Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The new HFP chat thread – Wednesday 1st July

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/07/01/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-wednesday-1st-july/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working.  Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

What happened to the new look HFP, were we not told we could expect it within days/weeks over a month ago? Any excitement is welcome these days.

    • Chrisasaurus says:

Well then you should be happy, that’s a month of excitement and counting!

      • BJ says:

Lol, I cannot say the anticipation has been exciting, the thought just crossed my mind when opening the page this morning. Discussion of it should be a nice distraction from the usual cancelled flights and travel disruption, as important as those are.

        • Andrew says:

On a similar vein, I wonder what will happen about BA’s new uniform, originally promised last year for the centenary, then delayed to this year, now who knows….

    • Doug M says:

I keep hoping the layout change will bring an improved commenting system.

    • Rhys says:

      Still happening! Soon!

      • Rob says:

Whilst it will (sort of) look the same, we are changing a lot behind the scenes to give use more flexibility to use graphics in places where we currently use huge slabs of text, eg the credit cards page. This is causing a lot of development work. What we’ve done is commission a design from scratch rather than buying an off-the-shelf package, which allows us to have the features we want, but it is a slow process.

For example …. the ‘featured images’ you see on the home page and mobile site will be bigger. This is a problem because a lot of the current ones were originally cut to size and can’t be expanded. This means, even if we just do 3-years worth, we need to amend well over 3,000 articles.

  • Anuj says:

Is the bapp get 2 bonus avios points per £1 at Tesco etc offer supposed to be showing on every card ?

  • Roger says:

Thinking of cancelling Amex Platinum which is due for renewal soon.
Any reason I should hold out my cancellation?
Any likely new lucrative offer expected when phoning for cancellation?

    • Steve says:

I got 15000MR a couple of weeks ago which persuaded me to stay.

      • Genghis says:

It’s not really a retention offer is it? Cancel once you’ve spent the points if you really want to leave.

      • Martin says:

I got offered nothing other than paying £48 monthly instead of the whole £575 just 2 days ago. Have mulled it over and am going to call back today!
I did ask about any other incentives and was told that was the only offer to come up.

        • Lady London says:

make sure you phone in the middle of UK business hours and check you are talking to Brighton ( or ask them to transfer you there) before you ask again.

    • Ming the Merciless says:

Double MR points on all purchases, that only get the original MR points deducted on refund? 100k and counting.

      • Andrew says:

        You’ve refunded £100k of purchases?

        • Secret Squirrel says:

Could be on BAPP so 1.5 + additional bonus points at present.

      • Crafty says:

Which retailer are you trusting to hold your money though, even for a day, right now?

  • Chrisasaurus says:

Interesting note – first curve charge to hit my account since the weekend doesnt have the CRV* prefix.. one off or pattern I don’t know but interesting nonetheless

    • Andrew says:

As long as cash doesn’t start being treated as cash by the underlying card.

    • Genghis says:

Whereas mine half do. I’m sure there was some chat on the curve boards about it initially not showing and then appearing.

      • reney says:

Transaction with one of my cards are no longer going through, it shows as decline with Curve but it doesn’t even look like my card provider has been alerted. Is the problem with Curve? I think it has something to do with the pop-up thing that sometimes you are asked to confirm a transaction which currently is not working in the app (someone mentioned this yesterday). Anyone else with similar issues?

        • Doog1000 says:

yep having same issues – asks to verify in app and then no prompts to verify when you open the app

    • The Streets says:

It’s a bit like when you use PayPal with AMEX. The PayPal prefix shows after it moves out of pending

    • Secret Squirrel says:

When you mean charge, do you mean a fee or general purchase?

    • Lady London says:

according to a report yesterday this might be an indicator that some other markers are not coming through as expected.. could be worth a test or two.

    • rams1981 says:

Since their changes I am finding Curve doesn’t top up certain places it did before. I have fronted switched off so that could be why.

      • aDifferentSimon says:

I just did a top up that went from a 6211 to an 8999.
        Which was interesting.

  • Anna says:

I posted last night but still might be of interest for others with Marriott cancellations – I got the expected email from The Langley yesterday to say the hotel is closed until November and offering to move my 2 night points booking. I asked to move it to New Year weekend and they agreed and at that point mentioned that I would need to use extra points. I emailed back saying that I was very disappointed that the original rate would not be honoured as I had moved the booking previously with no rate change etc. I’ve not had a further response, but the new booking is now showing in my account with the original number of points paid. I’m unsure whether this is a tacit agreement to not charge me any more points or not!

    • Michael C says:

Score, if that works out, Anna! (although I do appreciate your b-day celebrations are being pushed further & further into the future!)

      • Anna says:

Lol, my backup booking also got cancelled yesterday! I’m going to wait until the week before the trip was going to be and just see what’s open. It’ll be a novel experience booking something at the last minute, not done that for a very long time!

    • AndyW says:

When was the booking if you don’t mind me asking? I have a stay early September and nothing yet, presumably they are contacting most recent bookings first though.

    • Stanley says:

I think you are in the clear. Same happened to me. no extra points

  • Gruntfuttock says:

2nd BA Boeing 787-10 on its way from Charleston for all the spotters

    • Gruntfuttock says:

BA9151 from Charleston to London https://fr24.com/BAW9151/24d286d7

      • Jessiefan says:

Interesting just how much air traffic there is when you look at this!

        • Lady London says:

actually normally (non covid) when Ive looked at flightradar I’ve said just the same as you @jessiefan. But in former days over Europe you couldn’t see the landmass for the tailfins! plus it looks so eerie now – just looked and nothing else over the Atlantic.

best similar experience was when I worked for a n oil company and discovered their big screen with all their tankers moving around the world just like flightradar…. trivial but for some reason watching it had a calming aquarium-like effect on me. Now I’m wondering if I should set flightradar up as my screensaver 🙂

      • Lady London says:

Hmmmm didn’t Qatar put into their contracts no equipment from the Charleston plant? should we be worried

        • Andrew says:

Yes probably best to avoid flying the BA aircraft from that plant – apparently the quality isn’t good

  • Y says:

Any idea how to find out if curve -> IHG transaction has gone through as cash or purchase? Can’t seem to find MCC code on the transaction, etc.

    • The Urbanite says:

You can either contact Curve, ring Creation or wait until the transaction clears then check if a cash advance fee posts with it.

      • memesweeper says:

Please don’t ring Creation. Nothing good ever comes of that. Absolutely only call them as a last resort would be my advice.

  • happeemonkee says:

    Virgin £40 refund

We hope you’re keeping safe and well. As a Virgin Atlantic Reward+ Credit Card customer, we know that these last few months, you won’t have been able to take advantage of your Flying Club rewards in the same way.
So we’re refunding £40 of your annual card fee. There’s nothing you need to do – just look out for your refund landing in your credit card account in the next few days.

    • luckyjim says:

Just got that too. Jolly decent of them.

I think I made the right choice cancelling HSBC Premium WE and keeping the VA as my main Mastercard after IHG.

    • Jon says:

Came here to post the same – just had the email. Can’t quite decide whether to think “Nice surprise” or “What, only £40?!” 😉

Had completely forgotten my £160 renewal was due this month (didn’t get any notice, which has slightly annoyed me) and have barely used the card at all this year, and don’t expect to until at least next year. £100 might have been more like it. Ah well, better than nothing 😉
