The new HFP chat thread – Sunday 21st June

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/06/21/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-sunday-21st-june/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working.  Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

Hi, I only have the Shop Small offer on one of my AMEX’s – is the offer meant to show up on all AMEX’s? It’s not showing on my Gold Credit Card which I got as a supplementary to my Gold Charge Card a few years backs and was able to keep when I cancelled the charge card.

    • Rob says:

Yes, it is meant to, although a handful of people are experiencing problems. Call centre seems to be able to add it.

  • Lee says:

There were some discussions about AMEX referral bonus delay a few days ago. Has anyone got any update? I’ve waited 10 days and no points yet.

    • Craig says:

9 days for me so far with nothing.

    • Wally1976 says:

I’d have to check the exact date but I think it was 4th June my wife referred me from her gold personal credit card for the business gold and still no referral points. She contacted them on line chat and they said allow 6-8 weeks. I’ve also added 2 supplementary cards to the business gold and not received any points.

  • Anna says:

Any recommendations for good places to use the Shop Small offer in Northumberland/County Durham. We’re hopefully going to be there for 10 days later this summer.

    • Charlieface says:

Pay £10 onto your council tax or utilities at every Paypoint/Payzone newsagents you see

      • Baji Nahid says:

        only once a day no?

        • Charlieface says:

Paypoint is £200 per day per shop I think. Not sure about Payzone but for some reason very few of them take Amex.

  • John says:

I’ve noticed over the last 2 weeks or so that Avios availability to virtually all USA destinations in Business is down to the minimum guaranteed 2 per flight. Usually there’s a lot more “discretionary” availability. Anyone know any rationale behind this? Is it likely just a temporary hiatus, or signs of a more permanent reduction?

    • Rob says:

Probably lack of certainty over the flight going. There was huge amounts recently for Easter 21 which we jumped on.

  • YH says:

    Data point on QR refunds.

Booked a J flight during the January sales for September to fly from ARN to HND.
7th May – I received a change of flight notice, 3/4 flight numbers had changed, first flight time departing 5 hours earlier and arriving at NRT instead of HND.
12th May – I requested a full cash refund through the online refund form on the QR website.
21st June (today) – I just received an email confirming the full cash refund has been processed and could take up to 28 days to hit my account.

I wasn’t in any rush for the money so let it play out without chasing. Almost 6 weeks for the refund confirmation and potentially up to 10 weeks since original refund request for my money back.

    • Genghis says:

I’ll bet the money doesn’t appear within 28 days.

    • LST says:

      HI.

My flight to SIN on 12th May was cancelled on 24th April, the email at the time stated the refund would be processed in 8 weeks or so. Further email on 27th May stating refund was being processed, and may be another 8 weeks until it would reach my card, the money was refunded on my card a week later.

    BA Status Extension:

” I gained a new status in my current membership year, so I already have it for next year regardless. Do I get an additional extension?

    Yes.”

Some on FT are claiming that anyone who has upgraded in their current year aren’t getting an extension… although I appreciate BA wrote that wording on HfP. I upgraded to Silver this year and received the extension email.

    • ChrisC says:

A lot of people don’t understand the way BA earning and status years operate.

They also expected everything to be updated immediately.

Mind BA could have written their FAQs and email better but you can say that about a lot of things. BA could have given a couple of examples and said when they would do the updates.

So my status year ends 31st December so they could have said something like ‘Your account currently shows your silver ending in 31st December 2020 and we will add your year extension on 1st January 2021’

      • Rob says:

When you get a NEW BA status, your membership card immediately shows the date 2 years in advance when you drop. If you got NEW status today, with a year end of 8 Sep, your BAEC card would say ‘Exp 31 October 2021’. THIS is why you get a 2022 extension due to this policy.

Now … if you RENEWED your EXISTING status today, with an identical year end of 8 Sep, your BAEC card would still say ‘Exp 31 October 2020’. Whilst you have earned renewal, it is not applied to your account until your year end. This is why your extension is only going to be until 2021, because on 1st July your card still shows 31 October 2020.

I rang Miles & More 2 weeks ago and got straight through -very weird!

  • Ian says:

    Data point on Easyjet refunds.

Applied for a refund online for two bookings on 05/05 and received email confirmation of refund today.

    • Spursdebs says:

I applied for easy jet refund 5 weeks ago, had email confirmation but still waiting on the actual money to be paid. They say hopefully in 30 days but might take 90 in the email.
