The new HFP chat thread – Friday 26th June

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/06/26/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-friday-26th-june/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working.  Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

Curve, what a damn pain. I’m about to settle a hotel bill for checkout tomorrow to avoid the weekend fee!

Will have to stick it on the BC Visa and claim back the FX from Curve after.

  • Waddle says:

Curve was in the process of migrating away from Wirecard this week anyway. The process was meant to be done by the 28th. I expect it to be back up soon. They are just scrambling to accelerate the migration.

  • RTS says:

Lol damn Curve… just as they gave me a £300k per annum limit too! Hopefully they get up and running again!

Anyone who has used HSBC World Elite CC with Curve – are you able to confirm whether you get fee charges from HSBC for Amex Payments?

    • Anon says:

I haven’t used for Amex (and I thought you weren’t able to recycle money like this anymore?)

But there’s no charges for things like ATM withdrawals and they’re treated as purchases.

    • Spk says:

      No charges yet.

    • Secret Squirrel says:

      Got 500k increase yesterday!

  • Andrew says:

I wonder if they are still working on the link with Amex they promised 18 months ago after it was launched for a week and then quickly switched off.

  • MKB says:

I wrongly assumed that, with the UK and French government easing restrictions on travel, that future movement from British Airways would be to potentially increase flights, not cut them back.; that the schedule they were selling already reflected the downturned market. Apparently not.

So I was surprised to get a cancellation notice today for flights booked yesterday from Heathrow to Lyon in late August. Ttwo of three daily flights have been cancelled, leaving just the early afternoon one. I couldn’t find any other airline offering direct flights from the UK to Lyon on the same dates, so it didn’t seem odd that BA had judged that three flights a day was sensible.

Can I get a refund of the £10 extra paid for Economy Plus? The only benefit to me was the same-day free change, which is no longer possible.

Of note is that the flight retained was the one on most days selling for the lowest value. Passengers accepting a rebooking on to this get no original fare difference back.

BA pulled a similar trick last summer when I flew to Italy. They had a 6am-ish Saturday flight selling for peanuts and a mid-morning flight that was very expensive. Once the later flight was nearly fully booked, they cancelled it, and moved everyone on to the early flight. That had the effect of making the early flight even more expensive, so that cancelling and rebooking was not an option.

    • MKB says:

Self-correction: Easyjet appear to have a late-night direct flight from Gatwick. Could have sworn that wasn’t there on Skycanner when I checked earlier in the week.

    • meta says:

I think Lyon flights will be cancelled this year. It is not a major destination and there is probably no business traffic. Eurostar cancelled all Lyon services for 2020 and 2021!

      • MKB says:

Yes, it was me that reported the Eurostar cancellations on here. Hence my rebooking on BA. I don’t think I’m destined to be making this trip.

    • Jonathan says:

Not sure I follow the logic of BA deliberately choosing to cancel the more expensive flight as that increases the amount they have to refund. It’s also more expensive due to increased demand so would have had more passengers in normal times.

BA are cancelling flights to optimise scheduling & remove night stops for crew so a lot of early morning & evening flights to/from London will be culled.

If you take the move you won’t get the £10 back as this gets a package of extra benefits (seat selection, hold luggage etc.) & it’s not for you to apportion value to the individual elements.

      • Paul says:

Except the don’t. In the height of summer and being offered another service earlier in the day few will cancel. Don’t be under any illusion that BA are not Machiavellian when they want to be

  • Chris L says:

Similar to the previous poster, I had some BA flights in mid-August (LHR – Ljubljana, Slovenia) cancelled today. I would suggest anyone with BA bookings in August to check the status. We were hoping we’d be able to go, but it seems that demand for the route has diminished. This is slightly surprising as Slovenia declared an end to their epidemic on 15 May. They’ve ‘only’ had 109 deaths.

    • meta says:

If you still want to go, BA also flies to Zagreb (now 3 times a week) and it is less than 2h drive or about 3h on a train. But it might be too much for a long weekend.

      • mutley says:

Don’t drive out of Croatia and into Slovenia on a weekend, the wait at the border is horrendous. My better half is Croatian and we have done this trip several times, if you must drive then very early morning is preferable, otherwise take the train

  • Barry says:

What’s the best way to get in touch with VS to request a refund for cancelled flights?

I’ve called and been diverted to their text message/Whatsapp service but am going around in circles with their automated messaging system. I get to the end of the automated message roundabout and send my refund request and flight details etc…. wait for a couple of days and someone gets back to me saying they can keep my ticket open if I want or if not reply to confirm that I still want a refund. I reply to say that I want a refund and I get sent around their automated roundabout again. I say that I want a refund am not interested in any other option. Wait 2 days and then get the same message they sent me 2 days ago saying there are other options available and to reply to confirm refund!

    ARGH!!!

  • Rob says:

Yes, you can call and ask for one.

    • MKB says:

How do you call? Every time I’ve tried, I spend two minutes navigating menus and recorded messages only to be told no-one is available and get cut-off.

      What number should I use?
      Is there a trick?

      • Rhys says:

It changes every week, but try not pressing anything. Alternatively, give it a week or so and try again – BA just cancelled a bunch of flights so a lot of people are currently calling.

      • Chris L says:

I managed to get through this morning by not pressing anything.
