The new HFP chat thread – Friday 26th June

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/06/26/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-friday-26th-june/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working.  Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

Update on the etihd voucher, got a lady from india who called me back and booked the voucher for me, then said the payments team will call you back in an hour, and that was 10 hours ago. lovely.

She also said that etihad did not anticipate the demand for these vouchers.

  • Michael C says:

(Following on from “Anna’s Spanish passport” conundrum from yesterday!)

Anna, I use my mother’s maiden name for my “second” surname: this fits in with the details on the back of your ID card, which will show your father (Pepe García) and mother (Jenny Jones) to make you Anna García Jones (as it were!!!!).

My husband has a “triple” surname which is just squidged together on BA tickets, along the style of “CONÇEIÇAODESOUZA”.

    • Nick_C says:

My husband has a long one, and it’s bigger than your husband’s 😉. 24 char including spaces, four parts. Again, concatenated on documentation so the crew never know how to address him.

Credit card applications are also fun, as most forms only allow 20 char max for surnames. Barclaycard print 5 initials and the first 4 characters of his last name on the card. Amex have embossed all 24 characters on his card thanks to some manual intervention (well 21 characters as the spaces are not embossed).

    • Anna says:

I asked the solicitor I’m using (can’t face Spanish bureaucracy!) and they said it has to be father’s first surname plus mother’s first surname (though of course my mother only had one surname at once, being English). She couldn’t say though whether that’s my mother’s maiden name, or her married name which she had taken by the time I was born – apparently the consulate will make the decision when I go for my interview with them!

  • ROY says:

Is there any “smart” way to pay HMRC VAT using Amex?

  • Dave says:

Carrying on the HRMC theme, is Curve now the only way for your self assessment payments.

    • Rob says:

No. Use the Lufthansa Miles & More card directly. Only works for personal taxes though, not VAT etc – they come for you if you try it.

Curve charges unless you have Curve Metal, remember.

      • Dave says:

Thanks – it my personal HMRC self assessment bill, I will look into MM card. Its hard to makes he sums work for Curve metal!

        • Rob says:

You will struggle to pay heavy sums with it in one go. What I am doing is splitting my bill into 52 and paying a chunk once per week. It is less likely to cause trouble with Diners.

  • Michael C says:

Looking at Eurostar Aug. tickets – does anyone know if the GBP 18 insurance policy they offer covers “cancelling because I just don’t want to go any more”?!

  • Michael C says:

IOM-GCI safe corridor flight scheduled to commence 22 July, twice weekly with Aurigny.

  • Stanley says:

I have an avios booking LCY-PMI for a weekend in August. Looks like it isnt going to be flying. Do I wait to be moved to LHR flight or worth calling now and “demanding” it to be ahead of the pack?

    • Rob says:

You should call BUT a lot of cancellations were sent out this week and the lines seem to be swamped for a few days. If you have BA status it will be easier to ring.

      • Stanley says:

Thanks. Will try at weekend. Was hoping LCY flights would be running by August.

        • Anna says:

I get the feeling they want to divert as much travel as they can to LHR/LGW. I had MAN-AGP cancelled for the end of this month as was offered MAN-LHR LGW-AGP as an alternative! Needless to say, we’re not doing that – on top of the mask-wearing and social distancing on arrival I can’t think of a much more miserable holiday experience!

          • Stanley says:

I hear you. But we are willing ( crazy) to put up with a few hours of mask wearing to get to a villa in the sun for a week. I figure I may only have half a dozen summer holidays left with my kids before they find better things to do without us, so don’t want to miss any…. the word “staycation” gives me the chills.

          • Margaret says:

I read yesterday that the weekend Cityflyer flights have all been cancelled, but the PMI-EDI ones are running from 1st August still. The STN ones to PMI were cancelled 2 days ago (I had some!), so it seems that they are still keeping some?

  • Nikkei says:

Anyone having issues with referral points from AMEX? No points have posted for any of my referrals

Platinum card – application was approved after being initially declined few days ago
Gold credit card – no points but card has already arrived

    • Rhys says:

      Are they self-referrals?

    • Craig says:

Yep, quite a few comments over the last few days.

    • Lee says:

Some of us are due for over 3 weeks now. Again no and never self referral

    • Eli gold says:

I got points posted instantly for referrals including self referral, but the last (none self) referral 3 weeks ago still hasn’t shown up. Then they tell you about the 8-10 weeks rubbish on the chat.

I get the feeling that AMEX is following the others down the gutters with the CS going downhill, benefits tanking, and IT mess with people’s offers not showing up, not being allowed to add new cards into existing online accounts and lots more
      A real shame!
