Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Saturday 19th September

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/09/19/the-hfp-chat-thread-saturday-19th-september/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

I’ve seen the hotels.com price match policy mentioned here before, but not the ebookers one (I wasn’t even aware they had one until last week). A hotel I booked in February for this October has reduced their rate from £440 to £135 ish, on my non-refundable booking. My claim was approved in 24 hours and I’m getting a £300-ish refund to my card. Very easy!

  • CTR says:

I know there was a lot of discussion about the Uber voucher from Facebook at the start of the week – £5 off two rides. Mine actually worked last night which I was very surprised by! Great result.

  • Lee says:

Rob, I think you can’t downgrade online anymore. But I would say 20 mins call to save £100 still worth.

  • MarkH says:

I applied and was accepted for the Green card on Friday with a view to upgrading immediately to Plat as I have quite a few home refurb expenses to go through.

I am keen to get onto the Plat asap and start putting the expenses towards the £4k spend target.

Is it still the case that once I have activated the Green card and upgraded, that it acts as a Platinum card until my actual platinum card arrives?

    • Optimus Prime says:

Yes. As soon as you see your online account upgraded to Platinum, your purchases with your Green card will count towards the spend target.

    • Vit says:

Agreed with Optimus Prime — but something weird happened to mine. I used the Plat to make a payment toward a new boiler right on the date online changed from Green to Plat. Somehow, it did not count toward the £4k — it just did not tract the payment. Basically, I did not get the MR point. Need to be added manually; however, the £4k tracker was never updated. I would suggest if you can wait, maybe after upgrade 24-48 hrs before making any big spending.

      • The Urbanite says:

This also happened to me and I was quizzed on how I came to find out about the upgrade offer as I wasn’t targetted. They said the bonus points offer was loaded but inactive. I just told the truth and sent a screenshot and they manually credited the bonus.

    • Harry T says:

When the card in your Apple Pay and online account turns from green to plat, then it’s party time. In fact, amex forgot to send me a platinum card when I upgraded, so I spent on the green card whilst they sent out a replacement. The fun part is that the green card still works as the same card as the metal plat card.

    • MarkH says:

Thanks guys. Might wait a day to start putting big items through

      • Polly says:

Worth a call into Brighton to confirm that it’s now plat spend, at least it’s then a recorded call. Def if big spends imminent.

  • Tom123 says:

If my TP collection ends 25th Jan, and my trip is 23 – 26th Jan for example, assume I’ll get TP only for the inbound and not outbound portion of the trip?

    • ChrisC says:

If this is BA then your TP colelction year ends on the 8th of the month and that is immovable

If you are talking about the grace period then that is a strict 14 days and you have to call up for that to be applied.

TPs are credited to your collection year based on the date of your departure even if they are credited a couple of days later. They are credited on an individual flight not trip basis.

  • jason says:

Hi if i book a miles ticket through virgin is it still £35 to cancel even if its on Airfance
    thanks

    • Lady London says:

      It will be.
Unless Virgin has some kind of waiver of fees for changes in the current environment, which they might well have.
Virgin owns your booking not AF

  • Sam says:

Buy 1,000 Amex Membership Rewards points for £6 with Boris Bikes – even if you’re not in London

Did the app method work in the end? The article wasn’t updated despite saying it would be….

  • callum says:

For anyone interested in the Lloyds vouchers, I just called Avios and was told: they won’t extend them unless your flight is cancelled (though someone else said they got their voucher extended – maybe different agents are more generous?) and you can’t get a FTV on an Avios booking – normal cancellation policies apply.

    • Lady London says:

I would HUACA on that one @Callum.
I could juuuust a bout believe the comment about Lloyds (though still not sure)
but the second comment is b*ll*x

      • Lady London says:

Erm….. hang on a minute, unless you are talking about booking with avios.com rather than BA? I hope they’re not being so mean as not to issue some sort of FTV, if so….!!!!! Still HUACA, maybe during the week and, say, 10am-2pm? (not Monday) to get potentially more experienced core staff?

        • callum says:

          Yes I’m talking about Avios.com.

I’ll try again next week but she seemed pretty sure of herself.
