The HfP chat thread – Saturday 19th September

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/09/19/the-hfp-chat-thread-saturday-19th-september/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

With lockdown 2.0 nearly upon us, the brief return to flying was nice.

Believe it when you see it

Boris won’t lock the whole country down again. He wouldn’t dare risk the political backlash of:
      A) acknowledging that he has failed to govern properly again/U turn number 12
      B) large swathes of his party finally having enough of his omnishambles.

Why is this article for yesterday not available on the mobile site? I’ve noticed it a few times this week.

    • Genghis says:

They get moved. Click the link above.

      Actually, it’s an IT issue.

When we pin an article to the top of the home page (and the new BA F seat will be pinned today) it confuses the software when it decides what posts (ie 10-18) to show on page 2. The Friday chat thread should be the first article on Page 2, but the software thinks it was already shown on Page 1 – except it isn’t.

This is separate to the fact that we don’t keep more than 2 chat threads openly showing on the home page at once. The one from the previous day may disappear during the afternoon or evening. You can see it via the link in the article at the end.

Had forgotten No1 Lounge at Gatwick closed at 5pm, so headed to Club Aspire instead (rather than a meagre 35 mins in No1).

Will be back in a couple of weeks, so hope to try No1 then, but Club Aspires food offering appears to have improved on reports in recent week.

Order hot food at the bar, brought over to your table on a plate (not a cardboard box!) and, at least in the case of the “Malabar Curry” was distinctly edible and non-sick looking.

Admittedly a very low bar, but a drastic improvement on some of the photos I’ve seen in recent weeks!

    • Lady London says:

thanks for letting us know @Dominic. Good chance I’m going to be in the LGW Aspire next week.

I wish the lovely staff in the No.1 well though.

In case anyone’s never visited both the Aspire in LGW North and the No.1 there, a key difference (and @Novice will like this) is that the toilets in No.1 are considerably higher quality.

Whereas the Aspire lounge toilets (with it being the former BA LGW lounge) are of distinctly lower quality. ‘hospital style’.

Having said that, the communal hand basins in Aspire are normal size whereas the No.1 handbasins, with each one in its own cabin with loo, are distinctly smaller basins so slight hand gymnastics and care required not to touch the sides.

I am trying to book for reward flights between Dalaman and London on Turkish Airlines as there is no availability on BA.On Turkish Airlines i can see reward flight at 15k miles +40 GBP tax for 1 person. The same reward seats does not show up on Singapore krisflier or United websites.I do not have any miles on Star alliance but can move enough points from Amex Platinum and HSBC elite card to book award seats for 3 passengers .Any suggestions please?

    • Spk says:

Singapore airlines website doesn’t show most awards. Have to call them. Check Aeroplan and Avianca. Haven’t seen Turkish availability on United much. Call the program to confirm availability before transferring any points.

    • Lady London says:

Why not LCC on that route?

  • Donna says:

Qantas flight to nowhere would be worth covering as an article.

  • Steve R says:

@Kumar For RFS only BA do direct flights to Dalaman. When are you hoping to go

  • GERRY says:

Any idea if there is any lounges in Corfu airport?

    • Simon says:

      None!

    • Connor says:

No, there’s a few shops and restaurants and thats it to be honest.

    • Isherwood says:

We used this airport in August to fly back to London and were advised to go through security and then find and join the queue for passport control without delay. This was good advice. Once through passport control there is a choice of new food options, a kiosk, toilets and plenty of seating at the gates. So no reason to hang around after security. Focus on getting through all the queues asap.
