The new HFP chat thread – Saturday 15th August

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/08/15/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-saturday-15th-august/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HFP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Intercontinental Ambassador – is it true that the 10% rebate on redemption points perk is being scrapped soon?
Also, its been stated over on FT that if you use 40k ihg points to purchase AMB even in Y2 you dont get the 10% points rebate, it has to be AMB paid by cash – is that correct also?

    • Jonathan says:

Don’t know about it being scrapped but yes, you need to pay cash to get the points rebate.

      • Secret Squirrel says:

        Cheers Jonathen,
Are there any other benefits you do not get if you use points instead of cash to pay for AMB?

    • ChrisC says:

I’ve seen one unsourced comment on the IHG board about the rebate being scrapped which isn’t helpful to man nor beast.

  • Spursdebs says:

    Passport renewal.
Did application online on 4/8 posted old passport back by special delivery on 6/8 had text yesterday 14/8 new passport posted out by special delivery should be here today/Monday.
Under two weeks, can’t fault that service.

    • Carol says:

That’s great service. On that very subject, yesterday I applied online for a refund with Singapore Airlines and 18 hours later have received an email saying they have processed it. A refreshing change to experience such efficiency for a refund!

    • Andrew says:

Just shows how few people are bothering to renew their passport at the moment given they’re unlikely to travel for some time.

      • Doug M says:

I’d never wait, you never know when you made need that passport and very short notice.

      • ChrisC says:

I know a few people who renewed at the end of last year when it was unclear if we were leaving the EU with or without a deal which if it was without it would have meant needing 6 months clear validty if going to Europe (and any extension to validity from renewing a previous passport early would be excluded from calculating those 6 months

BTW from 1st Jan 2021 we’ll need 6 months validity anyway.

    • Doc says:

Glad to hear the Passport office is improving. I applied for renewal of mine in June. Took almost 7 weeks to get my new passport and only after sending them a message by email!!!

      • Secret Squirrel says:

Did you use the electronic route via the P.O? I was advised by my local branch it’s only taking 10-14 days at present.

  • Ant says:

Morning, back in January I called to use a Lloyds voucher & the lady checked my husband’s acc and told me he had one as well that expires on Nov 2020. He called BA yesterday to use it on 01912463933 but they couldn’t see it & said there wasn’t one.
I am sure we have not used it.
Is there any other number I can call to check.

    • meta says:

You should have received emails that you earned a voucher. They also specify voucher numbers.

    • pauldb says:

You could also try webchat once you have account number from an old email. https://chat.avios.com/Live/webchatLoginD.php

    • Anna says:

I’ve never had an email about a Lloyd’s voucher, only a letter. My last was last October but makes no mention of the expiry date on the voucher! I’m hoping it’s still valid (and can be seen on the system) when I try & redeem it in a couple of weeks.

    • RC says:

Got through within a few minutes calling 03444933349 yesterday afternoon. They look up your details using name and address to search for your voucher. Hope this helps

    • Peggers says:

      Hi @Ant.

I have two vouchers to use before the end of November 2020.
I have phoned Avios on 0344 493 3349 in the past.

    • Nigel says:

I thought with the Lloyds Voucher you had to call up Avios only and not BA?

  • Zander says:

Update on booking with Lloyds upgrade voucher.
Booked in April for flights departing in September using 2 Lloyds upgrade vouchers. One of flights was cancelled 3 weeks ago but I had no notification from BA or Avios team until yesterday when I received email from avios team.
If I want refund I can action it by replying to email. If I want to rebook, I need to call. Email went on to say if vouchers used, they would be extended to end of October. So slightly less than the 3 months that has been advised lately.

  • The Original Nick says:

I have a Eurostar booking for next Saturday to Lille coming back on the Sunday. The Sunday train is cancelled and I don’t want to travel now anyway. Eurostar aren’t giving me an option of a refund or a voucher for either leg. Can anyone help out here?

  • The Original Nick says:

When I click on cancel booking it just shows Cancel journey
Sorry, your tickets can’t be cancelled and are non-refundable.

If you’d like to travel at a different time, you could change your journey for a fee.

If you decide not to travel, no need to let us know.

But hold on, eurostar cancelled my ticket not me.

    • Pieter says:

Go to Help Centre, search for ‘Refund’ which throws up a question like ‘Eurostar has cancelled my train’, click that. The page explains how to rebook or get a voucher, ignore all that. At the bottom of the page there is a ‘claim refund’ link which leads to a super simple form where you fill in some details and send it off. Voila.

I had my refund back in my account in about three weeks. There is little acknowledgement but it will be processed.

      Good luck.

  • The Original Nick says:

    Sorry, Pieter.

  • The Original Nick says:

    All done. Thanks again Pieter.

    • Pieter says:

Cool no worries. It’s as hidden as they can legally get away with 😅
