The HfP chat thread – Saturday 19th September

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

HFP-Wordmark-Black

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/09/19/the-hfp-chat-thread-saturday-19th-september/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Anyone stayed at Trump Turnberry, Luxury Collection at Christmas? Do they still offer free breakfast for Bonvoy platinum and above over the festive period? Is the Christmas dinner any good?

Just looking at the xmas period and you can book a room for 35,000 points a night when cash rates are £400-500 a night. Might be an option for people considering a staycation over Christmas instead of going abroad.

    • TGLoyalty says:

As far as I know there’s no blackout dates for your free breakfast amenity. Weather they offer two tiers (continental and full etc) might mean you only get continental though.

      Enjoy your stay 👍🏽

      • Harry T says:

Thanks, that’s reassuring. I’ve heard mixed reports about whether they charge you extra for the cooked breakfast, so I might get lucky.

Currently staying and reckon it’s an absolute steal for 35k points.

        • Lady London says:

You’re at Turnberry, @Harry T? Oh dear, Covid warning coming based on the “Where did @Harry T visit last” thing we’ve been seeing.

Do you think it will affect just Turnberry, or all of Scotland? 🙂

          PS Jealous

        • Anna says:

That does sound like a steal. Is it a special rate due to current circumstances or is it one of those places with oddly low points rates in general (though I though Marriott had seen off the last of those in the most recent points “adjustment”)?

          • TGLoyalty says:

Adjustments are made based upon how popular they are for reward nights rather than just price. Ayr is slightly less popular than some places 🙂

          • Harry T says:

            @Anna it’s always around 35k a night

          • Anna says:

Interesting. I’m probably going to cancel my GCM Westin stay next Easter as the Kimpton is a better deal if we are allowed to travel by then, so will have an extra 270k points to play with.

        • Grimz says:

It is a steal for 35k points, stayed last year and it’s brilliant.

  • MarkH says:

Thanks guys. Might wait a day to start putting big items through then after upgrading

  • Peter says:

Not so much points-related but still about travel and loyalty: with the quarantine and the fact that I can WFH anywhere in the world, I decided to stay in France with the family until quarantine is lifted. Called the car insurance provider (car is in France with me) and was told that the 90-day rule is waived and that I will be covered abroad until December or whenever France is a safe destination again.
If anyone is in the same situation it pays off to do the same!

    • Genghis says:

The French tax authorities could take an interest from an income tax and social security perspective and depending on what you’re doing, assuming you’re employed, from a corporate tax perspective too.

      • Spk says:

+1. People underestimate income tax liability and any labour laws applicable while working from other countries. My employer has strictly banned working from other countries.

        • TGLoyalty says:

For a prolonged period of time or at all?

          • Andrew says:

+1 it’s totally banned at my employer as it presents considerable tax implications and employer liability. WFH in another country means you’re working in another country.

      • Peter says:

Fair point. I’ve checked with the French authorities re taxation and it seems that since I hold a French passport and normal residency is abroad, due to covid there’s like a moratorium on those fiscal and social security constraints

  • Fm says:

Any word on whether Creation are going to consider reopening applications for the premium IHG card?

  • Leo says:

Do I need to both book and stay by the expiry date of an extended IHG Credit card night? Is there wiggle room?

    • Jimbob says:

Just book, but don’t get the voucher back if you cancel after the voucher would have expired

  • pauldb says:

HSBC offering £125 for Premier account switch again. Sweetens the WE credit card / avios equation.

  • Pid says:

What are the thought son BA extending their Book with Confidence deadline from 30 Sep? Have avios flights I booked in Feb for Oct which are still going. Ideally I would like to cancel without the fee or take a voucher to extend the 241.

    • Andrew says:

You can’t cancel without a fee, even under booking with confidence – only if they cancel the flight. You can get a voucher or change the date of the booking under booking with confidence.

      • Pid says:

Happy to take the voucher as it would extend the 241 and save the cancellation fees.
