And yes just in my primary this time.

    • Marwan says:

Just on my primary card here as well.

    • Lev441 says:

Was just about to cancel platinum so this is good in a way. Do JL/Selfridges or Waitrose sell gift cards for amazon?

    • Harry T says:

I’ve got it, but just on the main card. I like the offer – Waitrose is five mins walk so it’s money in my pocket.

      • DB2020 says:

Still nothing on my Amex Platinum card! 😳 Getting annoyed now. Just might have to cancel the card in the next few weeks, after some planned spend and transfer of the points in my account.

        • Harry T says:

Ring and complain. I received 40k MR when I threatened to cancel. You could get the offer added to your card, and some points.

  • Marwan says:

Hoping for some advice from this group re: Amex Platinum car hire insurance. I have lodged a claim with Axa on the 14/09 for a chipped windshield in our last car hire with Avis. Axa was supposed to review by the 19/09 (5 working days) but still hasn’t done that, and rep on the phone couldn’t tell me how long it would take (Covid delays).
I want to cancel my Amex Platinum (as have hit bonus now); will that prevent Axa from processing the claim? Should I keep the card open while the claim is open?

    • Charlieface says:

You definitely don’t need the card open once you’ve made the claim, because their liablility already exists.
It may make it more difficult for them to pay you as they normally give you a credit on the card, but they could always BACS it or send a cheque

      • Marwan says:

Thanks, that’s what I was hoping. Of course with today’s news of £100 credit at JL, there is an incentive to keep the card open for a bit more

  • Geoff says:

Email today from Hilton – the 100% bonus points offer has been extended to 25 September.

  • Trevor says:

    ‘morning folks
Can I use my BAEC Avios stash to pay or part pay for BA Holiday packages? Or maybe just use them to upgrade the flight element?
    Thanks for your time
    Trev

    • ChrisC says:

Pay no upgrade yes (in some circumstances)

On the flyer talk BA board there is a guide to spending avios and there is a section in there about upgrading via BA holidays.

  • JJ says:

Can I request a FTV voucher for a BA 241 Avios booking if BA haven’t cancelled the flight yet?
My 241 ends in November and I’m assuming my October flight to Canada booked with it gets cancelled but if it doesn’t would still like the FTV rather than a refund of avios and taxes.

    • AJA says:

When did you book the flight? If it was before 3 March I don’t think you can apply for a FTV. For flights booked before 3 March it has to be a flight operating by 30 September.

  • rams1981 says:

In case this was missed last night does anyone know the best way to escalate to complaint and avoid bot like replies from PayPal? Their website is not very customer friendly and they keep ignoring my requests.

    • John says:

      What’s the problem?

If you understand how paypal works you won’t have any problems, it’s all done by bots.

If you can’t get through to a human in the UK, the only real option is to send them a letter before action

    • Matt says:

You can take it to the financial ombudsman if you’re getting nowhere. You need to have reached deadlock with a complaint to Paypal first, though I was able to explain that I was going round in circles with replies that didn’t address the issue and the ombudsman accepted that. Download/screenshot your conversation with Paypal, as it disappears after a few months.

    • Charlieface says:

A chargeback on Paypal works if the claim is against Paypal not the merchant. Might be worth a try

    • rams1981 says:

Damn I tried google searching, it’s my default haha, and missed this. Thanks

  • WaynedP says:

I need to decide soon whether or not to renew my insurance4carhire annual policy.

Any experience of receiving any sweeteners to renew ?

They are the only company not to have provided any Covid bonus ( like extending policy by a couple of months, or partial refund of premium ) but have presumably benefitted from a windfall drop in claims as much as any other insurer has, surely ?

    • Darren says:

None for me, so I let it slide. Who knows when I’ll need it again.

    • Lady London says:

Bettersafe hasnt proactively offered anything due to Covid but my end of year is not for a while.

They have been superb to deal with on multiple occasions decent discoubts for renewal and last year offered me a free year’s cover for a comparatively minor thing which I declined gratefully telling them not necessary – but at least they offered.

Questor is also good to deal with and a track record with them could be useful as they are one of the few that adds vans and even more unusual will cover mobile homes as well.

    • WaynedP says:

Thanks for helpful responses, all – much appreciated

    • Andy says:

They’ve probably benefited from the drop in claims, however I wouldn’t be surprised if they also suffered significantly more in terms of new premiums. Most people opt for single trip rather than annual cover (hence why it’s so cheap in comparison), and with much less travel they’re probably having a tough year in terms of revenues

  • JohnT says:

Fast BA refund data point. Cancelled 2 flights on Monday due to move from LGW to LHR, one cash the other cash+avios. Got through within 10 mins (0800 number no options). Avios back straight away and cash refunded to Amex today!! Just ready to trigger the 241 before Tuesday.

    • ChrisC says:

Just got through very quickly this morning on the number in a cancellation email. About 5 mins wait to be answered (by a lovely Newcastle lass working from home) and 15 mins to deal with my issues – one a rebooking because of a cancelled flight (complicated by the originals not been ticketted yet as I was using an FTV and she needed to check somethign with her back office) and a couple of minutes to cancel a booking I made last night for a refund,

Really can’t complain about today but I was fumming last week!
