The new HFP chat thread – Wednesday 1st July

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions. It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind. At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article. This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article. Has there been any news of an extension to the DragonPass lounge vouchers bought via RED by Dufry? Mine expire in January 2021.

I had a quick look at LHR. Most lounges are closed, of course, though Regus is available. I’d hope for better value.

If they’re not extended, I guess it’s time for a refund.

Just making sure I’ve understood something correctly.
I have IHG status, but no Hilton status.
I’m looking at a Hilton in Luxor, Egypt next year.
I understand I can get a status match from Hilton, for a short period of time within which I must meet a stay criteria if I want to maintain that status.
As I almost never stay at Hilton properties, would it be a good idea to book that hotel on a room only basis soon (prices seem reasonable at present with lack of tourism) and shortly before I travel there, I get Hilton to match my IHG status and therefore when I check in, I can try and see if they’ll do a free room upgrade and at the very least I should get breakfast for the five days? Thereafter, it matters not about meeting the criteria since I’m not likely to stay at another Hilton anytime soon.

Or does it not work like this?

  IME you will need IHG Plat or to be sure Spire to get HH Diamond. Only works once the status match so use it very well if you can & remember you need proof of atleast one stay at an ihg hotel.
  Best to have the HH status when you book cash rate as I earned status once after booking & was a fair bit of chasing the resorts management to get them to acknowledge my Diamond status.

      Nobody now gets Diamond, they get Gold and need to complete challenge to retain Gold or get elevated to Diamond. Thus Gold will get Aston free breakfast, and in Egypt I would imagine an upgrade of some sort too. Hower, not everybody applying for the challenge gets it, it is not guaranteed. Aston should apply at least one month before trip so that if he is not accepted then he can fall back in the amex platinum route to Gold by taking out the card for a month.

      My last Diamond match was from IHG Plat but that was a year ago.
      I think your right, there was talk of only Gold nowadays, I stand corrected but would still recommend do it ASAP as if you make the booking in a low status, many hotels only see from time of booking.
      I had to keep e-mailing my hotel for them to recognise my new Diamond status.

      As BJ quoted, no longer do Hilton offer Diamond as a match.
      HH Gold matches to IHG Spire, check out status matcher.
