The new HFP chat thread – Sunday 9th August

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/08/09/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-sunday-9th-august/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HFP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Anyone been getting very high estimates of what points you will earn for IHG stays on the app?

Curently estimating my proposed stay at around 20 base per $ for a two night stay rising to about 60 base per $ for a week. Plus 50% platinum bonus on top.

I’m guessing this is an IHG IT glitch? Or am I missing something?

    Thanks

    • Harry T says:

This has happened to me before and sadly I did not get the overestimated points. Try and see what the numbers look like on the desktop website.

  • Brian says:

Example re the above. Total stay cost 1212 USD.

Estimated points 124335 (split 67% base 33% platinum bonus). So actually about 70 base per $.

    • Andrew says:

I’ve had this in the past. Has worked the other way too, estimating a very low number of points. The correct amount always ends up on the account following the stay.

  • Spk says:

Is breakfast at Hilton free for Gold members even if the booking was through an OTA?

    • Andrew says:

      No

    • Anna says:

It depends on the hotel. I’ve booked via BA holidays before (HGI in Rome) and we got free breakfast for 3 of us for the whole stay (no points though).

      • Roger* says:

I’m pretty sure ‘cooked to order breakfast’ is a feature of Hilton Garden Inns, no matter how booked.

        • TGLoyalty says:

          Not for HGI

          It is for HI Express

        • Brian W says:

@Roger only if breakfast is included in the rate you choose or as Gold or Diamond you select breakfast as your MyWay benefit, otherwise you’re not getting any.

    • Rob says:

      No

  • Spk says:

UK seems to have a regent hotel in Wotton house. Is a stay there eligible for the latest IHG ambassador offer?

    • TGLoyalty says:

If you’re using filters To show which hotel is in which brand then this is a glitch as it’s an independent it shows with IC Kimpton or any other brand selected.

Checking the regent site you can confirm it’s not one.

      • Spk says:

Thanks, makes sense. Got a bit excited after filtering for Regent hotels in the search.

  • Patrycja says:

Quick question on AMEX Gold. I booked flights to Australia for New Year with Qatar back in January. My card year is about to end and I would rather not pay the fee so thinking of closing it. Would AMEX still assist if I close the card but need to claim on section 75 later in a year?

    • Chrisasaurus says:

Theres no s75 on a charge card either way I’m afraid

      • Louise K says:

I think AMEX Golds issued in the past 2 years were credit rather than charge cards.

Rob wrote an article about it.

    • Andrew says:

You can downgrade to the free Membership Rewards card by calling them – you keep the same account, so any assistance would continue.

      • Nick_C says:

Didn’t know about the downgrade option but if your partner has an Amex card you would lose the opportunity for them to refer you for the PRGC.

      • Patrycja says:

        Good ti-, thank you

    • Jon says:

S75 still valid on closed accounts. But do check if you have the credit card or the charge card as you only have S75 on the former, and Amex will not entertain any consequential loss claims on charge cards despite their statement that they volUntarily cover it for charge cards.

  • Hannah says:

I am flying LHR – Nice at the end of August with two friends, as a BA Gold card holder can I bring both of them into the Lounge and through the First Wing as per normal summer relaxation of the rules?

    Thank you in advance.

    • Rob says:

      No Summer relaxation AFAIK

    • Doug M says:

Wasn’t that for GGL rather than gold?

      • TGLoyalty says:

Gold got to bring more into the business lounge rather than first.

Think GGL get to do that into the first lounge anyway at the attendants discretion?

  • Peter says:

I have a query about cancelling an Avios 2-4-1 CW booking to Shanghai in November which we no longer wish to use. We have just received an e-mail from BA to say that the outward flight is re-timed by 5 mins but the return flight is entirely cancelled – with no alternative flight proposed. Does this entitle us to cancel the entire booking free of charge, or will we be expected to pay £35 each to cancel the outward flight, as it has merely been retimed by 5 mins ?

    • Anna says:

As long as it’s all on one booking, cancelling one leg means you are entitled to a refund for the whole trip.

      • Peter Williams says:

        Thanks Anna. Enjoy GCM !

        • Anna says:

Thanks, we do very much and gutted we didn’t go this year! Got 2 trips booked now for 2021 so here’s hoping we can travel again by then …

  • Barry says:

Hi if you downgrade your BAPP Card to the free BA Amex Card do you have to go through a credit check and will it also appear on your credit report when changing cards

    • DJ says:

I have done change of products many times with Amex, and I have not seen any trace of credit check on Equifax and TransUnion reports.

    • Chris Heyes says:

Barry@ We both upgraded to Amex Platinum earlier in year (phoned up) no prob almost instant
Got a 15k points retention made 6 referrals downgraded me to BA Premium Partner to Gold Amex
(Again phone) no problem (in fact Brighton said i don’t blame you) will refer Partner to BA Premium after additional 10k for £15,000 is paid out just after June next year, then cancel my card
I Think Brighton is brill, I Tell them what & why I’m doing never a prob
All of above no affect on my credit score (i pay balance off every month though, both cards)
Note wont let you pay more I’ve tried lol wanted to be in credit
