The new HFP chat thread – Monday 27th July

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/07/27/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-monday-27th-july/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HFP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Does anyone know if the EasyJet bag drop at LGW is still open the night before? We have an early flight this week and ideally I will drop my bag off the evening before. TIA.

  • Crafty says:

Anybody who’s topping up NS&I from a Creation card, I would urge you to check your statements religiously. On inspection I’ve found that not one but two transactions in the last month have been double charged to the underlying card and not corrected, although both have disappeared from Curve. This leaves me temporarily £3,800 out of pocket (as well as the credit limit breach issue that I previously flagged on here). If it’s happened to me, it will have happened to others.

    • BJ says:

Thanks, anybody seeing the same with Hilton?

    • mark2 says:

What do you mean by ‘disappeared from Curve’?

      • BJ says:

Transaction details I guess. I just went on the app and emailed receipts for everything during the past month to be on the safe side.

        • Crafty says:

In both cases, only one transaction on that date for that amount (previously two); but credit card statement still has two.

    • YC says:

Similar issue-ish. I have my IHG linked to curve and 2 transactions appear on IHG but just 1 on curve. Curve completely useless with understanding and rectifying the issue. Does anyone know if there is a telephone number to call Curve? Emails back/forth highly ineffective

    • Genghis says:

Curve were charging double for some payments on 12 July. Affected my wife but an email to Curve once noticed and refund came next day.

    • Leigh says:

Thanks for the reminder. Just checked and found that a declined transaction has been charged to my Creation card! Will contact Curve regarding this.

    • Mr. AC says:

I’ve seen something similar with a different card – transaction via Curve “doubled up”. One is an actual charge, the other is a hold. It’s been almost month and it’s still hanging there pending, but I’m not too concerned about it for now. Haven’t had it happen with Creation though.

  • Michael C says:

Interesting legal aspect of the new Spain rule for those “caught” there: went out covered by insurance for an approved country, then that insurance is effectively rendered void overnight and mid-trip by the don’t-travel-to list!

    • The other Kevin says:

But still covered by EHIC as we are still in the EU?

      • AJA says:

Being pedantic we are still covered by the EHIC scheme as we are in the transition period having actually left the EU on 31 Jan.

    • Heathrow Flyer says:

Not all providers become void overnight. HSBC/Aviva continue to cover medical even when FCO say don’t go.

However as the FCO are advising those already in Spain not to cut their holidays short I doubt those in-country would have their claim rejected, as they travelled when the advice was different.

      • BP says:

Interesting on HSBC/Aviva. I’ve been holding off on booking fligts to UAE for November due to travel cover/FCO guidance. I’ll give HSBC a call to confirm before booking my flights.

    • Lady London says:

I think if you had already travelled out you would be covered.

      • Wally1976 says:

Yes that’s what I heard on radio this morning (so must be right!)

    • TGLoyalty says:

Never had an insurance policy that didn’t cover you if you travelled and then FCO advice changed. But as always check your policy wording before booking/travelling.

  • Adam says:

Emirates providing free COVID insurance for costs of quarantine / healthcare if you are diagnosed with it when travelling. I’m personally keeping an eye out for when FCO lifts restrictions to UAE (hence spotting it) – I would want my usual travel insurance valid too, but is this a game changer?

    • marcw says:

It’s not a game changer. It’s just a good marketing strategy. Remember when Emirates announced they would test all passengers, and made a very nice press release – which was replicated by all main newspapers? It’s just (again) an excellent marketing strategy.

  • Vinz says:

Does anybody know if I get avios/TP on an economy OB redemption flight upgraded to biz with cash at the airport?
I wasn’t awarded any and I wanted to check whether I should claim missing avios?

    • BJ says:

Unfortunately not. Do you mind sharing with us where you flew, whether you asked or were offered the upgrade, how much they asked for, and whether you haggled it down?

      • Vinz says:

London-Rome, I was offered the upgrade for £69 and accepted.
Should’ve I haggled it down??? How stupid! But I thought £69 was very good considering it’s never less than £79.

    • Mr. AC says:

You’re not supposed to get any if upgrading from a redemption. However, staff at the airport is often not aware of it. Ask them about it, and if they say yes, note their name, accept the upgrade and then (once the Avios / TPs fail to materialize) try to claim the missing Avios / TPs via the BA website. YMMV, but I’ve had success getting a chunky Avios compensation this way. I was Gold at the time, which might have helped.
Works only once, however (since you’re now obviously aware of the policy).

      • Vinz says:

        How interesting.

What about haggling…? Do you know anything about that?

  • DJ says:

    Hi all,

I need to book a 2-night stay in Central London next weekend. Any recommendations? 😅 I don’t think I have stayed in London hotels before.

Something under £200 a night. Status wise, I have the statuses from Amex Plat, and IHG’s Ambassadors 🙂

    Thanks,

    Winston

    • Rob says:

You’re laughing – £99 will get you a very decent place at the moment. I’d go with Hilton as you’re Gold as it gets you breakfast. Bankside (best option, arguably) and Tower Bridge are both modern hotels and should be around £100.

  • Mr(s) Entitled says:

If BA cancel your flight, and you do nothing, do they refund you or ultimately end up issuing a voucher?

    • Rob says:

It seems that nothing happens until you contact them.

    • ChrisC says:

Why would you delay phoning BA?

Delaying just means they get to keep your money for longer!

      • Mr(s) Entitled says:

I only paid £1 + avios and the call centre isn’t the easiest place to get through to at present. There is only so much time (next to zero) that I want to spend chasing.

  • Colin says:

I noticed that high street footfall grew week on week over the weekend….
