The HfP chat thread – Sunday 30th August

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/08/30/the-hfp-chat-thread-sunday-30th-august/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Morning. Anyone had any trouble cancelling free BA Amex and then immediately being referred for new BAPP? Trying to trigger another companion ticket ASAP! Thanks.

  • The Lord says:

Flights booked to Male for Feb using Avios and 241. BA currently scheduled for 3 flights a week which seems ambitious. What options do I have if the flight is cancelled? Can I insist on being rerouted on another airline even though it’s a redemption booking?

  • Chris Heyes says:

Morning Question mainly for Rhys (or anyone else who knows lol)
We have booked seats on 787-10 to Denver (Aug 21)
Our seats are 5A, 5E, 6A (3 of us) Club Suites
Question 5A window 5E Isle will it be possible to see and speak to each other as 5E is angled away from 5A ? ? ?
Need to know whilst seats are still changeable
If not i will probably be better off at a window seat (all 3 of us behind each other

    • B P says:

No. As you noted, the seats are angled away from each other. Also, the seat shell (where the door is) extends so far forward on the aisle side that you can’t even see the person sitting across the aisle, even with the door open.

  • Wally1976 says:

Currently getting my wife to refer me from her Amex Platinum for 4 or 5 cards for the referral bonuses. Done the first one. How long would you leave between each application?

    • Harry T says:

Depends on your risk tolerance. I’d personally leave a month or two between them, maybe more. Perhaps refer some other people too, to make it less obvious. Other family members, perhaps?

    • Crafty says:

Probably not a great idea to do this at all.

      • Lady London says:

Pretty sure @BJ has said referrals between partners are fine but self-referral is sure to get you into trouble anytime soon

  • Wally1976 says:

Just a quick data point. I think it’s been mentioned on here that if you add supplementary gold cards to an Amex Platinum account (in addition to a supplementary Platinum card), you can get 5k points each time (even though the points are only supposed to be given for the first supplementary card).

My wife did this, adding a gold card (in her own name) and didn’t receive any points.

    • TGLoyalty says:

I’ve never received more than 1x 5k for the first supp added online

    • Harry T says:

I think this was noted for the Platinum Business card.

      • Jonathan says:

I referred my wife and got none on the business platinum card.

        • Jonathan says:

I say referred, I mean a supplementary on my business platinum and received no bonus points.

      • meta says:

I received 25k points. You can get it for up to 5 cards, but it depends on how IT is set up on your account. I also spaced them out, leaving 3-4 months between each application. I also got an extra Avios for adding 2nd and 3rd supplementary on BAPP leaving 1 year between each application. This was purely by accident as I cancelled a supp then added a new one a year later.

  • Jimmy says:

So Virgin related question: Managed to get my wife a VS card, however it comes with a pathetically small limit. Whilst their is now a limit on miles earned per month, am I right in assuming that the voucher is still obtained regardless of limits? EG if I spend 10k in month one will I earn the voucher ok?

    • Rob says:

      Correct

      • Jimmy says:

Thanks Rob – any views on whether a 10k spend in month one may lead to any difficulties with Virgin?

        • Harry T says:

What’s your credit limit? I suppose it might look a bit odd if your credit limit is £500 but I doubt they would care. When I got my first VS card, I recycled the limit at least two or three times in the first month because they gave me a pathetic £1500 limit – no one cared and I got the points (this was before they stopped awarding points for recycling your limit).

          • Harry T says:

I should add that essentially all my spend was legitimate when I recycled the limit. No MS. I did some genuine Revolut top ups for spending abroad but it was mostly normal spend.

          • Doug M says:

            Genuine revolut top ups 🙂

          • TGLoyalty says:

Revolut actually let you top up with a CC so it’s genuine.

          • Harry T says:

As in, I was using the Revolut balance to buy things abroad, not just for evil 😂

      • Rahaney says:

Is the monthly limit from when you got the card or per calendar month (1st->end)?
        Ta

  • Jane says:

Hi all, had a recent stay at a Crowne Plaza on the 3 for 2 promotion and it has posted as non qualifying despite the reservation showing an estimated points total of around 6000 points. should it have been a qualifying rate ? it was booked direct but did have an extra £20 per night taken off as no club lounge available despite booking executive room.

  • A270 says:

I have reached my Amex Platinum target and achieved the bonus. Can I downgrade to Gold? Will it be free for a year? I want to hold an Amex to continue earning Avios. I don’t want any fee paying cards. I already have 2 x 2for1 vouchers but just need to earn Avios over the next 6 months. What would be the best strategy. I’m not eligible for any new card bonuses. Would a better strategy be to refer my partner to Gold or free BA Amex?

    • Harry T says:

Yes, refer your partner from Platinum to get 12k points and then spend on their card, unless you want them to aim for a 24 month break from Amex so they can get bonuses again.

Amex does let some people downgrade their platinum to the free Gold card for a year. Sadly they would only let me downgrade to Green. I learned the hard way that it’s best to ask to speak to Brighton.

    • Doug M says:

Yes refer partner for Gold credit card. Once they have it, add you as a supp for further 3000MR. You can close Plat assuming you’ve cleared MR to Avios, if not look at the free card Rob mentions, I think ARCC, to keep your MR live.

      • A270 says:

Thanks Doug and Harry. My partner cancelled his Platinum 4 months ago. Can he be referred for Gold so soon? I know he won’t get a sign up bonus.

        • Doug M says:

Yes. No time rule, in current circumstances organisations seeing credit risk differently. I cancelled gold and got another just over 3 months later.

    • ankomonkey says:

I downgraded Plat a few months ago, and they only offered the Gold charge card, not the credit card. Just in case it makes a difference. I assume I can upgrade the Gold charge card to the Platinum charge card at some point, which can’t be done from Gold credit, so I’m happier to have charge 🙂
