The new HFP chat thread – Saturday 18th July

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/07/18/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-saturday-18th-july/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HFP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

I do have reward flights booked to Abu Dhabi with BA for late December.Should Abu dhabi restrict tourists unlike Dubai .How likely is BA would cancel AUH and move my seats to Dubai. Recently my flight for LGW is cancelled and moved to LHR .It wasnt a much inconvenience to me.

    Thanks

  • Nigel Moorhouse says:

IMO Kumari, given that Dubai and Abu Dhabi are very close, cannot see one open and the other not. Think the real ( low) risk is that they do not put the Abu Dhabi flight back on yet. Again, not a problem as the taxi from Dubai to AD only takes just over an hour

    • Roberto says:

@Nigel – Although Dubia is already open since the the 7th of July and Abu Dhabi is not..

However I do agree that the word United in the UAE should mean that they will align at some time. I am waiting for flights to Abu Dhabi to open up as hoping for a week at the Ritz Carlton in October…

      • Andrew says:

Although we are supposed to be United too and yet the four nations are all operating differently.

  • The Savage Squirrel says:

Simple question or so I thought but I just can’t find an answer anywhere…

Hotels.com rewards. Booking multiple rooms on the same night: does each room credit as a reward night? Is there any limit on the number of rooms that count?

    • Rob says:

Yes (I’ve done it) and I don’t think there is a cap.

    • TGLoyalty says:

I’ve book 4 before all earned nights if that helps.

      • Genghis says:

Yep. I’ve done 8 rooms – team conference.
Also did 4 rooms for 2 weeks.
“Don’t worry boss, I’ll sort out the hotel”. 🙂

        • TGLoyalty says:

Ah to have a flexible booking policy 🙂

        • The Savage Squirrel says:

Thanks – this is what I had in mind :D.

        • meta says:

I also once did 30 rooms for 2 nights for an event that I organised for a client. Used 6 free nights on a pool villa in Thailand! Sadly that was a one-off event, but it’s those kind of wins every once in a while that make this hobby so exciting.

        • PJJ says:

          Very kind of you Genghis

          • Genghis says:

Best thing about it is that people think you’re going out of your way and doing them a favour! They only think I get the credit card spend points…

  • Lottie says:

If the fco advice is not to travel and the flight still goes can you claim on Amex travel insurance? I have a trip to India booked in October half term , Lufthansa first class when it was on offer. They are asking me if I want a voucher but looking at similar flights next year I’d be adding thousands to it for the same flight. If I don’t take the voucher and it doesn’t get cancelled I assume I lose the money if I can’t get in / dont want to travel. Dilemma as India cases are still rising not falling.

    • Colin says:

At the moment, all international flights in and out of India are suspended so I’d guess unless the situation improves then that’ll continue to be the case, rather than some flights still running.

(I’m not making a prediction about whether cases will drop etc as I’m not a scientist)

    • Princess says:

I had a flight to Portugal in mid June. The advice was still only essential travel, so we didn’t go and I claimed it with the Plat Amex insurance and they refund the full cost less the £50 excess. No question asked

  • YC says:

Amex gold referral down to 6k? Is this new?

Also can you get the referral bonus if friend has recently closed card (few months)?

    • Rob says:

      Dropped a year ago.

You can get the bonus if the person you refer does not qualify, yes.

      • Nick_C says:

        Well I didn’t know that!

The Amex website says “You will receive your bonus if your friend or family member uses your link to apply for a Card … and is approved.”

        • Andrew says:

Yes they have to be approved for the card for you to get the bonus, but even if they don’t qualify for the sign up bonus, you get the referral bonus regardless.

      • Wally1976 says:

It was raised back to 9k for a period but this ended 30th June I think

  • Paul says:

I’m currently Curve Blue and approaching the £50k annual limit. Is this a rolling 365 day limit or calendar year and anyone had success with a blue card getting this limit increased?

    • Rob says:

      Rolling.

They will increase it, but not if you’re only using it for HMRC etc. I can’t get mine beyond £50k but my spend is 100% HMRC.

    • Pat the Postie says:

yes you can get it increased, seems if they issue a replacement or you upgrade then your limits are reset

    • James says:

Do a lot of transactions that appear normal spend mixed in with PayPal transfer, credit card bills etc and they will increase. I went from £50 to £100k and now on 300k since the Wirecard transfer. Though am on Metal now. My Curve Blue is only £10k annual limit so looking to boost that over the next few months.

    • Crafty says:

Yes. Just ask and see. If they say no don’t make a fuss. I went from £50k to £100k last week and don’t use it for any day to day spending. On processing the increase they simply said that to get any further future increases, I would have to do such.

  • Princess says:

ReportIng from flying yesterday from Stansted.
The airport was quiete, most of the stores were open, people were well behaved.
Even the Ryanair boarding was good and people respected social distancing.
Flight was quite busy but not full.
We went to the Escape lounge: the lounge was almost empty, when we left at 12:30 I think there were only 5-6 tables. No buffet available only table service.
Food option quite limited and taste definitely underwhelming. (2 type of overcooked pasta, 2 type of sandwiches, a cheese plate, fruit and muffin)

    • memesweeper says:

Thanks for the report Princess. The Escape lounge food was always terribly disappointing so no surprise that’s it not improved. Enjoy your journey.
